I have an antibiodic for tmp and I have a bad tooth which causes the roof of my mouth and gum to swell with infection it is very painfull and I do not have insurance. I was wondering if this antibiodic was something that would treat this infection... ## Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim can in-fact be used to treat a tooth infection, but it is not usually the first choice for dental infections since many of them respond better to other alternatives, such as Penicillin and Amoxicillin. Learn More: Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethopriml Details I would also consider speaking with a dentist about the underlying cause of this infection, just to make sure it's not something that will be reoccurring. I have copd and have developed bronchitis over the last week or so. I am allergic to penicillin. My doctor believes the bronchitis is bacterial and has prescribed a medication that the prescription insert says "May cause serious lung problems. Tell your doctor if you develop a cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain" all of which I have with copd and bronchitis. He also prescribed 5 days of prednisone and a pro air inhaler. What would be the best antibiotic given this information. (The medication is sulfameth/trimethoprim 800160mg TB.) ## There are risks associated with all medications and that warning is usually included with most antibiotics, due to the possibility of hypersensitivity reactions, thus, I really don't know what I could suggest that might be safer for you. ...

is sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim related to penicillin Im allergic to Penicillin I have a cold and I wanted to make sure I am safe taking this drug ## Hello, Renay! How are you? I'm sorry that your sick. No, this is a sulfa based antibiotic in a different drug family. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, joint aches, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. However, antibiotics will not do anything to treat a cold. Colds are caused by viruses and antibiotics, such as this, are only effective at treating bacterial infections. Additionally, taking it when it isn't appropriate creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I am taking Apollo sulfate I'm DE tablets...

500 my amoxicilin. Can I take this for my spider bite that's now infected and for infection in my gums. I'm also allergic to sulfa I will not go to Dr or hospital I'm allergic to penicillin I WA 12 when i.broke out in hives and was dizzy. But that's it. Can I take amoxicilin Amoxicilin 500 mg. Desperate ## Hi Andrea, According to The University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine (UMKC), people who are allergic to penicillin may also have a cross-reaction to amoxicillin because they are both in the same family of antibiotics (known as 'beta-lactam' antibiotics). So in general, I would say it's not recommended. Perhaps it'd be best to ask your doctor about trying some other type of antibiotic altogether, such as: Tetracyclines Macrolides Fluor...

I have a really bad toothache that I think is abscessed. Will Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) help treat the infection? ## Can Bactrim be used for a Tooth Infection? While Bactrim is effective against a range of bacterial infections, it is not typically the first-line antibiotic for treating tooth infections, which are often caused by anaerobic bacteria found in the oral cavity. These infections usually respond better to antibiotics that are specifically effective against the types of bacteria found in dental abscesses, such as penicillin, amoxicillin, or clindamycin, which are more traditionally prescribed by dentists. However, in cases where a patient cannot tolerate these first-line antibiotics or if the infection is caused by a bacteria that is known to be susceptible to...

Does this medication make you light sensative, will I have a higher chance of sunburn while taking this? ## Photosensitivity is common in antibiotic classes like quinolones (Ciprofloxacin), tetracyclines (Doxycycline), and sulfa drugs (Sulfamethoxazole). These drugs you would have to avoid sun exposure. I personally have not read about photosensitivity with Pota-Vi-Kin (Penicillin) use. Most antibiotics have a label on them saying that "this could cause sun sensitivity". I would be on the look out for a label like that for future references; but as far as Penicillin goes, you should be fine. Hope this helps!

I currently have a tooth abcess that my endodontist is trying to treat. The problem he is having is that I am allergic to the antibiotics that are best at treating this. I am allergic to penicillin, erythromycin, cephalosporins. We tried cipro but that did not do much after 2 weeks. Is there another antibiotic I can try? ## Are you able to take the sulfa based ones, such as Bactrim? It can cause some nasty side effects and there is the risk of being allergic for about 3% of people, which is why I don't usually recommend it to anyone, but it may be your best option. Learn more Bactrim details here. It's worth asking him about it to see if it may work, anyway.

Can I take ip 272 antibiotics for infected skin boil? And up to how many antibiotics can I take in a day? ## I am 26 years old. I have ampicillin tryhydrate capsule 250 mg. How many milligrams of ampicillin can I use for the boil? ## @Daniel, IP 272 is identified as Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim DS (800 mg / 160 mg). And the answer your question is yes, this antibiotic in particular is often prescribed for tissue infections such as boils. However the protocol for proper dosing and administration should probably be left for your prescribing doctor to decide, based on the severity of the infection and other important factors. @Wale, From what I've researched, Penicillin derived antibiotics such as Ampicillin trihydrate are widely prescribed for treating boils. However, like Daniel...
