wow, i came on here to see how to wean my son off vyvanse after being on it for only 3 weeks - he's been agressively hostile this week and is scaring me, he's only NINE, and now Im thinking maybe it's the drug. Reading all these responses this may be a problem with this drug, I wonder how common it is? He's so angry he's thought about killing people he's told me this week! He will start counseling, but I sure am hoping weaning him off this drug will change this angry child back to my happy one!

Help! Was just informed yesterday that this medicine is a meth/amphetiamine, (sorry, wrong spelling I know), and that all the horrible feelings, and my horrible existence the past several months have all been from this medication. Sick, incredibly scary lack of energy without taking my pill, (I went from 50 to 70 mgs), and after reazling that my body has become addicted my doctor took me off of it yesterday. I am so sick~no energy, angry, (and I have little children), beyond depressed. Just hopeless. How long does this last?? I can't take this. Thank you.

I feel a lot better after having read this post. I completely agree with a lot of the comments made about the subtle side effects of Vyvanse. There is certainly the increased anxiety, which tends to build up over time. I empathize with the couple that is having to attend marriage counseling. I would suggest toning down the dosage as it is almost surely contributing to the hostility. And, from my own experience, I can say that withdrawal should be a slow, and gradual process. You'd have to be an idiot to stop cold turkey. I generally take 100 mg/day. When I get a break, I cut down to 50 mg/day immediately. Every subsequent drop is made on a weekly basis - if I feel I can go lower than I do; if not, then I don't rush it.

i have been taking vyvanse for about a year and have some of the side effects talked about such as aggetation, weight loss, dry mouth i would suggest excersise while taking the drug. first of all it helps your body burn the drug and also is a great release for stress which i found adds to the aggetation of the drug. for me the advantages out weigh the side effects. it seems as though as long as i stay busy i have no problems so, i only take the drug when i know i am going to have a very busy and stressful day because those are the days i need it i do not take it on the days i am doing nothing because it is not hard to focus on TV. I think the drug works. i would suggest to use it in a different way because the drug does not have to be in your system for a period of time for it to work it works shortley after you take it and maybe if your body dosen't need it that day it has adverse effects. this is just the way i use it it has really helped me.

@panicmom: Vyvanse has ruined my LIFE. My doc doesn't believe me and now thinks I must not have ever had add or probs like that at all, since I was admitted to the E.R. after a major panic attack. (I thought I was having a heart attack/stroke or dying.) Since that time, I have had many close calls and have been disoriented/confused. I've experienced a lot of derealization (if you google this, it lists symptoms.) Vyvanse is horrible. I've always had a bit of anxiety & I exercise regularly. After seeing that I had most OVERDOSE symptoms on 40-50mg, I stopped cold turkey. Don't know how much longer I can make it, but do not want this drug to kill me over.

Wow...After reading this forum I have to say that what everybody is experiencing is so right on. I'm 34 and was recently diagnosed with ADD. I'm a single dad and my 7 year old son is on 15mg of Focalin XR. I never knew what ADHD was until his teacher in k-garten, doctor and me all got together to figure it out. Focalin has helped him and it wears off which helps his appetite come back around for dinner. My dad has ADD, I have it and my little man has it. After his diagnosis I was diagnosed after several years of taking medications that treated my symptoms of ADD and never treating the ADD I started Vyvanse. All I can say is what I experienced. In the beginning it was great. I had focus, energy and accomplished so much. I actually went on a hunt in Wyoming the first month on it and hiked 34 miles in 6 days carrying a 40 pound pack and rifle. I could accomplish anything. This was October 1-10, 2009. By mid November I became more and more aggitated and hostile. It was like everyday my glass got a little more full with lack of patience and aggitation. I went back to see my Doctor in December and we decided to stop cold turkey. I was taking 50mg. I weigh 200 and I'm 6'1. I am so happy I stopped. However, I must say that now it has been a month, I have no energy and all I want to do is sleep and lay around. No motivation and no drive. I am starting to feel, and let me highlight starting to feel like exercise to get some positive endorphins (spelling ?) flowing. My Doctor told me that out of all his patience on Vyvanse, only 20% does it work with. The other 80% experience that same side effects as me. For the 20% that it works for, great... but know the odds. I'd rather take something that wears off quick, verus Vyvanse that, to me lasted for 18 hours in my system. I dont know how long this tiredness will last; however, I have decided no meds and to clean my system out and exercise. My psychologist/life coach advised I take fish oil, and vitamins in the meantime. For me, I'm glad I have an answer about the condition I have and now its a focus on learning about it and I'm trying to take nothing to treat it. I made it 33 years without, and I found that if I keep my schedule full and I stay busy I get things done. For those of you who feel tired...I'm right there with you. How long will this last, I will say that although it will be out of your system in a week, I believe it has some physiological (spelling again???) changes that take longer to wear off. I'd be curious to those of you that stopped like me, how long did it take for you to feel 100% normal like you did before taking this medication. Also, for those of you that this works for, great... but I will never allow my son to take this medication. It does have a dependency/addiction aspect of it too. Not huge, but its there. Good luck to all of you that are stopping this and to you out there that are on it, at least be aware of this. There is an 80% chance you are not one where this works.

