Roxi Vs Oxycontin

Updated

I take 160mill of oxycotin 2 times a day and roxi 30 mill every 3 hours for breakthrough pain. What is the difference in the meds? Also I have the generic oxycontin, 80 mill is it different than the brand name? I ask because they dont seem to effect me like the oxys I recived in the hosbital. The generic pill is lite green and oval is this the same ?

Does the so called generic oxycontin say oc on one side and 80 on the other? The name brand are lite green with those letters and numbers. The generic form should work just the same. Perhaps you are just working up a tolerance to them. Roxi's are oxycodone just like the oxycontin is; however, the oxcycontin are time-released over an 8 or 12 hour period, (depending on what you are on.) The roxicet is the same as percocet. I dont know what milligram you are on 5mg or 10mg, but no matter which one you are on they are ingested and then the medication is released usually within 15-20 minutes instead of being time released over 8-12 hours. I hope this answers your question.

I just wanted to add, that the FDA does allow the bioequivelence of generic drugs to differ by as much as plus or minus 20% from their name brand counterparts. And this is in the information pages from the FDA's own site, many people have not known this or believed me until I pointed it out to them.

Anyway, many companies are concerned about the quality of their products and their customers, but some are only interested in their bottom line and quality control suffers. I, myself, have gotten generic pills were in the same bottle I had some that worked fine, some that didn't work at all and some that were hyper-potent and made me ill as if I had od'd, even though I had only taken one.

Quality control problems of not making sure all their meds had the necessary amount of the active ingredient and people began to have serious problems when relying on their meds for health issues. So it is possible to get a bad batch of pills on some occasions that might not have the same effectiveness as different ones you had before, or the ones you were given in the hospital. Able labs went out of business entirely over this, and quite a few other companies have been sanctioned or warned over similar issues.

Anyway, here's an article I found on the subject that also lists the relevant law under the FDA that lets that 20% difference happen:

In a lot of meds, this difference of 20% + or - would not make a big difference, but for some people with pain control issues or life threatening health problems, the results can be disastrous, and unfortunately the FDA is not in any hurry to change their minds about this and require stricter requirments for the amounts of the active ingredients.

The inactive ingredients, the binders and fillers, that are used to hold a pill together in its form, can also have an effect on some people and how well the drugs work for them. They are supposed to inert, non-acting ingredients, but not everything can ever be inert for every person out there.

I know I was taking generic glucophage XR at one time and they warn you that you will find the coating of the pill when you have a bowel movement. Well, this was true but I found that my sugar was not going down and that it looked like not only the shell was being dispelled but the whole pill. The doctor and a pharmacist said I was crazy. Well, I finally decided to do the gross thing and retrieve it and examine it for myself. Sure enough....all the medication was still inside of it. I brought it to the doctor and the pharmacist. They didn't know what to say. I tell this story because it is true that everyone's body processes materials from the pills differently. Many people probably have no problem with the generic glucophage XR, but I wonder how many out there are not really absorbing their medication.

I am not surprised, my husband has the same thing with the generic that the pharmacy we used to use would dispense.

There are so many factors that can affect how a pill works for someone, and this is all on top of possible quality control problems at some questionable companies.

Did the 80mg Oxycontin used to be purple or have they always been green because i know that about 2 years ago I was getting the 80's and they were purple and not green. If anyone can give me an answer on this I would really like to know?

I wish people would stop making claim that generic should work just the same when that is not at all true and in hind sight many suffer because of this. If you don't know for a fact about something, then don't make claims you can't support. According to FDA approval regulations, generic formulas can differ in the amount of each ingredient quite a large percentage that can change the effectiveness of the medication from one person to the next. I for one know this fact first hand where by the difference caused a domino effect in health failure for me putting me in the hospital days.
