I am taking 500mg of Cephalexin for Mastitis. One doc said 4x a day for a week. Pharmacist said 2x a day for 2 weeks. Does it matter? Due to nausea I would rather take 2x a day for a longer period. Thanks! ## I would suggest double checking with your doctor to be sure which is appropriate. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Usually, it is taken 4 times a day for a week. How are you feeling? My wife was prescribed Cephalexin for a stye and I was wondering since it is an antibiotic, whether it is okay for her to be out in the sun? I could not find anything on the included drug label insert specifically mentioning sun exposure risks, but I thought I would check seeing as how other antibiotics are known to increase sensitivity to sunlight. Any feedback appreciated. I am having terrible headaches and was given cephalexin 500mg 4x a day + aspirin 81 mg 1 pill a day, for an infection in my hand from an IV injection site after surgery. Anatomically speaking, the upper respiratory tract does include the sinuses, so it would be safe to assume that this would be the correct dose for this type of infection. Are cephalexin green and red capsules the same? ## The same as what, exactly? There is a green and red Cephalexin capsule that has the marking SQUIBB 181 on it and it contains 250mgs of Cephalexin. So, if you are asking about the dosage, then no, because it only contains half the dosage of the 500mg capsules. Im allergic to penicillen and was given cephalexin, can I take them or will it kill me like penicillin will?? ## Hi Franny, Based on my research, Penicillin and Cephalexin are classified as two different types of antibiotics (cephalosporin antibiotics and penicillin antibiotics). However, more information I'm finding states that there is some clinical and laboratory evidence of partial cross-allergenicity of the penicillins and the cephalosporins. Apparently there have been patients who reported severe reactions to both medications. So I don't think any exceptions should be made for Cephalexin in this regard either (at least to play it safe). However the exact dosage and duration of treatment is best determined by a licensed vet who can evaluate the dog in person. Upon doing so, the vet can also decide if Cephalexin is appropriate over other potential antibiotics/treatment options (that may be safer in so far as possible side effects). Cephalexin itself is a very powerful drug (even for humans), so I just think it's wise to play it safe and seek additional feedback from a vet before following through with treatment on your own accord.
