Taking Subutex And Percocet Together (Page 22)

Updated

My doctor just put me on subutex along with percocet. I've been on percocet for yrs for severe and chronic migraines. He told me to take the subutex and if it doesn't work to take a percocet. I usually take 15 mg percocet at a time. I've read some stuff online that worries me. Some people say if you take percs with subutex you'll go into withdrawals. I went through severe withdrawals with fioricet months ago and I don't want to go through that hell again. I took my first subutex about an hour ago and I still have a migraine so I want to take a perc now. Can I do that or will I get sick?

LOU LOU: Anyone who is routinely taking full-agonist opioids such as Percocet or Vicodin, together with a "blocker" like Subutex/Suboxone, would either have to be taking a pretty darn low dose of both, or taking the Subs and then the Percs AFTERWARDS in order to not "get sick". The whole point of Subs is to fill in your opioid receptors so that you are not in withdrawal, and so that you don't feel high from full-agonist opioids. So taking the two together is pretty counter-productive unless you are on a pretty low dose of both.

If you want to stop taking the painkillers and get back on Subs, I would stop taking the painkillers, wait until you start feeling withdrawals, and then take the Subs. If you take the Subs too soon after taking the painkillers, you can and will go into withdrawals. If you are still "feeling" the painkillers, and you take the Subs, you could be in trouble. There is no way around it; you really need those painkillers to go out of your system before starting the Subs again. Now, most tablet opioid painkillers are fairly short-acting, so it's not like with say, Methadone, which takes FOREVER to get out of your system. You literally have to wait at least 48 hours before starting Subs after Methadone. BUT, once you start the Subs, you should feel relief fairly quickly. May I ask what painkillers you are taking, and how much? Also, how much Subutex are you planning on taking?

No you will not go in to precipitated withdrawals if taking subutex and percocet.

TASHA: That is an incorrect statement. You MAY NOT go into Precips, IF you are taking a fairly low dose of both, and IF you only take the Percs AFTER taking the Subs, not the other way around. It is SCIENCE, these are FACTS. Stating that you will absolutely, in no way, go into Precips taking those two things together in any way, is just plain WRONG. You take a couple of Percs, and then do 16mgs, maybe 20mgs of Bupe? You WILL be in for something that you don't want. You are giving bad advice.

TASHA: May I ask what dosage of both that you are on? And this really isn't an "everybody's different" situation. This is what the drug is SUPPOSED to do.

Yes, Subs are made to get you off of full-agonist opioids like Percs, Roxys, etc. Not made to be MIXED with those things.

Wrong. The bupenorphine in either has THE strongest affinity for all three receptors. The naloxone is to prevent mainlining mostly. Yes naloxone/narcan IS what they give OD patients to bring them back. Trust me. If you take subutex after ANY narcotic analgesic you WILL never do it again. I promise.

If you are already taking sub then there should be NO reason what so ever unless you're trying to feel high that you would need another pain killer. I would ask your doctor for valium for any neck pain to help relax the muscles. I have three children that I gave birth to naturally without any pain killers or anything. Your body is not used to feeling any pain since your on that medication so giving birth since yes it is painful is going to seem worse than it really is because you've been numbing yourself. 12 years ago I was addicted to opiates and was put on suboxone so I can relate to NOT feeling any pain so that even the littlest word feels horrible. Again I suggest speaking with your doctor about going on something like valium and also since your pregnant your child is now already addicted to the subutex. I know that's the standard for pregnant women however it has changed the last few years because of the sad withdrawals the babies are going through. Please please please speak with your doctor. In fact I would even maybe start seeking out advice from another doctor.

SLANT: Don't bother. Everything you just wrote? I have told them all this until I can't take it anymore. There are some on here that are just NOT going to believe you. When I hear someone say, yet again, that "as long as there is no Naloxone in it, you are fine", I just want to scream. Some of these people are just going to have to find out for themselves. And no, you DON'T want to find this out. I have personally been through it, and I was seriously contemplating jumping off of the roof. I thought I had been through bad withdrawals.....NOPE. Those Precips? Are no friggin JOKE!.

Your info is completely WRONG; Buprenorphine is a semisynthetic opioid derivative of thebaine. It is a mixed partial agonist opioid receptor modulator ...it is Suboxone. It will knock Percocet off the receptors and put you into precipitated withdrawal's if you take the Percocet's first and then take that but if you take that first and follow it up like an hour later with Percocet that will not happen and as far as your claim about Oxymorphone it is not new it's called Opana and has been around for a very long time.

CRYSTAL: Valium is neither a painkiller, nor is it a muscle relaxer. Valium is a Benzodiazepine, which is a tranquilizer/anti-anxiety medication. It would NOT be prescribed for pain or muscle spasms.

GARY: It doesn't matter how many times you tell this to some people, they will INSIST that you can take full-agonist opioids, and then take Subutex and be perfectly fine. Already been there with these people, MANY times over. This woman on here, "Anna"? Wrote a whole PARAGRAPH of bad information, stating it as if it were the gospel. It's one thing to not know what you are putting into your OWN body, but to come on a forum like this and dispense just plain WRONG information to others when you don't have a clue is ridiculous.

RJ: Both things you took are in pretty small amounts, so you may be ok. Or you may not....what DID happen? You tell us? In the future, it is not recommended that a person take Bupe that close to a full-agonist opioid. This can throw you into Precipitated withdrawals, which are basically the 3rd circle of Hell. Not sure why you would WANT to take Bupe so close to an opioid, but that's your business I suppose. But it's not only counterproductive, its just plain not very smart. Look at it this way; you are taking an opioid, and then following up the opioid with an opioid BLOCKER....what is the logic in that?

Exactly. Someone i know takes oxy then will take subutex right after. Or mix em together on occasion. No precipitated withdrawals. That's caused from naloxone which is in subxone not subutex. Don't post misguided or uninformed health information on the internet. You could kill somebody because your "opinion" is wrong.. not directed at anyone specific but damn know your s*** or keep it to yourself. Me and this person seem to be the only ones with true knowledge in the field.

Subutex is buorenorphine which is a partial-agonist opioid. It is NOT an opioid blocker. You are the one giving false information. Opioid blockers are in suboxone which is buprenorphine and naloxone. Naloxone is a reversal/blocker at the mu opioid receptors. They actually give buprenorphine in the U.K. As an analgesic (thebaine) it works very well. Everyone is different and everyone's body is different. But to just flat out state that subutex is an opioid blocker is false information.

I'm just curious how you got all your information. You claim to know everything about these drugs, are you a drug rep for suboxone? Are you a pharmacist, or pharmD? Or are you just commenting on things you've heard your buddy's say

Your wrong I'm sad to say. Buprenorphine is NOT a "blocker" of any kind. It is in fact a partial opioid agonist. That means it sits very well on the mu receptors so much so that if any other pain meds come along they just float by because your body is sated with the buprenorphine. The full agonist opioid pain meds can attach to other receptors but the only receptor that makes you feel euphoric is the mu receptor, that's why people say pain pills don't work when on subutex. Now as for he "blocker" the only opioid antagonist is naloxone/narcan if given intravenously it will strip whatever opioid whether it be a full acting or partial acting opioid out of the receptor hence the precipitated withdrawal. So in conclusion you cannot say that buprenorphine is an opioid blocker. That is an untrue statement. I am a pharmD and I myself have been on subutex for years for chronic pain from a car accident and I had to have surgery while on subutex.
