Pro Time At 300
UpdatedMy Dr. Tested me today. I have been taking coumadin for over one month @ 5mg one day, then 6 for two, and repeating. My level was 300! That seems high to me as my goal was 200. My Dr. Told me he didn't need to see me for a whole month now, and I am concerned my levels will keep going up! Any feedback? Thank you!

Hi Zena,
If I had this concern I'd probably give my doctor a call about it right away, just to be on the safe side. However for reference, I did come across an article on PubMed that may help explain what prothrombin time levels are considered to be in the normal range. And apparently if you are taking Coumadin to prevent clotting, it is likely that your doctor will want your INR levels to be somewhere between 2.0 and 3.0 (I'm thinking this translates to 200 or 300 depending on how it's being measured?). So if that is the case, then it looks like you may be on the upper end of that scale.

Given the information above, I'd strongly encourage you to ask your doctor for more specific details about what result may be best for you individually, since normal value ranges have also been reported to vary slightly at different labs. I can understand your concern though, since it seems borderline. I just wish some doctor's wouldn't be so vague in how they explain things to patients, but you may have to pry it out of him/her to get a straight forward answer on the continuation of your treatment as well as the read out of your levels.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
