Why The Sugar?

Updated

Just wondering if anyone knows the answer to this: I take Actiq for my migraines and works great most of the time but is really doing a number on my teeth. I've heard that the lozenge form of Fentanyl (Fentora) has no sugar in it at all, but a lot of people I've talked to say it's not as long lasting as the Actiq and their pain tends to re-occur quicker. Why can't they make the Actiq sugar free?

I can't find any details on this, but my first guess is that it probably has to do with disguising the taste of the medication. Fentanyl is a narcotic and they are known to be very bitter and it would take a lot to make sure that they didn't completely gross someone out.

In addition, the use of actual sugars as a sweetener opens them up to a much broader market, as many people can't use artificial sweeteners for various reasons.

Any regular, long-term use of narcotics will harm your teeth, which is why most drug addicts or long-term pain management patients end up losing theirs or suffering with severe damage, if they can't afford good dental care. Narcotics tend to leach minerals from your body and they also cause dry mouth, which allows bacteria to sit on your teeth.

I am a prime example of this, because I was on pain management for many years and my teeth are no in horrendous shape, but I have no insurance to do anything about it.

Thanks verwon, I guess that makes sense, I never thought about people not being able to take artificial sweetener (although you'd think they could make it anyway and just put a warning on it; not that many people take Actiq in comparison to other pain meds, nobody I've talked to has even heard of it) Have you had any experience with Fentora in comparison?

migraineinmi, no, I'm sorry, but I don't. The only one that I ever tried using was the Fentanyl patch, I only used one, because it made me very sick and that was many years ago.

Since Fentora still contains Fentanyl, I'd think it should also work pretty well for your pain, though. The lozenges also seem to be available in a good range of doses.

Does anyone have experience using this?