My girlfriend's 5 year old son is on vyvanse. Normally he is a very loving child, but when he comes down from it, he is EXTREMELY aggressive. He hits, kicks, yells, and now even bites his mom. She takes him to his Dad's as she works a part time job every night at a tax preparing service, and the only time she gets to see him is when he is coming off this med. He even has hit and kicked his grandmother. He tells his mom he does not love her...it is BAD!! After some time (around 5 pm) he calms down. Unfortunately during tax season, she does not get to enjoy her boy after the effects wear off. Any suggested alternatives to this drug?

I just stop taking vyvance 2 days ago. I was taking 60mg a day. I have always had depression and insomnia and always take anti-depresants and Ambien. I started back school to get a BS and told my Dr. I was having a hard time focusing. He prescribed me Vyvanse. I have been taken it for about 6 to 7 months and started to notice a harder crashes during the day, bad headaches, and a major increase in blood pressure. I was suppose to pick up my prescribition but didnt get a chance. I decided to try to get off of them. 1st day wasn't bad. The 2nd day my mood was a litttle better but my hands started to tingle, get hot, and feel like they are swollen. Im hoping for this want last long. I can handle this as long as it doesn't get worse.

I've been taking Vyvanse for over a year now. In the beginning, tasking or staying focused was fabulous. After a while, I felt I needed a higher dose. After taking 70mg for a while, I needed Red Bull to be able to study. Someone suggested I go to an endocrinologist who told me to get off of all meds for 6 weeks before I could get blood work done. Thankfully, my doctor helped me get off of Prozac and Vyvanse. I got very tired, no energy, and felt like a wet rag. But, this does go away. I finally discovered I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which may explain depression, cognitive problems, weight gain, etc. Then, I realized I could not keep my train of thought and asked my doctor if I could go back on Vyvanse. After 3 days, I felt irritable, too hyper, and drugged (25 mg). I took myself off and am now going through the tired phase. My doctor thought I might try Strattera, as this is not the same type of drug as Vyvanse. Funny, but in college I was on diet pills (which were legally prescribed) and now know why I was able to do so well. Tell me, is there any doctor who can truly diagnose and prescribe? I'm so tired of pills and not feeling like myself. My only hope is that the endocrinologist will help me finally get to the bottom of all of this.

I took Vyvanse for about a month. Before that I was on adderall instant release and then adderall extended release. These drugs contain amphetamine, so the worst critic would likely say this is legal speed.

I've stopped taking the Vyvanse, and after four months of using these drugs, I can definitely say that yes, there are withdrawal effects. I sort of figured this would be the case, because I became addicted to the medication. I longed for that high feeling it gave me each day, but with each day the feeling lasted shorter and shorter. Eventually, the vyvanse, like the adderall, was useless. It lasted about about two hours each day, and the rest of the time I was prone to panic attacks and severe anxiety issues. My intake of Xanax went up substantially, so now I was addicted to Vyvanse and Xanax. I could not imagine functioning at all without these meds, although they now hardly did anything, I was stuck, because when I tried not to take them at all, the anxiety was unbearable. I felt like a complete zombie, and I had to take the pill just to ease the pain.

