Alzheimer's disease (AD), also known in medical literature as Alzheimer disease, is the most common form of dementia. There is no cure for the disease, which worsens as it progresses, and eventually leads to death. It was first described by German psychiatrist and neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer in 1906 and was named after him.[1] Most often, AD is diagnosed in people over 65years of age,[2] although the less-prevalent early-onset Alzheimer's can occur much earlier. In 2006, there were 26.6 ...

My husband has Alzheimers and became combative at the Memory Care Facility where he lives. They sent him to the hospital which sent him spiraling down to probably late stage ALZ now. They kept him on lots of haldol for about 2 weeks. He couldn't walk anymore, didn't talk, couldn't feed himself and rarely opened his eyes. After trying other meds, they put him on Depakote. He remained there for another 2 weeks weaning off the Haldol and then went back to the facility. He was still in withdrawal and it took another month to get it all out of his system. But as soon as he returned they put him on Depakote only. 1000mg at night, now changed to 250 in the morning and 1000 at night. He is now awake, talking and no longer combative. He just gets agitated when they need to change his...

has anyone tried somazine for alzheimers? my wife who has the problem has not had a prescription for it ## Hello, Lenhoppy! Sorry about your wife's condition. How is she doing? Somazine/Somazina contains the active ingredient Citicoline, which is a psychostimulant and nootropic agent, it's actually available over the counter in many countries and used as an alertness aid. Learn more Somazine details here. Some studies have shown that it helps with mental alertness and improves memory, so you may want to ask her doctor about it. Is there anything else I can help with? ## A rare known fact about kicking starting the brain back into gear sound strange, but ask a professional, tablets that are made for sleeping called zopiclone / zimovane

Hi - has anyone else heard about the research being done on Bexarotene as a viable Alzheimer's treatment? Apparently they have been testing it in mice and it appears to quickly and effectively stop (and even reverse) degeneration in the brain tissue. They basically took mice which were genetically engineered to exhibit Alzheimer's symptoms (yeah, cruel, I know) and observed how their brains would get built up with amyloid beta peptides (which are basically thought to exist in excess as plaque in the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer's and it causes the blocking up of neurons and cell death). And of course the mice would exhibit some of the classic early signs such as forgetfulness. Anyways, Scientific American has described some of the findings: "with just a sing...

I was diagnosed with EOD of the Alzheimers type in 2007, by mid 2010, I was so ill, I asked my Doctor for a shot of Adrenalin: after much procrastination, the Doctor prescribed Cymbalta 30 mg, a drug not directed at A/D, with the proviso that if I felt suicidal, I was to stop immediately......well the rest is history.....34 months later, and I have halted this horrible disease, and apart from feeling like a dog that has had distemper and survived, I am living a normal life once again......as of this current moment, 04-04-2013, ...I still take only 30 mg and feel as confident and as good as I did in 2003..........I do not know what I have found here, but it certainly warrants immediate research by an astute drug company.... ## Hi, Tony! Very glad that it has helped you so much. Cymbalta ...

I take Cymbalta 30 mg for the Adrenalin, to treat and control My A/D which I was diagnosed with in 2007, I began taking it mid 2010, and today, 34 months later I am still alive and quite able to live a normal lifestyle once again ....so I now feel that my confidence in Adrenalin has been vindicated... Tony H. ## Hi Tony H, It's good to hear that Cymbalta has enhanced your quality of life! I know that there are mixed reviews when it comes to this medication and many similar medications, so I'm sure that many people who are just starting out with Cymbalta will be glad to hear about your experience. My mother-in-law has dementia and has been prescribed Brintellix as one of her meds. Can this help with the dementia / alzheimers? Thank you, Pam ## Hi Pam, Sorry to hear about your mother in law. Trintellix (formerly called Brintellix, active ingredient Vortioxetine)[1] is indicated for major depressive disorder, although there have been studies conducted which indicate that it may also treat cognitive dysfunction in those patients too [2]. May I ask what other meds she has been prescribed? I wonder if this is part of her treatment because of its effects as an antidepressant / cognitive treatment? Ref: [1] [2]

I would like to know how to obtain one of these care packages to help my family have a better understanding about the dementia process. ## i am suffering from AZ since two years back . Ineed the package for some relief ## I would like info for me & my family. My mom (91) & Aunt (95) have it, they are sisters. Could be frustrating at times. ## Unfortunately, the only information package I'm finding is for medical professionals training to care for patients with Alzheimers. Howver, the Alzheimer's Association website has a lot of information available for caregivers, and patients suffering from it. So, please check out this resource. Most doctors will also have information available to help you, such as tracts, and online resources. Does anyone else know of any information...

I am a caregiver for a 79 year old female and watching her decline really stresses me out. I wished to god I could help her. I recently heard about h-86 that could possibly help her with alzhelmers. Is there any truth to this? ## Hi George, Sorry to hear about your situation. I just wanted to point out that H-86 (by Health Sciences Institute) is widely thought to be a scam; as are other products by HSI. There are other discussion threads here that describe various experiences with HSI, many disappointed with their misleading marketing tactics... Secondly, H-86 is touted as a cancer cure. I have yet to see anything relating it to alzheimers... Thirdly, H-86 is a fictitious name for "fermented wheat germ extract" - also being branded under the name "Avemar" - which has act...

My physician said that a highly respected researcher has found through a study, where, one group was given Metanx & the other a placebo. The study stated that those lucky enough to received the Metanx, the volume loss of brain was greatly reduced. Are there other studies being done to slow down the progressive nature of Alzheimer's or a possible prevention or treatment for this horrible disease. Thank you so much. ## Hello, BD! How are you? I've not found anything on that study. However yes, there is lots of research being done and many possible breakthroughs, including full memory restoration, if further testing validates the findings, but it will be several years before any of it becomes mainstream. As to the Metanx, since it is just a nutritional supplement as classified ...

My mother was on Lipitor for over 10 years, since 6 years ago she developed Alzheimer's symptoms, she short term and med term memory is gone, kept asking the same question. She has a lot of confusion and is not confident anymore. I saw the news about Lipitor 3 weeks ago, and test it by stopping her Lipitor med. 2 weeks later, she is 85% recovered! She is like a different person now, asking me detail questions about more complex subjects, and actually wanting to learn to use the remote control! I am glad to have her back in my life, she is back from Hell. ## btw she was only taking 10mg of Lipitor. It was taken as precaution only, she exercise regularly and eats very lean. ## Hello, St Leung! How is your mother doing? Due to the side effects that such a medication can cause, I just d...

My dad who has alzheimers takes a oblong white pill with 911JCC on one side and no markings the other. ## I located an oblong white pill with "cor 116" on it and when held upside down closely resembles your description (e.g. 911 Joc). This pill reportedly contains 650mgs of Acetaminophen, which is marketed for use as a minor pain reliever and fever reducer. An image of the pill can be viewed "here". My dad has dementia/Alzheimer's and it's very problematic to get him to take his meds. Does Seroquel and Ativan come in liquid form? ## The Ativan does, but not the Seroquel. What I'd suggest doing is speaking to his doctor about it, to discuss the problem and see what alternative medications can be prescribed that are in liquid form, or perhaps injectable. There are quite a few options available, so they shouldn't have a problem helping you and, if you have to learn to give him a shot, it is pretty simple and the doctor or a nurse can teach you to do so in just a few minutes. My mom who has moderate Alzheimer's is prescribed both 14mg Namenda and 9.5 excel patch. Because of the high price of $351 a month and no noticeable improvement I haven't had her take the namenda for two months. Can we start her back on the same dose of namenda? ## Hello, Brian!
