Had tooth pulled yesterday. Tooth had root canal, crown 20 yrs ago. Tooth got infected, had to be taken out. The doctor didn't say I needed an antibiotic to kill the infection. Would Amoxocillin do anything? It is very sore and throbbing. I don't want to take pain medication. I would think the infection is still in the gum. ## Hello, Susan! How are you? Sorry about the tooth problem. However, an antibiotic is not always necessary. In most cases of dental infection, the bacteria becomes trapped in the tooth, or under the tooth, so once it's extracted it will drain and usually clear up on its own. Thus, you shouldn't take an antibiotic, unless your doctor or dentist has specifically said you need to take one. Taking one when it isn't needed creates the risk of developi...

I do not take antibiotics because of severe reactions such as swollen eyelids and other issues.and also allergic to Flagyl. and possibly Levaquin. Also I believe antibiotics are over used and so far I have done without them for things everyone else takes them for such as Flu,colds and many other things. I use herbal products without most problems but now have a couple of painful tooth issues and perhaps some infections. I have no medical records to verify this due to many years of not having insurance or finances. I have been prescribed antibiotics for tooth infections before having dental work and pain went away. I'm allergic to penicillin can i take cefdinir? if I take cefdinir for this and I don't have an infection will it hurt me? ## It is a different antibiotic, but there is always a risk of discovering that you're also allergic to it. People allergic to one medication tend to find out there are others they are allergic to and if you don't have an infection, taking it could cause you to develop antibiotic resistant bacteria. Thus, you should only take it if your doctor or dentist confirms that you do have an infection. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can hel...

I used Bactrim; it takes more time to work than clindamycin. It has taken four days for the swelling to go down, but it has gone down and is almost normal now. I have double strength pills and will take them 2x a day for ten days. I also used the clove oil on my gums and that is working very well. They are going from red to pink again. You can buy this a CVS or Walgreens in the toothpaste isle. I also have been taking four advil 2x day for the swelling. ## Hello, KLF! How are you feeling? I'm glad the antibiotic worked for you. How fast it helps really depends on the nature of the bacteria and the severity of the infection. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything e...

I have a abcess tooth which one is best cipro septra or keflex? ## Hi Brenda, From what I could gather, Ciprofloxacin is not commonly prescribed for dental infections. So it's probably not the best choice as a first line treatment option.. Septra and Keflex on the other hand, are more commonly prescribed by dentists for tooth and other mouth related infections, due to their broader spectrum. You may want to talk with your doctor about either one of those last two options to see what works best. Sometimes the right decision has to come from trial and error, depending on how your body reacts to each medication. Have you taken either of these medications in the past?

I was one amoxicillin 500 4 time s a day before they were pulled but then still hurt Thanks ## Hello, Nanc! How are you? It is normal for the sockets to remain sore for awhile, after extractions. Whether or not you ask for more pain medications is up to you. How severe is it? The FDA classifies Tylenol 3 as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

I have the following antibiotics that I can take to help me until I can get to my dental appointment, but my dental appointment isn't until February 10th. I always keep my appointments because it's hard to get in with them, they stay booked for the time frame I can get there. I have an infection in the front of my gum area, front tooth stays sore a lot. It comes and goes all the time. I can taste it too. Which one would help me best until my appointment? Macrobid, Levofloxacin, or Bactrim? ## Hi Kym, I see you posted this on January 30th...and it's now March 2nd (after your appointment date). Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank you, I will go tomorrow.

Can smz/tmp tab treat mouth sores ## Hi Linda, This question has an interesting response because Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim can actually cause sores, ulcers, or white spots in the mouth or on the lips, as a rare but possible side effect. If these mouth sores that you're describing are related to an infection, I can confirm that this medication is also used for treatment of both tooth and gum infections; although it does not specify if mouth sores are included in this category of treatment. If I were in your shoes I would consider trying clove essential oil for any dental or mouth related infections or sores. There are also a good number of natural home remedies which you can find online, if these are identified as canker sores. Please post back with any additional information s...

my two back molar teeth are hurting. No dental coverage have almost thirty pills of amox tr-k clv 825-125 mg will this help my tootache. Also took ibprofen still hurts. ## Hello, Bebe! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in pain. This is an antibiotic, so it will only help if there is an infection present and it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. And it will not negate the need to see a dentist, either. While it can remove an infection, it will not correct the underlying cause of an infection, so it will just keep recurring until the issue is corrected by your dentist. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have a painful toothache. The dentist office is closed on Sunday. I have 1 ciprofloxacin 500 mg and cephalexin 500 mg. I don't know if they are okay to take for my toothache. ## Those are both antibiotics, used to treat various types of infections, so they may help, but it will not be enough to completely get rid of the infection and they will not treat pain. It is very important that you see a dentist to get to the root of the problem and, if needed, get enough antibiotics to clear up an infection. Are there any other questions?

I took Cipro 00 for 2 days now with out any change on the pain level. does that mean that it won't work? thank you ## Hello, Rara! How are you? The general rule with antibiotics is if they are working, there should be no worsening after the first 24 hours and you should see improvement after taking them for a full 3 days. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. However, the issue is that your pain may not be due to an infection and, if that is the case, then the antibiotic will not help. Have you consulted your de...

I have a really bad toothache that I think is abscessed. Will Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) help treat the infection? ## Can Bactrim be used for a Tooth Infection? While Bactrim is effective against a range of bacterial infections, it is not typically the first-line antibiotic for treating tooth infections, which are often caused by anaerobic bacteria found in the oral cavity. These infections usually respond better to antibiotics that are specifically effective against the types of bacteria found in dental abscesses, such as penicillin, amoxicillin, or clindamycin, which are more traditionally prescribed by dentists. However, in cases where a patient cannot tolerate these first-line antibiotics or if the infection is caused by a bacteria that is known to be susceptible to...

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and stomach pain. It would be best to see a dentist, so they can prescribe the appropriate medications and correct the problems that have caused these issues. If you allow them to continue, things are just going to keep getting worse. I'm currently dealing with a tooth infection and unfortunately, I can't get an appointment with my dentist until Tuesday, and today is Friday. My wife has Cefdinir at home. Would that help reduce the swelling in my face? ## Hello, Witchdr! How are you feeling? I'm sorry about the dental infection. According to MedlinePlus, “Cefdinir is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as bronchitis, infections of the skin, ears, sinuses, throat, and tonsils. Cefdinir is in a class of medications called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.” [1] So while it can be used to treat oral infections, it may take several days to start having an effect and it may not reduce swelling immediately. To do that, it has to start eradicating the infecti...
