Does allopurinol contain any sulfa? ## Based on my research, Allopurinol is not listed as a sulfa-containing drug. Is Allopurinol mfg by qualitest gluten free? ## Hi edb, From what I could gather, Allopurinol from Qualitest contains the following inactive ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose and sodium starch glycolate. Unfortunately, "sodium starch glycolate" is heavily regarded as a questionable substance for those with a gluten intolerance; since it is derived from starch. So I personally wouldn't recommend taking it without your doctor's prior consensus. This year when I went through regular check up my BP was 140/100 and sugar levels were 125 FBS and 170 PBS. The LDL was 140mg. Immediately he advised to take telma-H 80mg in empty stomach in the morning. I followed for three days it made lot of acidity and gas problems. I stopped 80 mg and revert back to 40 mg. My BP rose to 160/110. I went to some other cardiologist who suggested to take trazloc trio 40mg.(combination of telmaH and amlopress). For two days the BP didnt come down. I have been using allopurin for about 12 months now as a gout relief treatment. I have noted that I have been getting outbreaks of rashes - brownish red spots, slightly raised which develop into dry, flaky skins patches - concentrated around the lower back, and upper buttock. This has become concerning now as they have now spread to the legs as well as under the arms. My wife says it is the Puricos (allopurin) and thinks I must discontinue. Any comment or view ## Have you consulted your doctor? It is rare, but Allopurinol can cause a rash, in some people and, when it does, they usually do have to discontinue use of it. Since uric acid is considered an antioxidant that lowers the occurrence of free radicals one could assume that uric acid decreasing substances like Allopurinol should increase cancer incidence? Has anyone done any studies? Are there any databases to look for any correlation? If Allopurinol does not give cancer then the only argument against keeping the current level of uric acid in blood is invalidated.

Can taking Allopurinol cause a diabetic to develop kidney problems? ## My father had a quadruple by-pass and kidney failure, should he continue taking allopurinol along with these medications: coumadin, lipitor, lisinopil, metrplolol and pholso? ## Allopurinol has been known to cause kidney failure as a side effect, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, kidney insufficiency, and confusion, according to FDA reports. Ref: Medline Plus Allopurinol However, diabetes and many other medications can also cause kidney problems, so there is really no way to say for sure what has caused kidney issues. What was the doctor's opinion? Carolyn, have those all been prescribed for him by his doctor? He should take what they have prescribed, and not make any changes, without their approval.

I've been on Allopurinol 300mg once a day since early 90's, with no side effects at all. I have not had a kidney stone since I've been on the Medication. Two weeks ago I refilled my prescription and the medication that I usually get is from Ingenus. Much too my surprise I got Accord instead, from my Walgreens Pharmacy and after a few days I noticed that I was getting constipated. Ingenus has discontinued Allopurinol. I know that side effects from Allopurinol never mention constipation and I was wondring if the cause could be the fillers and binding agents. Have anybody run into constipation with Allopurinol? What manufacturer would be a better alternative to Accord for thiis drug. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ## Sorry to hear about your situation. According to NIH,...

After 6 mos on 300 mg allopurinol, headaches still occur, sometimes migraines, acid reflux has gotten worse and worse, never was a problem before. Was put on tecta for that, am allergic to it, only on one week caused hives, itching, dizziness sometimes with spinning vertigo, so no more of that one. I am wondering if anyone with these problems had them lessen when changing to uloric. It is supposed to have fewer side effects. ## There is also a risk of it causing side effects, which the NIH lists as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, GERD, dry mouth, and changes in urination. That is just the nature of adding a chemical to the body to try to correct a problem. Have you started taking it, yet? If so, has there been any change? Are you on any other medications?
