I was wondering if amoxicillin really goes bad or does it just lose it's strength? ## It is not one of the antibiotics that becomes dangerous, once it's expired, but yes, it does start to lose effectiveness, which creates the risk of it not fully eradicating bacteria and its developing antibiotic resistance. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I bought 100 amoxicillin caps about 3 years ago and stored them in a dark place and I was curious if they would still be good to take. ## does amoxicillin expire ## don't use it. amoxicillin goes bad a year from when you bought it. ## Actually, no, it does not go bad, it just loses efficacy, so it is not as strong or as potent as when you first bought, starting from about 18 months past the manufacture date. You should never self-diagnose or self-treat with antibiotics anyway, there are so many other conditions that will not respond to them, so they have no effect, and you of course run the risk of developing an antibiotic resistant strain of something with overuse, so please see your doctor. ## First of all, why do you just have the drug sitting around? Did you take it and not fini...

My son still has two bottles of amoxicillin liquid that has not been opened or used since the pharmacist made it. How long will it last if kept in the fridge ## Hi, Amanda! How are you? Yes, antibiotic suspensions start to lose their efficacy once expired and taking an antibiotic that is not fully effective can be dangerous, since it creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Such liquids are only good for 7 to 21 days, depending on the type. Learn more Amoxicillin details here. Why didn't your son finish the medication? Unless his doctor instructs otherwise, an antibiotic should always be finished to make sure that the infection is fully eradicated and to help prevent the development of the antibiotic resistant bacteria that I mentioned. ## I used it as directed ...

My son has a horrible cough for days now following an up and down temp. I have a few 500mg of Amoxicillin capsules from my recent dental root canal fun times. Is it alright for me to break the capsule and put a small dosage into his juice/food? He gets bad anxiety at the doctors office I'd like to spare him the upset if it's something I can take care of at home. ## Hello, Ally! How is your son doing? No, that's never a good idea. He may not have an infection, if he does this may not be the appropriate antibiotic to treat it, you could end up giving him too much or too little.. there are just too many risks involved. It would be best to see his doctor for a proper diagnosis and prescription, if necessary. The FDA classifies this medication as being an antibiotic and it's ...

I have been prescribed Amoxicillin Tr K Clv and after four days, I have a bad case of diarrhea, so bad that I can't control loosing my diarrhea, as a result, I will not take the rest of the pills. Should I contact my doctor?? ## Yes, because if you have an infection, it does need to be properly treated. Diarrhea, however, is a normal side effect of most antibiotics and usually sets in after a few days of treatment, once they start working. Have you contacted your doctor, yet?

I see both nyquil and amoxicillin have acetaminophen. I take amoxicillin once daily for hip pain. I have very bad cold and need a Nyquil. Can I take it. Usual dose on package says adult can take 2 nyquil tablets. ## Hello, Barbie! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in pain. However, can you please double check what you're taking? Amoxicillin does not treat pain and does not contain Acetaminophen. It is an antibiotic that is used to treat or prevent bacterial infections. I'm sorry, but I'm unable to answer your question without knowing for sure what medication you are on. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Nyquil as possibly including nausea, dizziness and drowsiness. ## Hello my name is Krissy i have a bad tooth ache I wanted to do can you take amoxicillin 500...

Hi, I was just wondering if liquid Amoxicillin actually goes bad & could possibly harm someone, or does it just lose its potency? For example, liquid Amoxicillin kept in fridge the whole time, not quite a month old...there's no expiration date anywhere on the bottle, & there was extra left over after it was administered correctly for 10 days. Does it "go bad"/spoil like a food would? Thanks! ## Hello, Ricky! How are you? Yes, it can go sour and, while it wouldn't actually be harmful, it could cause nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps, if taken once expired, as reported by the FDA. Most liquids are only good for a few weeks, but the pharmacy should be able to give a more precise date. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Amoxicillin is actually only good for...

I just got pooprescribed amoxicillin today, and took my first 125mg at three pm,can I take another now,it's 10:38 pm, I'm feeling bad? I'm prescribed for two a day? ## Hello, Tom! How are you? I'm sorry that you're ill. No, you should follow the prescribed dosing schedule. It will take several days, usually about 3, before you start to feel improvement from taking this antibiotic. It will not alleviate symptoms immediately. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. My almost 10 month old was on amoxicillin for 6 days and began to develop an allergic reaction - bad diarrhea and a red rash on her cheeks; I stopped giving it to her-her last dose was 2 days ago and she still has the diarrhea and rash-how long before it goes away? My doctor prescribed her a different antibiotic but we have not started it yet, I'm almost afraid to. ## talk to your doctor about it and really talk about, make him explain the new drug to you before you use it. ## Yes, definitely speak to your doctor, he should make sure from now on to prescribe a totally different class of antibiotic to prevent that from happening to your daughter again. If you aren't sure, ask the pharmacist when you go in to get the scrip filled. Tell then she is allergic to it, then if your doc ...

