I FIRST STARTED AMPYRA ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO. I NOTICED RESULTS AFTER 10 DAYS. THE OVERALL STRENGTH TO MY LEFT SIDE WAS FANTASTIC, I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE MIRACLE I HAD BEEN PRAYING FOR. NOW IT SEEMS THAT INITIAL SURGE IS NOT THERE. MY LEGS DO FEEL STRONGER, BUT MY WALKING IS NOT ALL THAT GREAT. I LIVE IN THE M/WEST WERE WE HAVE HAD A HOT/HUMID SUMMER. I quit Ampyra as I only saw a difference for a bit of time. I'm on LDN now and getting my dosage correct. Things improving, it takes time. ## I started taking ampyra 2 1/2 years ago, and initially I improved a lot, because of a mix up with the third timed walk, my insurance did not approve the refill for about a month and a half. I deteriorated rapidly and in fact began walking WORSE than before I started taking it initially. That month and a half without it, I started using a cane and although I improved a little after starting up again, I continue to need a cane. I have MS diagnosed for over 34 years and was originally diagnosed with relapse and remitting. the last 10 years i have moved into chronic proggressive category. (i am 58 and still walk for short distances with a cane). I have been taking Ampyra for M.S. Symptoms for 1 month. I have taken 10 mg. 2x's/day as close to 12 hours apart as possible. I noticed improvement in speed of walking 2 days after I began taking it. but, I have also experienced much difficulty getting to sleep and staying sleep. I also take baclofen for spasticity. I have been taking Ampyra for 4 days. I have noticed a decrease in fatigue but headaches daily. The question is will they eventually go away on their own, or do I skip a day and see if they stop or quit til I see the doc ? ## Since last posting I have reduced amount to 1 per 24 hr. headaches are still occuring.2 Excedrin migraine seems to help.I have noticed an improvement in energy. ## I have been taking Ampyra for 4 days now I am feeling like the walking is slightly easier. Is anyone paying out of pocket for Ampyra? The monthly retail cost is prohibitive. If you don't qualify for financial assistance, it is next to impossible to take this drug without going bankrupt. All this for a drug with a very unimpressive track record. I'm having difficulty justifying this experimental journey unless the drug company supplies the meds at no cost. My neuro is putting me on ampyra, and I am excited about this. My biggest MS problem is lack of balance. I have MS and lymphedema. My leg doctor put me on trental 400mg 3x/day then my neurologist put me on Ampyra. Do they both do the same thing... Dilate the blood vessels in the legs? How long until I see results and side effect lengths. I am experiencing numbness in R hand and trouble urinating. ## Ampyra contains the active ingredient Dalfampridine, it is used to treat MS symptoms. That said, most medications can take 30days or more to reach their full effectiveness. There is no medication, however, that works for everyone. Ampyra deos it work? ## Ampyra contains the active ingredient Dalfampridine, it used to treat MS symptoms. On ampyra 2 days. Severe dizziness / light headedness. Does this get better with continued treatment? Ambien for insomnia? Advisable to take with ampyra? The first month of Ampyra 10mg was promising. Since then there's been quite a drop in effectiveness. At my next doctors appointment, I'm going to inquire about a possible doseage increase. For those that have had success, what doseage has had the best results? I do have faith that this will/can work, just looking for a possible better approach. ## SO far, Ampyra has seemed to be about a 50-50 medication, going by the other posts on here about it. There have been people that got great results from it and about the same number of people that didn't. There are even others like you, who seemed to do great, for awhile, then it kind of tapered off. I took my first dose of ampyra today and after 7 hours I had a terrible reaction. I have bad neuropathic pain in my legs, and about 7 hours after the dose, I felt like the neuropathy had been kicked up about 100 times. I literally felt like my legs were on fire. I jumped in the pool and immediately called the neuro's office to report the problem. I was told to stop it immediately, which I am very disappointed about. I had an allergic reaction to Tysabri, couldn't take Rebif, have problems with high dose steroids, and now this. I am pretty much to the secondary progressive stage, although I had a massive attack 15 months ago, and am now on Copaxone and Avonex duo therapy since 2/09. My biggest problem is fatigue. Is anyone taking another medication. Ex: Ritalin ? ## I take Ritalin when I have that walking through the mud feeling, particulary when weather is hot/humid. It's a HUGE help. I just take 1/2 dose (5 mg) most days, but sometimes have to take another in afternoon. Easy med...no side effects, but be careful you don't take too much cuz it'll make you jittery. Since Ive been on Amprya, i haven't taken ritalin, but do recommend it. Good luck ## I am doing great on Ritilan for fatigue. I used to take Provigil, but Ritilan is cheap and effective for me.

I have SPMS and have been taking Ampyra for a month. in the beginning I felt nothing but the side effects of lower back pain and increased balance issues. Those stopped, and I thought maybe it was helping me walk a bit stronger. Then the knee pain started. I didn't connect it to Ampyra at first. But I've found it listed as a side effect in a users forum. getting up from chairs is very painful and I believe the pain has made my walking worse. this is counterproductive and I wonder if I should continue. ## Knee pain isn't listed among the side effects reported by the FDA. Back pain is, as well as insomnia, dizziness, headache and constipation. Have you consulted your doctor to be sure? It would be best to have this checked out to rule out other possible causes. I been on amp since may 25th 2010. It took about 2 weeks to work. So needless to say, I thought it wasn't for me. However, when it kicked in I was almost running. I felt whole again. It lasted for about 10 minutes, then quickly back to the usual pain in the butt (ms). Whenever I drink coffee, I seem to get an extra boost in my walking, both in the length of time I can walk and my stability and energy. So, I guess the amp with dunkin donuts iced is a good combo for me. In this last week, though, I feel like the amp is no longer working. But I do know that one of the side effects of amp is an ms relapse. So I am wondering if this is what is happening to me. My level in this MS journey is - very weak and stiff on my left side of my body. I use a walker and wheelchair when going places. I started Ampyra about 3 months ago. Within 2 days I really started to feel it! I was able to turn over @ night in bed (I usually can't), I had more strength when I'd get up from a chair or sofa. Then about 3 weeks or so into starting Ampyra I had so many stressful situations happen in my life. Then I lost every good symptom relief I had. I was diagnosed with PPMS. My right leg feels stiff when I walk. I was thinking that Ampyra was intended for the other types of MS. But reading of the side effects, I'm doubting taking it. I am working on getting a Walk Aide. It works wonderfully for me. It's just expensive.
