Prednisone Weight Gain

I'm a 74 yr old male and have gained 20lbs on prednisone for PMR and my face and stomach are bloated. Dr started me on 25mg, then after 6 wks and blood wk, reduced me down to 12 1/2 mg and then symptoms returned. I went to 12mg and now 10mg. and I'm ok so far. What is the outlook for people like me on prednisone with poly myalgia rheumatica?

Hello, Rip! How are you?

The side effects you've described are common with long-term use of steroids and won't likely go away, as long as you are taking it.

Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may include nausea, dizziness, fluid retention, acne, nervousness and insomnia.

Unfortunately, there aren't many other treatment options for this condition and the Prednisone is usually taken for a year or more.

Have you had any improvement from taking it?

Verwon... Thanks for reply. I was in alot of pain initially.. Began 25 mg daily and within 24 hours...felt like new. That was in April. As the Doctor slowly tried to get me down..I had a relaps at 15 mg. Went back up...all better...and now...back down to 10 mg...and so far...so good. Sounds like you have had experience or have knowledge on this subject. Let me know.
