Does Ty Ms c1071 appeal to kids as a recreational drug?
I found some on a friend of my kids and seemed hesitant to tell me what they were for.

I realize this post is from several months ago, but I just want to make sure the correct information is here for any future readers and knowledge seekers.

Regarding recreational use, YES, kids will take decongestants and cold remedies for recreational reasons.

This drug contains Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Guaifenesin and Phenylephrine.

Both the Dextromethorphan and the Phenylephrine can cause a high like feeling, as well as shakes, jitters and etc. The same effects that many people got from using the Pseudoephedrine that used to be in this medication.

If they take several at a time, more than the recommended dosage, then, of course, they will experience even more of these effects.

This is just one of the reasons that products containing Pseudoephedrine were moved behind the counter and stores have been forced to be careful how many packages they let someone buy at once, and some have even gone as far as to refuse to sell OTC cold remedies to anyone under 18.

Now, if a child, teen or adult is abusing this type of drug, it can have serious health repercussions. Taking too much at once can lead to severe medical problems such as heart attack, seizure and etc.

You definitely want to speak to them about this and explain the dangers. Even if they claim they aren't abusing it, having that chat to let them know how serious such actions could be is a good idea.

Each tablet of this contains 325mgs of Acetaminophen. Used as recommended, it is normally a very safe drug, which is why it is available OTC. However, if someone is taking this to get the high effects, then they can end up getting too much Acetaminophen, which could be DEADLY!

Acetaminophen is toxic is amounts as small as 4000mgs or 4grams in 24 hours. When you reach that amount it can cause liver failure, kidney failure, other organ damage and lead to a very slow and agonizing death.

So 10 of these pills would give you 3,250mgs, an amount that is not hard to hit when someone is taking them recreationally. So just adding 3 more tablets would put you at 4,225mgs and past the toxic dose.

Many kids like to have what they call candy parties. You have probably heard or read about such things in the news. They grab whatever meds they can find in someone's medicine chest, then they go to a party and they dump them all into a large bowl and mix them together. Throughout the party, they all just grab handfuls like they would from a dish of M&Ms and swallow them down.

So in these instances they are causing double trauma to their bodies, they are combining drugs and alcohol.

The basic problem is that most kids think that if something is available over the counter, so it can be bought in virtually any store you walk into, or if it is prescribed by a doctor so it is legal and not something cooked up in someone's garage, then it is safe and they can have fun without worrying about overdosing.

I know from when my own son talked about their drug talks at school, that they don't explain this type of thing to kids. They don't want to scare kids away from taking needed medications, so they just avoid discussing the dangers of abusing them.

So yes, it is definitely time to make sure your son knows the facts, before he does permanent physical damage to himself.