The most surprising part of all this, I think, is that the doctor did not address the probability that the drugs will cease working this fast, and the difficulty of withdrawing from the meds when this is the case. Whenever I tried to discuss my worries about the drug working a shorter time and eventually likely not working at all, my comments were disregarded, and I was told to seek psychological help to address my anxiety issues and self-destructive thinking. Well, it seems that my self-destructive thinking was right, and let me tell you, IT IS NO FUN GETTING OFF THESE MEDS.

I myself have been on Vyvanse 40mg and have been off of it for 8 months and I still have a hard time functioning without it. However, the Army says I cannot take it. I found that yes when I was on it I felt like I accomplished so many more tasks. Now just like before I was on it I feel like a slug that cannot get off the couch. It has nothing to do with me being lazy. I just don't have the drive. I'm not fat, and I want to do the things I used to do, I just can't. I have since put on 20 pounds, I am just under my max for Army standards, but still considered normal weight.

My son is diagnosed with ADHD and has been on vyvanse 30 MG as well. He fare's better on it than he did with Adderall XR 30 MG. He tended to have more psychopathic outbursts when he was on Adderall, as I had stomach aches when I was on Adderall. for him (12YROLD) this has been the best one for him. Yes he still has these outbursts but before they were almost daily, now they are just when he doesn't get enough to eat. I know that has something to do with it. It's almost like DR. Jeckyll / MR. Hyde syndrome.

Thanks for the posts everyone. My son, 16, was having increasing school problems, and the doc suggested coming off Focalin (no real negative effects) to Vyvanse. It seems to have been a catastrophe. Within about 3 weeks, he started becoming very dark, very irritated, everything seemed negative to him. He had no affection anymore. I think he may have a tendency towards some manic behavior or something of that nature, and Vyvanse brought out the worst in him. We decided to stop it after a month of use. He's still irritable and defiant, but I do see some of his hard edge starting to come off. I hope this doesn't take more than a couple of weeks. I'd rather he struggles some with schoolwork, than become semi-psychotic. Watch out with this stuff. The doctors don't warn you - but it's all on the warning label!!!

I am 29 years of age. I have been having 'behavioral issues' since I was a child growing up in pakistan, and came to USA around when I was 12 (culture shock, different family (living with mother here, left father in Pakistan) and since then I've been here in the states. At 17 I was prescibed wellbutrin because my parents took me to a psychiatrist because I was cutting myself and I was depressed or whatever, I didn't feel depressed... I dunno. Anyway, I didn't take it for too long, only a few weeks. Then a few years later at age 23 I was prescribed another anti depressant and I took it for a few months and didn't really notice any difference. Now, 1 month ago, at age 29, I started having nightmares and flash backs. I've been having some dreams over the course of my life which reoccur every 8-12 years... and the dreams are about when I was 4 and raped/abused by my babysitter. Always had to battle with it in my mind, pain, shame, the fact that I never told anyone and I should have said something then... anyway, all my life I've never had good relations with anyone, or trusted anyone, always had maternal problems with my mother, hated her all my life... I don't know why... my dad filled my head with hatred toward her while growing up in Pakistan with him, and then at age 12 when I finally came to USA and saw my mother I started having problems with her. Anyway, lots of things have been adding up and past few years I felt myself losing my patience with everyone, I started avoiding people and just stayed in my house all the time. I lived in Oklahoma City for 4 years and New York City for 5 years by myself and did fairly alright, not too good though... always depressed. I can' have a normal relationship with anyone including women...

All these things were adding up and it came to a point where I couldn't do anything in life. I just couldn't get the thoughts of myself being raped at age 4, coupled with everything else and no matter how hard I tried I could not. On top that I lost my job in NYC and decided to start my own software development company. I did well for a year, and then I fell back into the depression and couldn't do anything but stare at my cieling for hours on end while still in bed in the morning. Nothing held my interest. I wanted to do nothing at all no matter how much I wanted to do it. I could never focus on anything, and I've had impulse control problems since I was a child.

