I had a surgery in 1998 for "smashed" disks found during the surgery and after trying every narcotic known to man, I obtained immediate relief with methadone. I was on it for 15 years until the recent government fiasco, which IMHO had no business interfering as no one knows but the patient and their primary doctor just how severe the pain is. I have no clue why methadone works so well and other even more powerful narcotics don't, and for 15 years I lead a rather normal life. Now I've been cut back to 4 methadone a day plus MS-Contin and still three 10mg methadone provide me more relief than two 30mg MS-Contin not to mention the MS-Contin has nearly doubled my prescription bill. They took bone from my hip but had to insert a steel prosthesis as almost all of my disks were...

Has federal funding for methadone decreased since the "opiodemic"? I started taking opiates in 1992 because of extreme pain in my hip which I had suffered with since 1979. The medical profession gave me NSAID's and a small script for Tylenol-3. I have since had 2 hip replacements. I am 59 yrs old. I was on and off methadone for years and have been on it steady for 10 years and stayed clean. During this time I have gone from paying $0 to what will start next month at $360.00/mo. ## Manufacturers are free to set their own prices in the U.S. according to supply and demand. Thus, it really has nothing to do with federal regulations, but more to do with market competition and capitalism. The FDA warns that Methadone carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effec...

I was put on Diconal in 1993 after having struggled with real pain and non effective medicaments post RTA/'86, where I lost right leg below knee, with both wrists broken etc etc. Stress am not talking about phantom pains. Presently STILL. have open on end weeping 7.5" below knee stump. Because of ill fitting prostheses my right hip is knackered.. Hip op not feasible since developed venous ankle ulcers on remaining foot. Also have damaged sciatica both sides intermittently flaring. To this add neutofibrotoma, mostly quiet but currently one is enlivened in right shoulder area which lately hurts so much at times though has left my right thumb & index useless! Diconal use has reduced over years to 56 per week. Last week local Boots pharmacist said their warehouses were now empty...

I'm 50 years old and have been on Sertraline since about 1995 to 1997. I finally came to the conclusion that I am better off without it. (I know. I'm not sure why I stayed on it for so long) I have seen a lot of information on the Internet to finally make me cynical of the medical "profession" and the drug "community" to make me realize that it's a multi-billion dollar business. As this is my tenth day after I took the very last dose, I still do feel a little lightheaded, but much better than last week when I had some headaches, diarrhea, and a felt a little nervous. I have read this forum and really hurt to think some people are addicted to this drug, and many others, but cannot stop. My heart goes out to you. For every 100 people with a question here, it se...

I was perscribed accutane or roaccutane in the UK when I was about 19 (1997) all seemed well at first but in the last 15 years I have suffered from boils/systs mainly around my face and head area, my hair started going grey not long after taking the medicine and yesterday I found out I have arthritis in my wrists. I'm only 34 and none of these problems are prevalent in my family. My advice is, stay clear or try other alternative medicine or put up with the acne, If I could go back I would rather have the acne than the possible side efects of this drug.

Does anyone have problems with the new Colorado "Recommendations" Laws that limits non-cancer patients to 120mg. per day? I have had 4 different doctors quit because it's become ridiculous for them in helping actual patients. I have been disabled since 1996 and have undergone 11 abdominal surgeries. I have never abused pain medication, nor filled one early. I understand trying to stop the illicit drug and Script abuse, but they are hurting myself and other legitimate patients. I wish there was a group who had the ability to bring a legal case against these policies, or something to help. The current 120mg. limit just isn't helping enough to stop pain, but it seems there is no choice. No wonder people turn to illicit drugs. Anyone else with the same problem? I would appre...

I am in the Charlotte NC area. I have had Chronic Pain since 1992. My savior, Dr Senter retired. I have now gone to hell!! I have fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease, a min of 8 ruptured discs in the cervical and lumbar regions. I also have chronic debilitating Migraines. The Dr's I have now each seem to have their "favorite" procedure an each of them only want to do that one thing because they are convinced it works. It doesn't seem to matter that it isn't helping me, they just keep wanting to try that "one more time" !! With my pre-retired Dr my pain level actually saw a 2 at times and almost always stayed under a 7. My pain level now is staying at 8,9, & 10!! I have Nooo life like this!! I can't do anything except HURT!! I need to find someone ...

Sadly Glutethimide (Doriden) was discontinued by the last remaining manufacturer Halsey Drug (HD 550 on white round tablet) in late 1992. The DEA practically forced the FDA to make it a schedule ll drug with the ridiculously low quota of six grams. They were the best, especially with codeine ("Hits", "Cibas & codeine "). Yes they were abused but nothing like the opioid abuse epidemic of today. The last countries that used them were Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Doriden inducted a liver enzyme CYPD26 if I recall correctly, that made the codeine convert to morphine 80 to 90% instead of the usual 10-15%. It was very long lasting and effective. Finding any Doriden would be like finding the holy grail. ## Yes, Glutethimide combined with codeine was big in my part of the ...

Looking for a good pain management doctor in the Madison or Platteville area. I have been on methadone for severe pain following a failed double spinal fusion in 1999. The pain has been increasing lately, especially taking care of my 15 yr old daughter with special needs. My current "pain" doctor won't increase my dose or even discuss other options to help with pain. I need to be able to take care of myself and my daughter and need to have more pain relief. ## Hi Michelle, Sorry to hear about your situation. I may not have a doctor I can refer you to, but if it helps I can provide you with a couple links that may be of service to you in so far as locating pain management doctors within your general area. Input your city or zip code for narrowed results: {link removed because...

Redbook 2009 page 375 "Pharmacys Fundamental Reference" 100 tabs of five mg Ovation Pharmaceutical "Desoxyn" is $381.65 wholesale, and is $457.98 retail, "cash in fist" or $4.58 per tablet. I used to take the former Abbott Labs of North Chicago, Illinois, the former 10mg and 15 mg. "Desoxyn Gradumet tablets, which were available at least from 1965 until 1999, these were extended (sustained release tablets) not the instant release 5 mg ones that Ovation is licensed to manufacture for Abbott. The 10 mg were orange, the15 mg were yellow. Even the white ones, 5 mg, were embossed with the classic little reverse "a" in a small letter. Much superior, in my humble opinion, were Abbott's former stimulant called "Desbutal" which also were methamphet...

Can you get ethchlorvynol today? If so, under what name? That’s as detailed as I can get. ## The Ethchlorvynol drug monograph here on MedsChat, states that "Ethchlorvynol is a GABA-ergic sedative and hypnotic/soporific medication that was developed by Pfizer back in the 1950's. In the United States it was sold by Abbott Laboratories under the tradename Placidyl. Abbott discontinued production in 1999, after which Placidyl was available for about a year in the United States. It is no longer prescribed in the United States due to unavailability, but it is still available in some countries and would still be considered legal to possess and use with a valid prescription." As to which countries still carry Ethchlorvynol, this remains a mystery to me. However, I hope the inf...

Hi, I have had Avascular Necrosis, and Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (stage 4). I have implanted Pain pump that infuses the medication directly into the Spinal Fluid. Over the past several years, I developed extremely "violent" itching. This itching leads to bruising in very large areas. I am also on Coumadin, currently 3mgs a day. I had two bouts with BiPulmonary Embolism(s) back in 1995-1996. I have been prescribed Atarax, Benedryl, and Allegra; all for this itching. I have used virtually OTC cream, spray, and additional Benedryl when I "flare up. This itch is driving me NUTS, and has gone through the same frustration of everything NOT working. I do have a "laundry list" of Meds, as well, other Medical problems that were diagnosed after my knee surgery. I need someo...
