Suboxone And Pre Employment Drug Screen (Page 4)

Updated

I am prescribed suboxone for an opiate addiction maintenance program. First, will it show up in a ten panel test? Second, can an employer discriminate if they have already offered me the job? Third, is this violating any privacy laws?

Its a special test to test for suboxone. Most employer don't test for it but a few do. Whoever said that it will show up on a drug screen is totally wrong. It does not show up as an opiate and takes a more extensive and expensive test to test for it hence the reason a lot of employers do not include it in there drug screening. There are a few that do though but not in general.

I am currently sitting and waiting to take a pre-employment ten panel drug screen and physical. Can anyone tell me for sure if I would test positive bupenorphine (suboxone)? As stated in an early psst, most of the replies on this forum are of people bi@$#ing about grammar, and the lack of knowing. I thought this forum was to help people get factual information that would help them. Thanks to anyone who can help me.

I've have 6 drug test since I've been on suboxone for the past 6 months. It doesn't come up on a normal employment ten panel drug screen. It has to be a special test to show that it's in your system. The only time it was detected was when I was in rehab and they did random test ( every week really) for 6 months. So get your facts straight

So, I'm a "recovering" heroine addict (I say "recovering", because you're never a recovered addict) of 5 years. Started when I was 18, I'm not 25 and 2 years off the crap. I quit cold turkey, but had a scare and scrambled to find some subs. I tried a suboxone doctor before, when I was about 20, but the guy made me cry when I was at an extremely vulnerable state.

Anyways, so I've been back on subs for about a year now. I take about 1mg a day. I drink a looooot of water, and nothing else. I've been judged, and ridiculed for being on suboxone. But it beats having a bad day and having a weak moment.

So now I've come across this job. It's 10 an hour, versus 7.50 an hour (I live in Alabama, where everyone is in poverty). Come to find out, they give a pre-employment drug test. Woo. I start before then, due to their lack of workers... and I'd probably be fine simply coming off of it, if it wasn't for my chronic pain due to a severe (and chronic) stomach infection I aquire several years ago... on top of being a paranoid schizophrenic. For me, suboxone is a mood stabilizer as well as a pain reducer. I'm still debating on whether or not I'll stop taking it for the test, or risk it. From what I've seen, bup only shows up on a 14 panel test. Neither the 10 nor 12 panel appear to test for it. I guess we will just have to see. I will let everyone know if I can't handle the pain and have to take it, and what my results are.
Everyone light a candle for me. Or pray, whatever.

Also, I really hate all the judgemental asshats on these types of websites. Maaaaan, some people just love to talk.

Only the 14 panel tests, as far as I can tell. Bup does not show up on any of the lists of drugs tested for on 12 panel or lower. However, there have been reports of being false positives, showing up at oxycontin. But I think that is few and far between.
I went and took my pre-employment drug screening yesterday morning. It was unexpected, so I didn't have time to (or decide to) stop taking my subs. My employer told me to go take the test, and then come back to work my first shift on Monday at 8:30. I still have not heard anything back, so no news is good news at this rate.
I don't understand why employers would test for Suboxone. Unless, of course, the employee gives a reason to be tested (drifting/dosing off, being clumsy repetitively, etc)... but for pre-employment I would not see a reason for it.

But to answer your question; no, a 12 panel drug test should not test for Bup/sub.

When I was pregnant I was taking subutex.... my doctor knew about it, my OB knew about it and everyone was okay with it. throughout my pregnancy I drastically reduced the dose so that by the time I actually had my son I was taking a half of a two milligram per day. my doctors were amazing throughout my pregnancy. flash forward to delivery time. My doctor induced me because she didn't want to have me go over my due date due to my medications. Note at the time I was only on subutex, period! after I had my son they had to do a c-section... my nurse took it upon herself to decide that I did not need any type of pain medication even as my stomach was entirely cut open and I was walking to the nicu every two hours for five days. my doctor who knew me very well prescribed them to me however my nurse took it upon herself not to tell me that I could have them so therefore I was walking to the NICU having taken just motrin. the nurses were literally talking about me outside of my hospital room telling each other that I was a heroin addict and that my son should be taken from me.... which I have never done in my life. In the NICU they had me so terrified that there was something wrong with my baby and as being a first time mother I didn't know any better. they told me there was something wrong with my baby because he did not sleep 3 hours straight as a breastfed baby. breastfed babies are lucky if they sleep an hour and a half to two hours at a time. However as a new mother I didn't know this and therefore was freaking out. cut forward to discharge from the hospital. took him to the pediatrician they tell me that he is perfect... totally healthy baby, no signs of withdrawal from anything and that I have absolutely nothing to worry about. They were appalled that I was treated the way. I was in the hospital and made to believe there is something wrong with my newborn baby. it was so bad that my mom who was a RN at the hospital where I had my baby went to the head of the Nursing Board and reported the hospital for the way that I was treated. All because I disclosed the medication that I was prescribed by my doctor. they had child services in my room about 6 times. They did three separate drug test on me and my son to which came up negative for everything. they actually wrote on his discharge paperwork that mom had a history of heroin which was a full out lie. and good luck trying to change a hospital record that is now on my son's permanent record at that hospital. I did what I was supposed to do. When I found out I was pregnant everything stopped. he to this day is my world and has totally changed my life for the better. I am an amazing mom and do everything for my son but I was treated like a bottom gutter junkie. And yet my doctors who knew me stuck up for me but the nurse is still made their own opinion. To this day it just pisses me off to no end that a person takes the steps to get clean, acknowledges that they have a problem and seeks out the help that they need.... and is treated like a piece of s*** because they are honest about their addiction!!!! hell a real heroin junkie could stop doing it 3 days before delivery and it probably wouldn't even show up.... Pisses me off. As to the drug testing, it did not show up positive for anything on the NUMEROUS drug tests they ran on me and my son. Now granted I was taking a very small dose... Hope this helps. To everyone who is taking a suboxone for the right reasons.... keep doing what you're doing and walking the right path to get better. Don't beat yourself up for a slip up, just take each day one at a time!!!

My sis in law went thru the same thing. She wasn't prescribed suboxone. They drug tested her after giving birth & children services stepped in & she had to wait a week to bring her son home & they did home visits until it was out of her system. When people tell you that they dont test for it bulls***, yes they do & csb will take your child. Hope this helps. Good luck

Suboxone contains a synthetic opiate (buprenorphine) and will NOT show up on a drug test as opiates. There is however a special test for buprenorphine, although in most cases it is rarely used. You should have seen a suboxone or methadone doctor Immediately when you found out you were pregnant! I don't remember if you said you were buying suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone) or if you said subutex (just buprenorphine), because the naloxone can be harmful to the fetus and pregnant women should only take subutex. Also the doctors at the hospital should have been aware of your medications as to prevent complications in the baby from detox.

Someone close, not me, takes Suboxone for many years now. 10? Terrified to come off of it. Attended and finished a 4 year degree in sciences, then went to RN school. She claims she cannot find a job as a nurse in a medium size city 2 multiple hospitals and numerous specialty clinics. I THINK it's fear of actually getting detected as a Suboxone patient with a pre-employment drug screen. She goes after low paying jobs with desperate employers needing help that she believes do not drug test. One however, sent her to Quest for a screen. A swab inside her cheek. Been over a week for results. Anyone know what's tested with that? We are all at out wits end over the financial tragedy of an educated person who, for some reason, can't get a job to make ends meet. Thank You people.
