Refilling My Valid Xanax Prescription Early (Page 11)

Updated

I only see one doctor and he gives me a 3 month supply of xanax. When I went the last time he wrote me out a prescription but I still had two refills. I had a friend and her husband passed away and I gave her some of mine thinking I would have no problem re-filling the prescription. I had sense enough not to go to the same pharmacy and not to give my insurance information. So I go to this small drug store by my house and I had to fill out paperwork such as dob, name and my DL #. Well they paged me to the front of the store and advised me that it was 7 days to early for them to re-fill. So my question is where can I go to re-fill a prescription that is valid written by the same doctor. I only tried one place, I'm guessing they must have a data base if you try and refill your prescription early (even without your insurance) does anyone have advice on where I can go to get this filled?

I live in Florida ...It is by law 27 days, however the law is written in a manner that basically gives the pharmacist rules on what is too early... (26 days is too early and 27 days is OK) Unfortunately it is not written to say that your medication must be dispensed you on the 27th day, that has been left to the discretion of the pharmacist.

A few years ago, when the DEA started coming after our pain management doctors especially the pill mills, they also went after some pharmacies. They went after CVS and Walgreen's with a vengeance A couple of the CVS stores could no longer handle any of the controlled medications for a period of two years. They also closed down one of Walgreen's distribution centers in South Florida. With each of these events came the largest fines of its kind in history. (millions of dollars were paid in fines has given these chains in particular.. cold feet.

So some of those pharmacies have guidelines in place by their corporate offices on when they can dispense these scheduled medication to their customers and I am pretty sure it is not 27 day.

I went through so much hell trying to get my medications filled when I was living in Orlando at the time. Even though I had been filling at Walgreen for more than 10 years I could no longer count on them to fill my prescriptions. Every month I had to rely on my boyfriend to help me try and find my medications which sometimes resulted in me going days without medication because we could not find anyone who would or could fill my prescriptions. Sometimes we would run a full tank of gas out of the car over a period of a few days and still not have my medications.

So, we decided to move out of the Orlando and ended up purchasing a home in Ocala. After initially having a hard time finding a doctor that would agree to give me anything close to what I had been taking before we moved, I finally settled on one because he was the best I had found. After a few month and multiple drug panels, I am guessing that he trusts me more because he has increased my medication so I am now comfortable most of the time.

Although I do not feel I should have to tell a pharmacist what is wrong with me, and feel that it is wrong to refuse to fill my prescription for me when I am there on the 29th day (having the pharmacist telling me to come back)

I went against my grain and disclosed to the pharmacist what was wrong with me that has me taking the medications I am on. I also told him very nicely that my boyfriend would probably come back the following day for me when the pharmacist refused to fill my script on day 29 even though the doctor had wrote on the script to fill it the day before. Then I smiled at him and told him to have a good day before my boyfriend and I left.

It has been 8 months now and I have never had to look at a different pharmacy for my medication. They always have it for me when I need it. Although he would not fill my prescription on day 29 before with instructions on it that I should fill it the day earlier.. they will now fill for me when we do go in on the 28th day or the 29th instead of making me wait. To be honest, I did not really need the medication early; I just wanted it early so that I knew I would have it when it was time.

Try remembering that you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar!

I hope you can see why they are so afraid: just like our doctors they too are afraid!

Praying you have the medication that you need until you can find someone that will fill your prescription!

I saw a psychiatrist last week for anxiety , palpitations, and insomnia .i had previously been on xanax and Ativan to help anxiety and sleep. He gave me 30 .5 xanax and sonata for sleep. The sonata helps to fall asleep but i feel it's giving me less quality sleep, waking few times per night and still feel tired in morning. So I've been taking more of the xanax to get back to sleep since sonata has 1 hr half life and will be out by time my follow up appt next week. I'll tell him all of this, but I want to know if he is legally able to prescribe me a new xanax rx 2 weeks early ? I read that if he changes the strength or dosage he can. Aso wondering if I should ask not talk on the phone to change to a diff sleeping pill before my appt. Any help would be great, thanks !

When you say 3 days early, do you mean the 27th or 28th day?

@Ash, stay away from Sonata and Ativan. Perhaps a little more Xanax is required? Plus today's sleeping meds mostly clash with Xanax. Don't lose your Xanax and always watch the amount you take, dangerous stuff!

