Teeth Problems After Taking Prolia

Updated

I took Prolia two months ago. I am developing loose teeth and sore spots on my gums. Have others experienced similar problems after taking Prolia? I go to the dentist regularly and have had no dental problems for several years.

Hello, Dorrie! How are you?

You should see your dentist to have this checked out. In certain rare cases, Prolia can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, it's unlikely, but it would be best to have it checked out, to be sure.

Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include headache, vertigo, sciatica, anemia and rash.

Is there anything else I can help with?

I'm going to my Dentist for an X-ray of jaw bone tomorrow. Just started hurting this weekend which is Memorial Day weekend. So far, I have had every side effect that Prolia offers and my Primary Care Doc is quite worried about me. It says the peak of Prolia is 26 days but lingers in the body for as long as 11 months. Amgen wrote we are supposed to receive a 'Dear Patient Letter'. I received zero and not even told to take Calcium/Vitamin D. Results of blood tests will be in tomorrow so I will post those when I get them. Liver. kidneys, EKG and chest x-ray shows all is well. Also have hives boils rash starting under my left arm. Calcium test was a little high and that is wonderful.

I'm having severe jaw and teeth issues. Have had necrotic bone removed from my gums four times. Now having severe jaw, chin and cheekbone pain. Eating makes it worse. We need a legal suit or something to get compensated for the pain and expense we're having to bear due to this drug.

I had severe jaw pain from just one injection the latter part of April 2015. Yesterday I went to my dentist. I do not have ONJ, but it is from a muscle in my right arm where the Prolia was injected and has caused a muscle on the same side to get very unhappy in my mouth. He said it is very difficult to get this with just one injection but I think he is 'thinking' more about it's predecessors - Reclast and Boniva. Prolia is in a world of it's own. You will have to go to a specialist and they will remove as much dead bone in your mouth as is possible and give you large amounts of antibiotics and a special mouth rinse. You may or may not be able to have implants or dentures. It all depends on how much jaw bone Prolia destroys. It makes me very sad to write this to you but that's what mine told me yesterday. Also make sure you call the FDA if appropriate for you and definitely the nurses at AMGEN. I'm so very sorry for you. Definitely a BAD drug.

Yes, have intense jaw pain, so far no loose teeth. On pain meds around the clock under the care of a pain specialist. Have also taken antibiotics which help temporarily. Has anyone on here thought about a legal case? If you have spoken with a lawyer how did that go? I can't find a lawyer to take this on.

We have a local ambulance chaser in town. Just remember AMGEN is a very big corporation with lots of money and if we lose, we have to pay the attorney bills which are a lot of money. I had a case that went to mediation and he took 40% off the top and I was charged for every stamp, phone call, etc. Out of $50,000 I personally received about $23,000 so he got over 50% of it. Do you really have the resources to proceed? Wish I could get Gerry Spense out of retirement. This would be one he would personally LOVE! He hates large corporations with a passion. He's pretty close to me right now but it would take a long drive to find his ranch and then convince him to get back into the Court He may even tell me no and I'm on the best friend list. Also, my personal atty is very good but you can see from the above how he operates which is pretty normal in the USA. Let me know if you want to proceed. We are going to need a lot more than 2 of us. Pood

I'm ready if we can get enough other people. I can't bear the costs of going it alone but would join a legal case if enough people are onboard. Keep me informed here, I can't find anyone to take it on and I've spoken to several attorneys. Others haven't even called me back.

The Prolia site on AMGEN says to NOT have any jaw bone work done while on Prolia. Stop Prolia as soon as possible and then have the dead bone removed by specialists. They are called something like MaxioFacial specialists. They know all about jaws and do implants, etc. They are not just DDS's. That means that one has to wait the full 6 months to go to these specialists but perhaps a regular dentist could help some. They just don't do the big surgeries anymore. You get referred to the specialists. Apparently, a root canal, can still have a tiny bit of bacteria in it and it reverses itself. I was told to not return to my dentist until I had no more symptoms of Prolia at all which for me is the latter part of October 2015 if I'm lucky. I've ordered products to help rebuild the immune system from Amazon and also ordered very strong vitamins/minerals and a probiotic from a company I generally use for my vitamins/minerals. I don't know if I am allowed to write it's name here as that would be advertising.

Yes, I have had bone removed four times by a periodontist. Also a second opinion of my condition by an oral surgeon who agreed with the periodontist. No surgery of any kind, etc. Let me know if you find an attorney, I'm so ready.