My daughter has amoxicillin that has not been touched can she use it if date is 9/24/15 ## Hello, Susie! How are you? Is it a liquid or tablets? All medications tend to lose efficacy over time, so taking an antibiotic once it's expired can create the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria, since it may not work as well. However, liquids can actually go bad. It really is always better to obtain a new supply from your doctor, if you need an antibiotic. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. ## Amoxicillin is good for one year when first purchased/received from the pharmacy.

I have a bladder infection that makes my urinating urgent and sometimes uncontrollable. I was given a prescription for smz-tmp to treat it. Like an idiot I started the prescription but never finished it because I was also given amoxicillin to treat an infection in my tooth then panicked cause I was taking both of them at once and I was scared of overdoing it. Now months later I'm having some serious lower back pain and I'm considering finishing both prescriptions in hopes to make a full regimen. Will this work or just cause more problems ## Hi Shaylee, I'm sorry to hear about that, bladder infections are no fun! Seeing as both the medications you mentioned are antibiotics, I'm not sure how that would help with your back pain. I imagine it might cause more problems since ...

What is the recommend Amoxicillin dosage for a 6 yr old who is 46 lbs? My son is 6 yrs old and has a bad ear infection in one ear. Doctor gave him 500 mg of Amoxicillin 2 times/day, 2 teaspoon (10mg). He weighs 46 lbs. I just think it seems like a lot for his age. Please let me know if it's ok? Thank you! ## Hi Inna, According to an article I found on the site for Livestrong, kids between the ages of 2 months and 6 years old are usually given 80 to 90 mgs of amoxicillin per kilogram of body weight per day. This is supposed to be divided up into two or three doses and is generally prescribed for about 10 days. Every child may react differently though...so unfortunately I can't say for sure whether this dosing schedule is right for your son. That question seems like it'll be b...

I have been taking Amoxicillin 500 mg for 3 days now. I'm suffering from really bad headaches and sore eyes. Could this be caused by the tablets? Or is this dose (500mg) too high? I'm taking it for having sore ears and a runny nose. ## No, that is the standard dosage, however, the symptoms you've described can be normal side effects of this medication, which should go away after you finish your course of treatment, according to the U.S. FDA. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. However, if they become severe, you should consult your doctor. I have been religiously taking Lo Loestrin Fe for 3 years and I recently got strep throat and was prescribed Amoxicillin. I'm in the middle of my pack and on the second day of taking the antibiotic I started a period which I usually don't get. I had unprotected intercourse on the third day and I'm wondering if I can get pregnant from it or if it's worth taking Plan B? I'm really afraid of the side effects of that though. ## Lo Loestrin Fe (norethindrone acetate + ethinyl estradiol) being a form of birth control, should prevent or at least significantly lower the possibility of pregnancy - regardless of whether you're on an antibiotic. Antibiotics may reduce bad (and good) bacteria within the body, but to my understanding should not interact with birth control or ...

I'd been having headaches for a month they tended to start in my nose and then above my eyebrows before turning into a proper headache so went to the doctors and they thought I had a sinus issue, I've been on them for 7 days finish my course tonight. However I've had two days, one today and one the day before yesterday where I've had bad headaches but the symptoms of sinus infections have gone,is this due to the antibiotics or another issue? Should I go back? I'm also on the pill so could it be that? ## Hello, Gee! How are you doing? Has there been any change? It's actually hard to say, the headaches can be a side effect of taking the antibiotic, as reported by the FDA, they can also be a symptom of a sinus infection, or it could be something entirely unrelated to...

I got a real real bad toothache and got a unopened bottle of amoxicillin liquid kind I have for 4 months and I'm pg well it hurt to take ## This medication does not become dangerous, once expired, but it does lose efficacy with time, so if it is expired, it may not work as well as it did, when new, which creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. It would be best to see your dentist for a fresh antibiotic, if one is required and to have the problem that caused the toothache corrected. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have a gum infection because I have a bad tooth that needs to be pulled. The dentist prescribed me Amoxicillin 875 mg. I'm just wondering how long will it take for my gums to return back to normal. I've been taking the pills for 7 days and I have 3 days left. ## Hello, Shauna! How are you doing? The general rule for antibiotics is that you should start to see improvement after taking them for a full 3 days. If you still have swelling, it may not be the right one to treat the infection you have and you may need to ask about taking something else. When are you having the tooth extracted? It would be best to do it after the infection has improved, otherwise it may not numb properly. ## As rightlly said by Verwon, at seven days you shud ave had an improvement if not complete heali...

The headaches can be a normal side effect of this antibiotic, as reported by the FDA. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. How high was your blood pressure? This medication hasn't been known to cause that, but the pain from the severe headache may cause elevations. Are you on any other medications? Have you consulted your medical practitioner?
