Smoking Oxycodone

Updated

My baby sister is addicted to oxycodone. She started using oxycontin when she was 15, she is now 25 and has moved on to smoking oxycodone, morphine, and even the jelly off of phentanyl patches. She has been (as she puts it) a "slave" to this stuff for 10 yrs now. She assures me that overdose is impossible when you smoke it, is this true? Most importantly, how do I save her?

I'm very sorry about your situation. First question I have is, does your sister actually want to quit? Because if she doesn't want to it is impossible to make her stop. I am currently going through the same. Except I am the addict. I smoke or snort them. I have been going to a methadone clinic for a year now. But, I still continue to fall off the wagon. Finally I decided to stop wasting my time and to stop hurting myself and family. I am going to check myself into an impatient rehab. I live in southern California. I can't afford a high end rehab. So, I am going to a cheap rehab, that has the basic human needs and medical staff. I hope this was a little helpful. As far as the possibility of overdose from smoking them is always there. I'm sorry for being blunt. Don't give up on your sister. My prayers go out to you and family. Keep faith.

Thank for your advice and prayers. and to answer your question yes she does want to get clean. We can't afford a fancy rehab either. We live in Northern California. Do you have any suggestions to where to find the cheapest help? And again, thank you.

I am deeply sorry for your situation. It is true that unless the person wants to quit, and put the work in( cause there's a lot to it!) then it is utterly impossible. My wife has been addicted for 6 years on Oxycodone 30 mg instant release and just started smoking it for the last 2 years. Sometimes a person goes through a significant trauma or change that they can't handle so they try a new way to make it through, or, chronic pain can become so frustrating to the person, that they see no other option then to try a different way to take there meds. I have begged, pleaded and often threatened to leave her, but negative reinforcement doesn't always work on addicts. Until the person sees its affecting there loved ones and their daily lives, cause its pretty obvious when someone on the drug, they won't see it as anything but their problem. They have to hit bottom and see that their actions have long term, serious consequences or the opiate cloud they're in won't clear. Going to the persons doctor and ratting on them doesn't always help either, because they cant let the patient go through withdrawal which is the most dangerous part of the healing process. They have to taper down, and be honest when the urge comes. I hope all of these people that are dealing with this horrible drug realize that they are just lost, bored or emotionally devastated. Yes some do need it for the pain, but the meds are often designed to cause the person to become addicted, even if take correctly. With all of the money the pharmaceutical companies make off of our suffering and the money the doctors make for prescribing any opiate I sadly don't see a change coming soon unless they schedule 1 the instant release ones, like the government did with Quaaludes, and make it so the person cant feel high, just get the pain relief. But really the fact is its supply and demand and the more people that get addicted the more money those pharmaceutical companies make. The people that are going through this think they cant live without it but its all in their head! Lets admit this fact, sometimes life sucks and an escape is not an insane response, and feeling high makes all of that go away for a while. People need to deal with the pain and think about who they are hurting and where their lives will go on the path they have chosen. Its not a way to live, its a way to die! Best of luck to all, and don't give up on your loved ones, because it take a lot of consistent support to make it out of this cycle! Good luck and be tough!
