Hello, Janet! How are you?

Tramadol can be used to suppress coughing spasms, it tends to suppress the cough reflex.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Give me a break tramadol is not an narcotic. I've been taking it for 6 years and it does help with pain.

Thanks for the info. I'm not the least bit concerned that it could be addictive.

Let me be clear, i have chronic pain and yes they can be habit forming and if you stop immediately you will feel discomfort for a few days but nothing compared to narcotics.

I've been taking Tramadol HCL 50mg tabs (9 a day) for 2 years now and let me tell you, trying to come off of these things is 10x worse than trying to come off of Oxycontin (I'm not joking, I've done both for years). It's like H withdrawal, almost identical. I have seizures, brain zaps, uncontrollable shaking, almost unbearable suicidal thoughts and have attempted suicide 2 times trying to come off of them. Do not take these babies lightly. My doctor has been trying to help me by giving me liquid form with a dropper to start the detox process. It's going to be hell, but I think I can do it.

Who ever posted this message is correct. I have been in healthcare for over 35 years. Tramadol may not technically be an opiod derivative but it is addictive. Most things that do what is not naturally to your body will have some odd rebound or withdrawal, even nose drops for congestion. Tramadol makers have been telling doctors for many years that it is not effective and they depend on this information. I will tell you most pharmacists will warn you and Tramadol is addictive. Please read on to other posts. You can get off this medication, but it is simply like most medications and alcohol, you can't believe that you can control this again and go back to use them. IF YOU ARE OVER 24 years of age then one way to assist pain control and many other things is THC. THC is a problem for brain development so it is not for the young. CBD's are better, but the less of everything you take is better. We simply have to be willing to live with some degree of discomfort and find ways to produce brain highs that are totally normal. I know many of you won't like my post but it is the best information that I know it well tested and true.

I started taking tramadol for my cough about 9 months ago. I have had a chronic cough since 2009 and tramadol is the only thing that has helped me. Good luck with whatever you do because I know how bad a chronic cough can be.

Cough started 10/99 following thyroiditis. After much testing, different drugs and mayo clinic diagnosis of autonomic neuropathy my ENT said lets try tramadol. August 9 2004 my life changed. Been taking 50mg. Bid since then.

My ENT prescribed me the same thing. I'm hoping this will work. Not sure if I will get a response on here

I also
Have a chronic cough since 08 and take tramadol to control it. Nothing else works. I have seen about 5 doctors and finally have determined the source is bronchial inflamation. Going off inflamation causing foods does seem to help. Good luck with your issue.

My little 3 1/2 pound Chihuahua has a chronic cough which may be the result of a collapsing trachea. We have tried hydrocodone and torbutrol. Tramadol works the best. She gets .5 ml every 8-12 hours. On the bottle it says 56 tramadol 15 mg/ml oral sus.

I have to say that it has worked and I only take 1/2 a pill as needed. This has been the only medication that has worked. I'm not addicted and it doesn't cause me any side effects besides calming my cough. Thank you God! I've taken it for a day a few months now and I'm amazed. Glad I made this decision and lost without my pills if my coughing starts. It has gave me control again.

Hi all,

I agree on the Tramadol being a non-narcotic, but it sure acts like one. I was prescribed 50 mg to take when my neck gets real bad, which, thank God, is not often, maybe once a month.

I wanted to join the conversation because I am very gun-shy about addictive "things" since I found I was addicted to 1 mg a day of Clonazapam. After years of taking no more than that dosage, and realizing I could not quit it without having bad withdrawals, in the last, 2 months I have weaned myself down to .5. I am so thrilled, and slow is the way with that drug.

Back to the tramadol. I've had a "choking" cough since last Friday (a virus, maybe flu) so the doc gave me codeine with robitussin. I felt my throat was turning inside out so I took just a bit more than prescribed. I still had some regular Robitussin (non AC) and I am using that and I guess saving the rest of the Robitussen w/AC for emergency "coughing" as I was afraid to use it all up.

I have no history of abusing drugs, I'm sort of a health nut geared toward natural remedies but nothing worked on this crud.

Anyway, my question is, can I take a tramadol with the plain Robitussin, or have you guys been talking about a different form of tramadol for coughs? I can't imagine just taking a tramadol and having that fix my cough, but if it is working like that, I can try since I have lots of that on hand.

If you are wondering why I don't go back to the doctor, I've been twice already, and once to the emergency room. I live in a tiny town with very limited medical help and I'm sick!! LOL! I haven't lost my sense of humor at least. But oh yeah, I also have been diagnosed with bronchitus, and now, a sinus infection.

I contracted a throat infection the other day; I also have severe IBS or SIBO and cannot use normal cough suppressants; lost 16 kilos; am 36 kgs now; I had some tramadol on hand; just thought it might help stop the coughing; yes I think it has helped; seems to have eased off!Re

9 a day??? That’s drug abuse. Of course, it can be addictive IF YOU TAKE 50mg 9x’s A DAY! *side eye* That’s enough to tranquilize a horse. No responsible (key word) doctor would prescribe that 9x’s a day, which leads me to believe that——an intervention, not some droplets, is needed for you.

I have taken tramadol 50 mg on 6 or 7 separate occasions when I had bronchitis and coild not sleep due to the cough. One time it did not seem to help much. It worked great all the other times - a single tablet pretty much eliminated the cough all night long. I had no side effects. I know two other people that also got excellent results with using tramadol for cough.

I had a GP several years ago that mentioned its use for his cough. I've had a "no sleep cough" for three weeks and tried tramadol last night. One 50mg at bedtime and one about 3:00 am and I finally got a good nights sleep. I've used it before fir back issues and had no problems so am not afraid of dependence.

The FDA approved dosage range for tramadol is 50 to 100 mg every 4 to 6 hours, so you can take up to 12 a day of the 50 mg tablets.
