Spironolactone Shelf Life

What is the shelf life of Spironolactone 50mg? I have two unopened bottles dated 12/10/10. I was taken off in 2010, and put back on it recently. I would like to use them but fear poisoning. Is it safe to digest?

This medication doesn't get dangerous, once past it's expiration date, but it does start to lose effectiveness and may not work as well as it did, when new.

If they are in the original factory sealed bottle, they are generally good for 3 to 4 years, but once in a pharmacy dispensing bottle, where they have been exposed to the elements that cause degradation, they expire one year from the date of dispensing. If they are that old, it would most likely be best to just dispose of them and pick up a new supply.

This medication is a potassium sparing diuretic that may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, heartburn, elevated potassium levels and frequent urination.

Hi Mitza...this medication is designed for the aid of relieving fluid retention, as in ascites (fluid buildup in the abdomen) and or edema (fluid retention in the lower extremities).