Ive seen same doctor for a year and each month i get 3 xanax a day 8 hydrocodone 2 adderall and 1 blood pressure pill (200 norco, 90 xanax 60 adderall and 30 blood pressure pills) use a local pharmacy that isnt a franchise, when i got 120 hydro it was a 20 day supply ive been increased bc 2nd shoulder replacement in 2 years and am in phys therapy, this pharmacist has filled all meds. 25 days between dr. Appointments but must've been b****y yesterday bc told me 1. For usually 50 cent copay (my blood press med was faxed in dec 2014 with 12 refills, since it was initially faxed 6+ months ago i had to pay $25 cash bc insur wont pay bc a RX is good for 6months only, however is making me wait 28 days for my xanax hydro and adderall (adderall is cash pay bc if 18+ insur wont pay for it) im going 11 hours away outta town for two weeks when its 26 days in, i will call in on them for refills that day to see if he is in better mood if not since he kept them on file and its after 10/6/14 can i get them transferred to pharm there on day 28? Btw nurse pracritioners are being given the right to prescribe hydros again now in Arkansas, just wondering does anyone else know pharmacists that think all his clientele are dopeys bc they get medication???

You can never have enough spare Xanax. Store it somewhere as one day you might lose your provider!

Thank you for that. We get berated and humiliated enough out there just being on these meds. I'm not a junky looking for a fix, however, this medication causes a horrible physical withdrawal and even being off it for two days has caused me to have a grand mal seizure.

My xanax/ alprazolam 2mg, bid, qty. 60...was transferred from a CVS in Texas to CVS in LA . Picked up at CVS in LA and the p :) pharmacy in LA dispensed on bottle as: Alprazolam 2mg, qty. 60, with directions to take 2 tablets twice per day....a 15 day supply.
went to dr. Appt./ same dr. , and he gave me a script for the Xanax 2mg, qty.60, take 1 tab. Bid ???? Since the CVS in LA dispensed with directions different than the script I now have , given by samw psychiatrist a few days apart, will I have to get them filled at same place; CVS in ©??

If he gave you a paper script you should be able to go anywhere you like, possibly restricted to the same State on certain medications. Truthfully though you don't need them sooner just because there was a mistake made.

Those having issue with overusing and afraid to go into rapid withdrawal or stuck in a panic attack look into having your doctor prescribe clonodine (not KLONOPIN) it is a blood pressure med used to tear anxiety and sleep and typically no uncommon to be prescribed with a benzo! You must realize you will build a tolerance to Xanax and pretty fast so running out is no uncommon either however the clonodine will help you sleep as leases seizures best of luck

Your doc Can rewrite you more meds, even if it's early. He had to change the amounts if you're filling in certain states, or you'll have to wait until the 30 day window. For example; I couldn't get CVS to refill on day 24, so I drive to TN (a mile away) & they filled now problem. It's regulated by the State you are trying to fill in.

Is this true about cvs (in New Jersey ) not connected with other pharmacies databases still ? I got my last Rx for Xanax on 11/24 and need to refill it tomorrow 11/18 but don't know if it will be denied by my normal pharmacy Walgreens ( they say 2 days early ) which means the 22nd I can fill. If I go to cvs and pay cash will they be able to fill it or do they have the ability to check in database where I got my last one filled and all that info ? Just don't want to get in trouble. Or would calling my insurance company pharmacy department and asking them when I can refill it early how many days would they be able to give me that info ? Thanks

I think the word "narcotic" is being mixed up and defined in more than one way. Some people refer to and consider narcotics as any drug which is commonly abused and trafficked illegally. Others define narcotics as only opioids (opiate pain killers such as Hydrocodone, Morphine, etc).

For example, if you Google the definition of narcotic it says: "a drug or other substance affecting mood or behavior and sold for nonmedical purposes, especially an illegal one"

However, on the DEA's web page for Controlled Substance Schedules, they seem to only be referring to opioid medications when using the word "narcotic":

"Examples of Schedule II narcotics include: hydromorphone (Dilaudid®), methadone (Dolophine®), meperidine (Demerol®), oxycodone (OxyContin®, Percocet®), and fentanyl (Sublimaze®, Duragesic®). Other Schedule II narcotics include: morphine, opium, codeine, and hydrocodone ...

Examples of Schedule III narcotics include: products containing not more than 90 milligrams of codeine per dosage unit (Tylenol with Codeine®), and buprenorphine (Suboxone®) ... "

So, despite both definitions being technically correct, one thing is for certain: Benzodiazepenes are NOT opioid medications and are in a different category. Hope this helps to clear up some confusion! Please vote me up if you found this helpful at all ;)

I did get my Xanax early at a pharmacy that I usually don't go to , but I took a new rx to my usual pharmacy today after seeing my doctor yesterday and they caught that I had gotten it early somewhere else, does that mean that they will inform my doctor and effect me getting my meds in the future?