Now that you have a little background, here is my current situation. I am 29 now, and a month ago in march 2010, I got fed up with my life and went to a psychiatrist and pretty much just told him EVERYTHING, and held nothing back, and I felt no shame and no shyness. I just laid it out. He talked to me for an hour, then he called my friends and family members. The whole session lasted about 2 hours and then he basically said that I've been misdiagnosed my entire life. I've not got depression, but ADHD, subtype 2, impulse control and ADD. He prescribed me Vyvanse a month ago.

I've never done any drugs in my life other than in college, and then only very rarely to experiment, like Acid, Coke, Meth, Weed, Opiates. Before college and after college, I've never done drugs. I've not done anything but smoke pot in the last 10 years. Just pot thats it. I told my doctor that too.

Anyway, the first day i took it, 30mg, I was tweaking like I've never tweaked before. I WAS HAPPY! I went outside and looked around the trees, the grass the sky, the nice breeze, the sunlight, and that was the happiest/best day of my life and for absolytey no reason at all... just woke up, took the med, and few hours later I was the hapiest man on this earth. I've never taken speed before , and I'm not used to it.

So the doctor told me to open the capsule and only eat half the powder for a week and then report to him. I took 15mg Vyvase for about 2 weeks and after that it started to make me feel kinda crashed out around late afternoon early evening.

I told him everything when I saw him after two weeks. I told him what time I took the med, when I woke up, what I ate, what I drank, how hydrated or full I was, what physical excersions I did (I KEPT A LOG OF EVERY DAY and even now I do).

Its been one month... I've got super focus... I'm not jittery... I'm much calmer.. the relaly really small small life things in everyday life that people consider irrtations or just nuisance, I USED TO GET ENRAGED ABOUT THAT! NOT ANYMORE! I just let s*** slide... not many things can break my calm now... I can program faster, think faster, code faster, find solutions faster, type faster, get along with people better.... and most of all..

I STARTED TO THINK BEFORE I SPOKE OR DID ANY PHYSICAL ACTION!

THAT IS THE BIGGEST THING! AMAZING! My impulse control seemed to have started to get under control slowly. The doctor said it will take a while before you really get used to the medicine and also with THERAPY and active behaviour modification and positive thoughts and etc. you'll do very well.

Also, he advised me to not keep it a secret. I talked to my two best friends that are girls, and I told them what happened to me... and I started to cry... and they told me that they went through something similar. It seems both my best friends were abused also as children and unlike me, not only by one man, but by many and hit and beaten too by their dads and abused... and it became easier to talk about it. I now talk to people and increase awareness about leaving your kids with baby sitters. What happened to me and f***ed up my life should nto happen to anyone. Children don't deserve this lifetime of shame and pain and anger and guilt.

Anyway, thats my story, and Vyvanse has been a miracle drug for me. I don't believe in God, as I think no one who claims that they know of a supernatural omnicient entitiry have provided any evidence for it. As such, I won't say thank god... I would say thank myself for taking the initiative to be totally open with my psychiatrist and tell him everything, EVERYTHING!

REMEMBER GUYS, DRUGS ALONE DO NOTHING FOR YOU. YOU NEED ACTIVE BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION AS WELL AS THERAPY, UNDERSTANDING AND COMPASSIONATE PEOPLE TO BE AROUND, AND PEOPLE WHO WON'T PUT YOU DOWN ON YOUR SMALL MISTAKES. IT TAKES MORE THAN DRUGS TO GET BETTER, AND I WISH ALL OF YOU THE BEST OF LUCK.

PLEASE SHARE MY STORY WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

I have been taking Vyvanse for three years after being diagnosed with ADHD. I started losing a lot of weight so I decided to start weaning myself off of it. I found that doing so left me Very tired. I'm 24 years old and had to negotiate with myself to get out of bed. A week ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. This condition was not present before the Vyvanse. I noticed in an earlier post that someone else also had this problem. I am doing some investigation to see if this is a negative outcome of using vyvanse since it is a newer drug.
