Withdraw From Topamax

Updated

So,
I was on Topamax once before a little over a year ago for my chronic migraines, and it took away my migraines but it basically made me stupid with the knowledge of a 5 year old, and I was having complete body numbness so my doctor took me off but I never had any withdraw problems.
Here I am a year later after trying various medications that were unsuccessful at taking my migraines away, my nuerologist perscribes me to Trokendi XR (which is topamax just like off brand) and he tells me that it wouldn't have as bad of side effects as Topamax... Well he was wrong because my side effects were worse. My body always felt numb and I could never feel my face. I went back to having a low IQ and I just couldn't take it anymore. I went and saw a new nuerologist at Cleveland Clinic a little over a month ago, and he decided to taper me off the Trokendi. This was in a fast 1 week period though, not stretched out. For weeks and still continuing, I seem to be having withdraw from the medication or something because I'm having extreme anxiety to the point where I can't leave my house (even though I take Venlafaxine 150 mg daily for anxiety) and extreme depression even though I don't have any history of depression. I have no stress or anything to bring these on. My stomach feels tensed up and my muscles ache, and I feel like I can't catch my breath. Does anyone have a similar thing happening? What should I do? I'm not sure if I can take this much longer

Hello, Kerri! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about the problems that you're having.

Yes, they could be due to withdrawals from the medication, but you should double check with your doctor to be sure.

You may need to try a different medication for depression and anxiety.

The symptoms you've described at listed among the rare side effects by the FDA, they can also be symptoms of overdose, so it sounds like you are just very sensitive to the Topiramate and need to stay away from it. I've had that problem with several medications myself.

Have things improved, at all?

How many mg were you on? I had to star on 25 at night and. I have stayed on that for weeks now. I get side effects but they are not near waht they were when I was taking 50 mg twice a day! My body could not handle that much. I havenot had one migraine since I started the 25 mg at night. Have you started on that low of a dose?

Valuable medication for patients that can tolerate, hell for those that cannot, be very, very careful. Pity the elderly patients that become psychotic and not sure why, this med could definitely be the culprit. Be aware!

Hello! I've been on Topamax 200 mg a day for 7 months now. I finally have relief from my migraines. A couple years ago I had a tubular pregnancy that erupted. I didn't have much pain, just felt like something wasn't right. My dr told me I had a higher pain tolerance and with some things I do , but after over a year of 10-14 days a month of migraines I needed something. Anyways, 7 months of topamax and I feel like a hypochondriac! I eat very clean, workout 4-5 days a week but I feel awful! Pretty much every symptom of fibermyalgia ..is it possible this could all be from this medication? Pain in my legs, shoulders, neck, low back, jaw, left eye blurry, rapid heart rate, problems sleeping....symptoms started off slow then increased. I have know idea who to see and what to do!

Go back to the doctor that prescribed it, to be titrated off. It is not in your head, all of those symptoms make you feel that you are a hypochondriac but you have become sensitive. It was a horrible drug! Good for those that do not have reactions, but hell for those that do! Good Luck, blessings!
