Spiractin
UpdatedI have a terrible problem of retaining fluid during the day where to the point I can gain 5 kg as I only urinate once or twice after consuming at least 2 1/2 litre of water per day. My doctor prescribed me spiractin and frusemide at different times, he didnt tell me to take them concurrently, so I was wondering if it I could take these both during the day for the duiretic needs to stop from gaining so much fluid weight during the day without causing any side effects. My potassium levels are fine but my kidneys have slowed a bit owing to age. As I have lost a total weight of 80kg over the past two years and have worked hard to maintain it, I am a bit reticent to stop taking these tablets as I do not want to gain any of the weight I have lost. I attended a vascular surgeon to see if an operation would rectify the situation, but he just wants me to wear compression stockings, which are very ugly not to mention extremely hot during the australian summer. Any advice would be greatly received.

Hello, Rosie! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you're having.
Are your blood pressure levels normal? Sometimes elevated blood pressure can cause fluid retention like that. Do you watch how much sodium you eat daily? High amounts of salt can also contribute to the problem.
As to the medications, no, it isn't safe to double up, unless your doctor has specifically told you to do so. Since they both remove fluid from the body, you could actually end up removing too much, which could result in dehydration. They are also both pretty rough on the kidneys, so you could end up causing kidney damage or failure.
If your doctor has advised you to, then you really should wear the compression stockings, they can be greatly beneficial in cases like yours.
