Alcoholism is a broad term for problems with alcohol, and is generally used to mean compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcoholic beverages, usually to the detriment of the drinker's health, personal relationships, and social standing. It is medically considered a disease, specifically an addictive illness, and in psychiatry several other terms are used, specifically "alcohol abuse" and "alcohol dependence," which have slightly different definitions.[1] In 1979 an expert World Health O...

why shouldn't you take nexium with alcohol, when alcohol gives you heartburn ## Nexium treats heart burn symptoms as a result of excessive consumption of alcohol. Nexium prescription will reduce the severity of such symptoms. However prolonged use of this medicine is not advisable. In fact nexium pills show better relief from gastro esophageal reflux diseases (GERD) only. Some users get really ill when combining alcohol and nexium, while this combination doesn't have the same effect on others. Nexium (esomeprazole), however, is metabolized by the liver; so if you have a liver disease from too much alcohol, this would not be a wise choice. Additionally, in some people, alcohol can cause acid reflux to be worse. So while there isn't a drug interaction between Nexium and alcoho...

please let me kow of any interactions with alcohol and keppra ## yes, alcohol is a bad mixture with this medication. I would advise you to really think that through. I ended up in the emergency room 2 months ago because I had a break through seizure due to alcohol. ## Keppra contains the active ingredient Levetiracetam and is an anticonvulsant medication. That said, it is never a good idea to mix alcohol with prescription medications. Not only can it reduce the effectiveness of some, as Sarah discovered, but it can also aggravate the side effects. Some of the most common side effects of this medication include: nausea, hair loss, headache and depression. You can read more about this medication here: Is there anything else I can help you with?

is Re-vital-eyes a prescription drug as they contains Purified benzyl alcohol? ## Benzyl alcohol? No, this would not be safe to use in the eye, it would cause a lot of problems, irritation and possibly permanent damage. Revital Eyes drops, by Ethos contain the active ingredient NAC N-Acetyl-Carnosine, a natural substance used in the eye drops. It is not actually proven to help with anything. I stop taking CHERATUSSIN AC SYRUP 12 hours ago. I was if was okay to drink alcohol now? ## Hi Kira, Although instructions note that you should avoid alcohol while taking Cheratussin AC (due to an increase in CNS depression), I think if you were to wait a full 12 hours you should be fine. The effects of Cheratussin should've worn off by then anyways. I just recommend using caution and being conscious of how it might be affecting you, so you can make the best judgment of how much alcohol you can safely drink. I hope this advice helps!

how long to get out of system? regardless of amount, example: 24 oz @ 8%, last drank on saturday 7pm ## Based on my research, alcohol is generally out of your body within 3 to 5 days after your last drink. However in my opinion, you always have to take into consideration the amount you drank, since your body can only excrete so much at any given moment. Other individual factors that may also influence this are one's weight, metabolism, eating/drinking habits, and how active you are. Additionally, I would recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the day to encourage a quicker process, but allowing 3 to 5 days is a fair estimate for most people, I'd say. Hope this helps!

Looking for some real life experiences to hear about. I'm new to nuvigil as of today, and like to have the occasional cocktail. I've read warnings saying not to combine, so am I going to have to quit drinking? Anyone with experience I'd love to hear from you. ## Hi James, I'm not one to speak from personal experience, but according to umm.edu, there are no drug interactions listed between Nuvigil (armodafinil) and Alcohol. Based on these findings alone, I have no reason to believe that you'd experience complications upon using the two together in a responsible manner. Other drug interaction checkers I've come across do not list anything discrepancies either, so depending on where you read those warnings suggesting otherwise, it seems to me like the best thing to ...

I am a 64 year old male living in Spain & have been taking Sintrom on its own for about a week. I was previously taking 150mg of Heparin by injection daily + varing amounts of Sintrom. Whilst I understand and fully appreciate what the Dr.'s are doing for me,they say just 1 beer a day is permitable, that could present a problem when the temperature's touch the mid thirties, so what exactly is the effect of alcohol with Sintrom? ## mixing brandy with sintrom 4mg ## dringking brandy whilst ntaking sintrom 4mg ## Sintrom contains the active ingredient Warfarin, it is a blood thinner. They reason they warn against using this with alcohol is because alcohol also acts as a blood thinner, so it can severely increase your risk of bleeding. In addition, excessive amounts of alcohol ca...

I am currently on my first week of Qsymia. I need someone's honest opinion and I will ask my doctor too once I see her again. I am not a big drinker at all but when I go on vacation I do get a couple of drinks here and then or maybe once a day. It's my vacation and I want to enjoy it. Am I going to die if I have a drink or 2 or would you recommend stopping the medication for the week and half I am on vacation? ## Hi Steph, According to umm.edu's drug interaction tool, drinking alcohol while taking Qysmia is not recommended as it may increase or decrease blood levels of topiramate (one of the active ingredients in Qysmia) potentially resulting in more side effects and/or a less effective dose. They also goes on to note that the combination of alcohol and topiramate may cause ...

