The pill which you are describing is Hydroxyzine 50 mg, manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals. It is used primarily as an antihistamine for the treatment of itches and irritations, an antiemetic for the reduction of nausea, as a weak analgesic by itself and as an opioid potentiator, and as an anxiolytic for the treatment of anxiety.

The person who said it's for itching is wrong..it's used to help anxiety n insomnia..it's gives a "high" reaction like Xanax,but not as strong..but if taken right it really can help anxiety n insomnia..

Actually it an be prescribed for itching because the itching may be stemmed from stress. So an anti-anxiety drug is what you need to stop the release of the stress hormones.

Why is this medication prescribed?
Hydroxyzine is used to relieve the itching caused by allergies and to control the nausea and vomiting caused by various conditions, including motion sickness. It is also used for anxiety and to treat the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
How should this medicine be used?
Hydroxyzine comes as capsules, tablets, a syrup, and suspension to take by mouth. It usually is taken three or four times a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take hydroxyzine exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Shake the suspension (Vistaril®) well before each use to mix the medication evenly.
Do not give this medication to children less than 12 years of age unless a doctor directs you to do so.

Atarax's primary use IS for itching. It helps with sleep as well. I have been an RN 23 years and have a pharmacy assistant degree which makes me knowledgable in this area. have a great day! :)

It is nothing like xanax. It's like a strong Benadryl prescribed to treat anxiety. It's non narcotic and whoever says it is a high like Xanax has no idea what they are talking about.

NO it's not used for people coming off opioids. I have been in treatment with many addicts and they either give them tramadol, phenobarbital, or in some cases they give them subutex. Now, they might prescribe this for opioid withdrawal if the patient is having anxiety along with one of the medicines I mentioned above, and it's only prescribed as needed.

Actually, Hydroxyzine HCL (brand name Atarax or Vistaril) is indeed prescribed to patients with moderate to severe dermatological conditions such as atopic dermatitis or eczema and to a lesser degree psoriasis for its anti-pruritic properties (it suppresses itching). Technically, it is an antihistamine, but being a rather old drug (1950s) it is commonly prescribed today for its mild anxiolytic, antiobsessive and antipsychotic properties. Zyrtec (Cetirizine) is a more modern antihistamine which is actually a first generation metabolite of Hydroxyzine. (In other words, if you ingest Hydroxyzine, your body's first reaction is to metabolize it and form Cetirizine.) As a metabolite, Zyrtec has far less of a soporific effect on the subject -- it doesn't cause drowsiness / sleepiness nearly as much as Hydroxyzine does.

They are NOT wrong. As well as what you stated it is also for itching. Any research on this med will prove true. I also take this med for itching when I get poison ivy.

I was actually given this Rx because I had both insomnia AND the itchies, though my itchies were because of high Calcium levels.
So, you should be careful with saying "you're wrong" because you don't know everything, everyone and every situation. Whoever said it's for itchies is most definitely right. Peace. :) <3

Yes Hydroxyzine or name brand Vistaril is for itching and side effects some have from narcotic pain meds. They do potentiate meds like they say. Make u sleepy because they're similar to Benedryl. This meds been around for a long time. Whoever said its not for itching is wrong because I've been prescribed them to this problem but only took them at bedtime because they make u so very sleepy!

I don't normally put anything out there on social media but...
I find it interesting how strongly people have opinions on everything based solely on their own education & personal experience. It seems that a lot of people aren't willing to be open minded to realize that they may not know everything, including those with medical degrees seem to throw that out there as if to say " I know more than you because I have letters behind my name." That's not necessarily the case & my background IS medical.
Hydroxyzine was prescribed to me for anxiety some years ago and I was surprise when I was prescribed hydroxyzine for an extremely bad case of poison oak, along with other meds & shots. When I read that it may cause drowsiness or dizziness I was surprised because I NEVER had that side effect.
That's my point, just because someone doesn't have the same side effects as someone else or the medication doesn't work quite the same way for everyone doesn't mean that it wouldn't work or have the side effect that someone else may have.
I just feel that too many of us seem to have a tendency or NEED to show how right we are and how wrong someone else is when that may not be the case. I think that listening, truly listening to others and giving our experiences without standing in judgment of theirs might prove more helpful than just pushing how right we are and how wrong they are.
