Taking Subutex And Percocet Together (Page 3)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

My doctor just put me on subutex along with percocet. I've been on percocet for yrs for severe and chronic migraines. He told me to take the subutex and if it doesn't work to take a percocet. I usually take 15 mg percocet at a time. I've read some stuff online that worries me. Some people say if you take percs with subutex you'll go into withdrawals. I went through severe withdrawals with fioricet months ago and I don't want to go through that hell again. I took my first subutex about an hour ago and I still have a migraine so I want to take a perc now. Can I do that or will I get sick?

I know for a fact if you take suboxone after taking any opioid you will feel like you are going to die. Trust me. You need to wait till about 24 hrs after your last opioid or you will be sorry. You need to be already withdrawing pretty good before taking subs. I have been taking subs for 10 years. I started with subutex then went to suboxone. When I ran out of pain meds (fentanyl, percocet, oxycodone) I would take a sub and it would be about 10 hrs after pain meds and I still would start sweating, shaking and contemplate suicide, that's how bad you feel. That's why your sub Dr tells you to be already withdrawing for about 24 hrs before starting the first morning of inductions at their office. It's because the buprenorphine has higher receptor attachment and strips any opioid and it's like being raw until your body accepts the new antagonist; it's called precipitated withdrawal and is 10 times worse than a regular withdrawal. That is the truth from someone who has been there.

Took a 2mg subutex at 4 pm yesterday and it is now 8 am. Is it safe to take a percocet 10 mg?

Wow!!

I think this would work better for everyone that's on medication. Do what you're supposed to do. Do what your doctor tells you to do and move on with life. Then you won't have to worry about "will I get sick, will I not get sick" when I take a Percocet. What will or won't happen. I take my medication like I'm supposed to. Maybe you should try it, it's not so bad.

Good health to you.

From experience, Don’t take the Percocet until at least 12 hrs or you will go into precipitated withdrawals! I tried taking subutex on the same day that I had been taking my prescription morphine and it made me feel like crap! Good luck and God Bless!

Re: Mr clean (# 575) Expand Referenced Message

I will settle it for you. I posted below as I work as a nurse in a pain clinic at Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston. We have a patient on 6mg of subutex but she takes it 3 times a day for pain. Today she came in as sick as a dog; sweat dripping off her face, twitching and shaking. We asked her what happened she said she took her 6am 2mg dose of subutex and was fine. But at 10am she had horrific pain (she has a bad nerve disorder) so she tried taking a 2 perks at 10am for the pain. (It was from an old script before she switched to subs) she said the perks did very little but she was desperate. She knew it was wrong to take but she planned on telling the doctor because apparently she's been having a very bad week. Anyway, she then continued and took her next dose of subs at noon and she said by 12:20 she was drenched in sweat and started shaking. She didn't think she would make the appointment at 1. She was so sick. The doctor told her she never should have taken the subutex so soon after the perk. He was also angry since she was no longer prescribed it. He told her not to do it again or she would get in trouble. But he did tell her that when she took the perk at 9am or whatnot, then she should have waited at least 12 hours before taking her next dose of subutex. So yes you can take them but you have to wait 12 hours after taking an opiate to start taking the subs again or you will be very sick like this patient today.

Like I said... So many people posting incorrect information but are too stubborn to believe anything different. Go ahead and take subutex after percs. Then please settle this by letting everyone know you didnt go into WDs or nothing else dramatic happened.

Your doctor is wrong...it is absolutely absurd to be on both medication. Subutex will fill your opioids receptors and there will be no where for the Percocet to attach itself. What I don't understand is why are you taking subutex if your going to continue to use opioids.

I've been on Subutex for almost 10 years at 16 mg. I had surgery and came off the Subutex a day before. The doctor only prescribed me perk fives and I've been on them for almost 5 days. The Percocet or not satisfying my withdrawals do I need to wait to take my Subutex

Re: My name is none of your business (# 552) Expand Referenced Message

You are so wrong!! Like the above posters said, it is the BUPE not the naloxone that causes precipitated withdrawals. I work at a pain clinic at Brigham and women's hospital and we get this question ALL THE TIME. Buprenorphine is very sticky to the receptors and if you take say Percocet after either suboxone or subutex you will be fine. The problem comes if you then try to take the subutex or suboxone AFTER taking the perks. Since bupe has such a high affinity for the receptors, if you take a perk and then take bupe after, it will kick ALL of the perks out of your receptors (because AGAIN the subs have a super strong affinity to go in the receptors) and you will be thrown into horrible withdrawal. Trust me I have seen it in patients that didn't listen and decided to take a pain pill and they were very unhappy campers. Precipitated withdrawals can last for a good amount of time (probably feels like forever). But people need to stop posting false information!! Subutex/suboxone are both made of bupe and that is the blocker. If you are on a low dose, say 2mg and you take a pain pill you will get some relief but not a ton. So please people just know that bupe is the problem when it comes to precipitated withdrawals. I have only seen one person be able to take subutex 4 hours after taking dilaudid and she did not experience the withdrawals. The reason, my clinic believes? Is because this person is a rapid metabolizer of opiates. The head doctor put her on methadone and after 2 weeks she started burning through it so fast that she would go into withdrawal 5 hours after her dose, and she took it 4 times a day. By the 3rd week she was in a constant state of withdrawal bc the methadone was being burned so fast. To confirm this "belief" the doctor did a special genetic evaluation on her to see if she was a rapid metabolizer and she was. But that is the only time we have seen someone not experience withdrawals. It's because she has an excess of an enzyme in her body that is responsible for metabolizing methadone.

Re: Nuna (# 556) Expand Referenced Message

Yes you are correct. You can take Percocet if needed for pain on top of suboxone or subutex. But it will only help the pain better. But I'm a recovering addict and I take my program serious. I'm on 60 suboxone and 30 subutex a month. 3 a day. Which is alot better cause I got my life back. Was taking 30 to 40 opiates a day. But I've had kidney stones and had to take a Percocet a couple Times

Re: Pinky33 (# 565) Expand Referenced Message

You are wrong when you say that Suboxone "has the blocker" and that Subutex does not. The Buprenorphine ITSELF is a "blocker". Bupe is a partial opioid AGONIST, partial ANTAGONIST. The ANTAGONIST part acts as what you are calling a "blocker". In fact, the Naloxone in Suboxone is only there to keep people from injecting it. When taken sublingually (under the tongue) Naloxone is only around 5% bioavailable. So when taken properly, it is really only the Bupe that is doing any "blocking". The Naloxone virtually does nothing unless it's injected. People who think you can use full agonist opioids side by side with Subutex, because they mistakenly think the Subs contain "no blocker" could be in for a rude awakening. Precipitated withdrawals are from HELL!!!

Hi~
To me that is strange your doctor put you on that combination. Because my son is on the same medicine minus the Percocet. She told him if you take Percocet or any other narcotic you will just pee it out. It will do nothing absolutely nothing. Good luck.

Just FYI... The primary difference between SuboxoneandSubutexis that one of these medications also contains a substance called “naloxone”, while the other one does not: Subutex contains a single active ingredient: buprenorphine.Suboxone contains two active ingredients: buprenorphine and naloxone. Because buprenorphine is the active ingredient inSubutex, the medication can achieve this effect. However, Subutexis not meant to be used like a naloxone inj. or anopiateblocker in most instances. It is, for the most part, used "for the treatment of opioid dependence" (FDA).

Re: Jackhammer (# 12) Expand Referenced Message

No blocker in subutex. Suboxone has the blocker. Not subutex. You can feel opiates still just not full effects and it may make you slightly sick. Headache & naseated