ATTENTION TO ALL! There is a legal case re: Prolia that one can join in the USA. A lady told me and I didn't believe her but did find it online -- these are the lawyers that are looking for Prolia victims: schmidtlaw.com. You can have a free consultation with them. I have no idea how many people are on board, but it doesn't hurt at all to make a phone call and the more people, the less legal expenses for those that participate. I know this is definitely what some of you wanted so here's your chance. Obviously, they have to have a certain number of people to be looking for more. Be well~Pood

Went back to the rheumatologist that gave me the Prolia injection. First she said: What's happened to you? You are so skinny. So I was well armed with the patient letter from Amgen and a list of every adverse effect I have with Prolia. She said she knew nothing about the Patient Letter and has given out about 150 Prolia injections. She sent me down to the lab for more testing and if my CBC comes back really screwed up, she works with an Immunologist who can then Rx me something for my immune system. She said it would all be gone and back to normal after the 6th month and I replied: ANOTHER LIE!!!!! She wanted to know why Amgen didn't contact her and I told her that I told them I would talk to her. I'm calling Amgen again so they can get her properly lined out. No blood test pre-Prolia. No dentist pre-Prolia. In how many ways can she go WRONG!! I can be a real witch and she just apologized all over the place. I'm sure it was forgotten immediately after I left. I'm so sorry -- I pushed you into this so you would have successful surgeries. DUH?? Who is is stupid enough to do big joint replacement surgeries on a person with a compromised immune system. My surgeon was not the least worried about OP. He said he would just use a lot more glue.

This is incorrect. I contacted Schmidtlaw and they are not taking Prolia cases at this time.

Blood work came back. Prolia caused an autoimmune disorder. One of my immunoglobbins is very low. Going to call the FDA again. Wonder if it will go away when Prolia goes away which for me is the end of Oct. 2015 or April 2016. Hopefully.

Has anyone found an attorney to take cases other than thigh fractures due to Prolia? No one is interested in ONJ (osteonecrosis of the jaw).

Try researching the product Teriparatide,as this drug will not only increase bone density but can also help with jaw rot. It is not government subsidies and is around $500 a month. I have been on it for a month with no side effects. I think worth investigating.

Yes, I had gums splitting and osteonecrosis of the jaw with dead bone literally having to be pulled out of my gums several times over the course of a year. Finally stopped having this after about five trips to a periodontist. He gave me a mouth rinse called Peridex which I am still using to try to ward off any more problems Also took clindamycin for a week several different times which helped temporarily.

Hi Sadie~so sorry to hear you are still having Prolia problem in your mouth. We have about 5-8 threads on this site relating to Prolia so you are far from the only one. Yes, I saw that Schmidt had quit taken people. I managed to come out of Prolia in the 5th month feeling well as Amgen said I would. I think I'm one of the lucky ones -- lucky to be alive and lucky to have no lasting side effects. I know some people have had braces put on to save what teeth they have. There is always lawyers and settlement and it's just like reporting to the FDA. Tiny form to fill out and they will let you know just like FDA. I also know a guy in NC with the last name of Lamb. Also often Prolia causes fungal infections in the mouth. Lawyers seem interested in ONJ, thigh bone fractures or anyone that has had out of pocket medical expenses due to Prolia. When did you have your injection? You should be pretty well cleared up by now, hopefully; although there are some people here after 3 years that are still trying to walk and get their lives back in some way to somewhat 'normal'. Hope you are doing much better. Be well~

Terparatide does not build bone. It only stops it from getting worse. FYI: It has a long list of side effects and some last forever. Please know exactly what you are recommending. It's not like saying 'use some calcium supplements'. There are two on the market currently that do not have a long list of bad side effects and do build new healthy bone. One is Calcitonin. I'm going back on it next week. Docs don't like it as there is nothing in it for them. Stay well~

sadie~lawyers and settlements and there is also an atty in NC with the last name of Lamb that is taking or was taking Prolia victims. It's like filling out a little form for the FDA. There's a little box where you write what problems you have or had and they will contact you if interested. it seems they like ONJ, femur fractures and hospital out of pocket expenditures.

I have ONJ from Prolia and have been in terrible shape since Christmas 2017. I’ve been on IV antibiotics twice. Did you get well?

Dorrie, it sounds like you are developing the terrible side effect of Prolia, "Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ)". This literally means bone death. I have been suffering with it since November 2017. It has affected my right lower jaw and molars. I have been on many p.o. antibiotics and am now on my second round of Invanz IV antibiotics. This is because the ONJ caused osteomyelitis of the jaw (infection). Many doctors have no clue how to treat it, so if your dentist doesn't know about it, have him send you to someone who does. You need X rays and probably an MRI to determine the degree of damage to the bone. Have you noticed any "raw" places in your mouth? ONJ typically causes bone to be exposed inside the mouth.

Oh my, so sorry for you! I have been BATTLING osteonecrosis of the jaw since last Fall— the result of 5 Prolia injections. I also got osteomyelitis of the jaw from it and was on IV antibiotics for 2 months. I was off the IV for only 2 weeks when the severe pain started back. Right now I’m on p.o. Clindamycin and lots of ibuprofen. This is a very, very bad side effect. Do NOT let a doctor do any surgery as you run the risk of your mouth never, ever healing.

Please do not ever take this poison drug again. I have lost all of my top teeth and still going through very expensive implants. Seems like this nightmare will ever be over.

My wife had 3 doses of prolia. We stopped the 4th dose when she developed a tooth abscess and loose teeth. Her doctor said it was not related. We would join a legal case for compensation and to have the drug removed until the cause has been investigated as to why it happens...

I am having a horrible effect from prolia injections. I found out yesterday that a bone in my right hand has separated from the other four bones, my right hand and wrist swollen and very painful, had ex rays taken yesterday to show this.

Can't use my right hand, also teeth infection, had to have all bottom teeth removed. If anyone knows of a way to get something started against this really BAD drug please post it.
