Uses Of Melatonin

How effective is melatonin for sleep?
Appreciate a answer to my query as i'm contemplating melatonin for
some of elderly people residing in a old folks home. (btw their ages range from late 60s
to late 80s).
Is there any other medication for elderly folk with insomnia?
Is it advisable for old folks to take sleep medication on alternative nights only to prevent dependency.? Tq for any answer to my query.
