Prescribed Oxycodone 30 Mg Under Pain Management & Drug Screen Showed Morphine

Updated

I have spinal stenosis, sciatica, neurapathy and degeneration in my lumbar area where 3 discs are involved and leg and foot pain along with the chronic back pain. I suffer terriby. I was diagnosed several yrs ago and it is getting worse I have had diagnosis by a board certified ortho dr specializing in backs and participates in sports med and a board certified top neurosurgeon in my area. I go to pain management and have been going for 15 months. i am tired of living and being dependent on the oxycodone I am prescribed so I have decided to go thru the surgey that consists of the hardware to support. I was looking to get asap. in meantime my knee started giving me lots of pain and swelling so I went to ortho knee specialist and he took xrays and told me I need total knee replacement and should do asap before the back surgery. When a week and half later I am dismissed from pain management. I was very anxious that I was finally doing something to set me free from the dependency of the strong pain killers I am prescribed and the possibility of no more back and leg pain. I am at the point in my life at 59 yrs old and wife, mother and grandmother whom does all for the family and my husband works a full time job so feels like he should not have to help with housework or most anything around our home as far at that goes. Our only child and grand kids live 8 hrs away from us and we see them once or twice a year. I'm prescribed 30 mg oxycodone by pain management and my drug screen showed that I had morphine in my system although I have not takin morphine. I get drug screening every month when I go for follow up appts to get my refills. All of my previous screenings have been fine. What in the world would cause morphine to show? My oxycodone works fine and have not taken or use any other controlled drug since I have been under this doctor's care. I got a call a week and half later saying I am dismissed from his care and registered letter saying the same. I have been putting off getting surgery that 2 drs have told me that I need 2 4inch titanium rods and 6 screws . Can you tell me what would have caused the morphine to show up?

Hi Suzanne,

First off, I just want to say that I can relate to what you're going through with the spinal stenosis. My mom was just diagnosed with it along with degenerative disc disease in which her nerves are being pinched, and she will be going through with the surgery at the end of this month (titanium rods and screws in her cervical spine/neck region). This condition is definitely nothing to put off if you can help it, just because it seems to get worse if it is not treated. The surgery does look scary, but if you have family or friends supporting you, it is a must in my honest opinion. Going for walks everyday as a form of exercise may also be very beneficial to alleviate some of the discomfort associated with it.

Regarding the false positive for Morphine, on the cheaper, less reliable tests, it seems as though anything is possible. False positives are known to occur on them anywhere from 4 to 50% of the time. As a result of their faults, these drug tests have a difficult time trying to distinguish between the drug class and the drug name; and are most often incorrect to say the least.

Have you considered getting retested?

I'm very sorry for what happened to you dear! I'm almost 29 years old and from L3-1-L5-s1 I have spinal canal stenosis, nuerall foramaminal stenosis, severe degenerative disc disease at all levels, moderate facet joint arthrosis, dorsal osteophytosis, and 3 large disc protrusions or herniations! Also, the disc protrusion at L5-S1 is 2cm which is huge. The protruding discs are compressing my s1 and L5 nerve roots! I think or actually I'm positive the lab got it wrong that you had morphine in your system. OXYCODONE does not come up as morphine in drug tests!! Jimmy

I'm going to be brief because I'm having difficulty saving my reply..spam..password...anyway, that is so sad. oxycodone derives from morphine. Codeine turns to morphine once it hits the liver. I'm not 100% correct with the wording of the liver thing. To me morphine is I interesting how so much derives from it , how the liver turns codeine etc. This happened to me in a small town except the test showed methamphetamine. I don't do that drug.I had several previous tests that were correct. I googled it and Welbutrin can give a false positive. Also was your test administered on site and then secondly to a lab? I don't know if it matters at this point but did you request a second testing? or are they just refusing to help you at all? It's not right they terminated you in this manner. what sucks more is If you find another Pm, will records follow you? I ended up moving out of the small state with ONLY 1 PM. It was hard going through the pain and false positive and labeled a seeker...I pray you find a solution...

Test they use usually shows a different opiate name cause the test can't provide the name of the drug your taking exactly. An opiate is an opiate so the drug name is very hard for it to determine.
If you went to an ER they could've also gave you something that had a trace of morphine.
