Percocet Vs Tramadol

Updated

I am a 20 year chronic pain sufferer who every 3 years or so has to detox off 180-240 mg Oxycodone to lower tolerance. Then I start back on 4-6 Percocet a day and gradually increase dosage as needed. I have just completed one of these detoxes using the "Thomas Recipe" - Now, to control the pain again...a friend gave me a few 37.5 mg Tramadol and at the moment I take 2 at a time so 75 mg once a day and find that they elevate my mood quite effectively as well as kill the pain...So I want to know which drug is worse for your liver and brain cells...Tramadol or Percocet?

As a medical provider my first question to you , would be are you being followed by a pain management doctor. Secondly with the level of Percocet you are taking I would say you have a serious problem . Then do deal with the withdrawals has to be horrible. With regards to the tramadol this medication also has dependence issues along with lowering seizure threshold if you are prone to seizures. I addition tramadol should not be taken with antidepressants such as celexa , Zoloft, and Paxil and the like . My other suggestion is that if you liv in a state where medical marijuana is available I would check this out. This is so much safer that destroying your body with these narcotics. Good luck in your pain management.

Thanks...Well, I don't take 48 Percocet a day when my tolerance is at peak...I take 3 X 80mg OxyNEO...but sure, that's a problem...and I recognize this which is why I do the periodic detoxes to lower tolerance. I am in Canada so medical MJ is available but I find that the amount of pot I have to use to kill the pain usually renders me incapable of doing anything else...Strange as it seems, I get more "stoned" on pot than the hillbilly H. However, I think small doses of Oxy or similar to kill breakthrough pain, combined with small doses of THC/CDB to elevate mood may be the answer. It sounds to me like you would recommend Percocet over Tramadol in this case (though you don't really like either one), is that correct?

I agree with you about pot it is better for you than narcotics if u live in a state you can get it.I wish I lived in a state that allowed doctors to percribe it.

@billyvee,

Have you checked out any of the higher CBD strains of cannabis? My mom happens to be a chronic pain patient supplementing with a 50/50 concentrated solution of THC/CBD. Apparently, the CBD doesn't make you feel stoned, yet it still carries the medicinal benefits of the plant itself.

From what I understand, many pain patients are now turning to CBD's so they can get the medicinal effect while maintaining a clear mind to function during the day. A sativa variety in particular would probably be best suited for that, since they are often considered to be more of an upper than a downer. However, you may find that having a little green or black tea along with any cannabis can help keep you more active during the day.

I hope this helps!

I am 18 days post knee replacement. My Dr has been very conservative with pain pills and I have had enough to take only 1 oxycodone 5mg every 4 hours in order to have enough pills to last, which just hasn't worked very well. Now there will be no more refills. I am having overwhelming pain on the sides of my left knee, at the outside of the left hip over the bursa, and up and down that IT band. The pain is most horrible at night - the medication is not enough to lessen my pain below an 8 and I sit up and cry for a couple hours every night. I also get one Celebrex 200 and one aspirin 325 per day. Please help - what can I do, or what can I take that will actually work?

Les:

I feel for you. My wife has has major knee surgery on both legs in the period of 1 year. I know it can be very painful and the pain doesn't go away after the 3 week mark. Sometimes, it gets much worse especially if there is a lot of swelling. Ice can help with that.

The only thing you can do is explain to your surgeon. They usually don't like to continue with pain meds and will refer you to pain management. That is where you should look next. Sadly, from what I have seen, it seems that surgery patients in this country are not provided adequate pain management post-op.
