Safety Of Dilantin 100mg Caps Sulfameth Trimethoprim 800 160 Tabs Interaction

Had 3 UTIs this year. Urologist suggested this med be taken daily for a year. I also have epilepsy and take topomax, dilantin, and climazapan. i think it is a terrible idea. What think you?

The Sulfamethoxazole in the antibiotic can increase the effect of your Dilantin, which does create a risk of it reaching toxic levels.

Why did he pick that antibiotic? It's actually not the one that's usually used for this, the one regularly used for a period of time as a daily UTI preventative is Nitrofurantoin, which isn't listed as having any interactions with your medications.

I don't know why he chose this rx. I ran this by my neurologist (as I always do), and he wanted me to have lab work done after two weeks and then see him when results are in. When my Neurologist wanted blood work, and then to see me I became a little frightened. Soooooo, I have not taken it. I have seen my General Practitioner. We talked about this. We just decided that if I get another UTI, she will prescribe an anti-biotic instead of me taking it on a daily basis for a year. Do you think I am doing the best thing? I take 600mg of Topomax daily and 600 Dilantin and 25 Climazpan. I just don't want to become a walking toxic dump.