My husband is an alcoholic and trying hard to to stop drinking ,however this is very dangerous n we are wanting know how to slowly taper off and for how long without causing himself death or seizures ..any answers would be very appreciated our marriage depends on this for he is very angry on alcohol ## I am sorry about what you're dealing with. All addictions are tough. The best thing for him to do, for his own safety, would be to get medical help and possibly the support of something like AA. How much does he drink and how often? Does he spend any time sober? ## For withdrawal there is physical consequences such as seizures. He should stop cold turkey under guidance from your doctor who could prescribe drugs such as valium. Alcohol damages brain cells which resultsinthe above plus p...

Hello, I have been on Belviq for a little more than a week. It works great! I lightened my food portions and I still feel full before I finish it. I am still craving sweets but it is not as strong. I keep a bowl of red seedless grapes handy. It really helps. My question is this...on the weekend, it is nice to have a beer or a drink or two. Is this OK while I am taking Belviq? I can not find that information anywhere. Thank you. ## Hello, Harriet! How are you? Belviq can cause side effects, such as trouble concentrating, drowsiness and dizziness, so combining it with alcohol could worsen those effects, basically making one drink affect you as if you'd had 2 and so on. It is really best to avoid alcohol, while taking a prescription medication. However, if your doctor okays it, then yo...

My 18 year old son has been to out, and in-patient treatment programs for alcohol abuse. He seems to have no will power whatsoever when it comes to his friends and or drinking. He is an athlete in incredible shape. He works 5 days a week. He works out with 2 different trainers 5 days a week. He is supposed to be going to college to play football in August. He pushes his body to the limit all week, then on the weekend, he says he won't drink, but somehow always starts and doesn't stop till he's completely ...passed out. I've been hearing about medications to help control the urge to drink.Naltrexone,Topiramate. I'm hoping he can get a handle on it before it completely destroys his future.ANY HELP PLEASE. Kay

Since taking Victoza I feel like my stomach is digesting alcohol differently. I feel like I have a hangover the next day even if I just have a few drinks. ## Hello, Terry! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you're having. Likely, it is due to 2 issues, the first issue, which I am not sure you are aware of is that alcohol can lower your blood sugar levels, thus when you drink, it could be making it drop too low. Have you ever checked your levels, after having a few drinks? The next issue is that alcohol can enhance the side effects of a medication, so you may experience more nausea, dizziness and drowsiness than usual, after having a few drinks, as reported by the FDA. So, there is probably good reasons why you feel that way. Most medications, when combined with alcohol, ca...

What are the consequences of taking alcohol with high doses of epilizene for bipolar? ## Hello, William! How are you? It can increase your risk of experiencing side effects, which the FDA lists as possibly including nausea, dizziness, drowsiness and headache, thus, it would be best not to imbibe, without your doctor's approval. In those that have epilepsy, it can also lower their seizure threshold. Is there anything else I can help with?

Had surgery Wednesday and took 2 oxycodone that day. Haven't had any since then... Today is Friday. Is it safe to have a glass of wine tonight? ## Hello, Gigi! How are you? There shouldn't be any serious issues, as long as your doctor approves. You may still get a bit more dizzy and nauseous than usual, so one drink might affect you as if you'd had 2 and so on. Thus, it would be best to make sure you aren't driving, if you choose to imbibe. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?

You are not supposed to drink while on Lyrica. I made the big mistake of doing that. I took my dose in the morning and then got invited by some friends to go out. I do not usually drink, but started drinking around 9:30 pm. I was found in an alley behind a restaurant at 4 am. The last thing I remember was last call at 2am. I am only posting this to give a VERY strong warning not to drink while on this medication. Luckily I am OK and still alive. It is a horrible feeling to not know what happened in those 2 hours. Please do not drink while on Lyrica. ## I have been on Lyrica at various strengths from 200mg/day down to 50mg/day. I drink (probably more than I should) but I have never experienced any problems drinking the equivalent of 5 or so drinks while on this medication. I have experie...

I don't drink everyday but sometimes a couple nights in a row for events. I also take 75mg plavix. Is it safe? ## No, not really. Alcohol and Plavix can both cause blood thinning as side effects, according to the FDA, so taking them together heightens your risk of experiencing dangerous bleeding episodes. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, and easy bruising. How much do you usually drink?

can alcoholics be given restyl during sober periods and what could be the effects if such a person is having a higher BP reading? ## Restyl contains the active ingredient Alprazolam and most doctors will not give it to someone with an alcohol problem, due to the risks to the liver. It is a Benzodiazepine and as to the blood pressure, it can actually help lower that slightly, since it causes depression of the central nervous system.
