Talwin-pentazocine/naloxone

Updated

My pharmacist notified me that the above med is no longer made. Can I get it by any other name or how can I contact the manufacturer to see if it will be made again? After trying many meds over 10 years it is the only one that works for my wife. Please help. thank you

My pharmacist told me the same thing here in Michigan about 5 days ago....I called 17 local pharmacies and found (1) that had 150 tablets left and I was able to get them. I was told a couple different things: 1. The drug company was going through a major re-organization and there was a backorder, and 2. The drug is on indefinite hiatus. Either way, it will be very bad for me as well. I'm very intolerant to MANY pain relievers and this medication has worked for me for over 10 years with NO side effects. I was wondering if this medication could be "made" through a compounding pharmacy? Would anyone happen to know that as well? My best advice is to call as many pharmacies as you can to see if they have anything left.

Same thing here. Have been taking TALECEN since 1993 following a multi-trauma accident. Only med I could tolerate. But MY pharmacist told me he couldn't dispense any leftovers, with an Rx of course, because it would be illegal (I'm in Maryland) Not happy. Within a week I've had to start using a cane to walk.

Same for us in Virginia. I've been using it for four years, same dosage, still effective. It's very frustrating. My pharmacist said it is on a manufacturer's back-order and it will be the end of March or beginning of April before it is available again. Aside from some minor side effects in the beginning, I was so pleased and grateful to be able to have the pain relief without having that woozy feeling. In short I am able to function while taking it. Can anyone recommend a comparable substitute?

This is good in the treatment of pain because it prevents addiction by preventing misuse.

I've been using pentazocine for thirty years for back pain. Only drug that works. How do I continue to get access to it. No pharmacies can fill my prescription.

Exactly my experience. My mother has been on Talwin for at least ten years for severe arthritis and nothing comes close to the comfort she gets from this medication. Suddenly it's off the market. The doctor has prescribed other meds such as Tylenol 3, but they cause awful constipation. The doctor warns that Talwin causes stomach bleeding, but taken with a stomach medication, in ten years she's never had a problem. I truly hope this medication makes a comeback!

It's probably not making enough money for the pharma companies, hence they've either cancelled it altogether or reduced its availability. Most docs haven't even heard of this stuff since it's fallen out in favor of hydro and codeine. It's a shame because I really want to try it out for the sole novelty of it.

I urge anyone that needs this med to look into trying Kratom. It binds to opioid receptors in a similar fashion as this med. It's nothing compared to Vicodin or Percocet of course, but if you get decent pain relief off the weak Talwin then this may suit you. Either that or be stuck with Tramadol. Yuck.

Re: Renegade (# 10) Expand Referenced Message

I have used USA Talwin 1978 until 1982, the original pure pentazocine tablets.

I did return to using once outstanding Eastern Europe pentazocine, in the year 2008 until the end of the year 2011, in 50 mg tabs marketing name was "Fortral" and mfg was Krka of Slovenia. Krka withdrew the tabs I assume due to either low demand, or recreational abuse, or from pressure from the World Heath Organization in a conference in the year 2003 Austria. Both Pentazocine in tablets form was reclassified into a much tighter restriction and MD's were "discouraged" to prescribe this IMHO excellent substitute for Codeine or dihydrocodeine! This same Vienna conference started a campaign that eventually caused the worldwide banning of once the household name of USA Darvon, and Darvocet N50 and N100 by the end of the year 2012 !!! (propoxyphene) in any form, known in other countries as Doloxene, Depronal, Distalgesic, perhaps in as many as 16 countries outside of the USA between October of 2008 thru February of 2014!

Back to "pentazocine in its pure form as was established by Winthrop Pharma in the USA at least since the year around 1967 in liquid form, later in pure tabs of 50 mg that were immensely popular in dentistry and urology in the 1970's!

The last manufacturer I am aware of was Sanofi, who were phasing out the tabs of their marketing versions of worldwide Pentazocine HCI, in pure form, known as Talwin PX in Canada. My sources in Canada told me, it was restricted in Canada
to only hospitals; and, was being withdrawn during the year 2016 from most pharmacies in Canada in tablet form !!! (as Sanofi Talwin PX) without naloxone.

The only country I am aware of that still had pure Pentazocine, in tablet form, and, that was in the year 2016, in regular pharmacies, was in Greece mfg was IFET.

The only country left in 2016 again for tablet form of "pure pentazocine without any naloxone" was a small generic pharma firm for citizens of the United Kingdom, and, that is all the good news I can report.

More countries are "now releasing the example set in USA in the year 1983, such as Spain as Sosegon, but, in the present day it only comes in tabs in not the pure form but with the added Naloxone. Japan has also, removed the restrictions on tablets of Pentazocine, but it is only manufactured for citizens of Japan in tabs with the combo of pentazocine with Naloxone in tablet form.

The strange thing is that over fifty countries including the USA, still stock the pure liquid vials of Pentazocine Lactate, only practical for IM or IV inj. only, and, it is very widely available in 2017 that way including many 3rd world countries, not in the prestige MARTINDALE, which list brand name proprietary protected ethical pharma products in 43 countries in the modern industrialized world with over 4,000 pages of drug info for pharmacists and med professionals worldwide!
