Oxycontin Damaged My Teeth (Page 25)

Updated

Has anyone else known oxycontin to rot the teeth? I used to be on vicodin until my doctor told me I needed to switch to a morphine based meds. She put me on ms contin but I had problems with it so she put me on 80mg oxycontin. Eventually my body built up a tolerance so she kept raising it, i have am now on from 4-6 per day of the 80mg tabs. It scares me that this is what rotted my teeth because only 5 yrs ago i had only 2 cavities that needed filling and then only 1 yr after going on the oxycontin i had to have all my top front teeth pulled as they where rotting from the inside out the dentist said my mouth looked like a heroin addict's mouth looks. He said it was shocking to him that normally he only saw such damage from someone who abused drugs with so much dental damage, but i have never done any street drugs and have only take my meds as prescribed to me. Now i have lost 80% of my teeth and as a beautiful 41 yr old mother its devastating. I cant afford dentures and sure cant afford implants like i would like to have. I am a single mother and refuse to date because i have lost my teeth now, i had beautiful teeth before i started on the oxycontin and only 2 small cavities that needed filling. Does anyone else have this same problem and if so why hasn't the company making oxycontin warn patients of this possible problem?

If i had known this would cause me to lose most of my teeth i would have never agreed to go on it. Of course my family doctor who has been prescribing them tells me she hasn't heard of any other cases, yet when i researched the med online there where others like this why hasn't something been put in the warnings about this med, i sure would have preferred to have lived in pain the rest of my life rather than lose my teeth and be unable to even eat now. My health has gone downhill fast as i cant even chew foods necessary for good health. All I can eat now are yogurts, and liquid type of foods which isn't much. My kids are 7 and 9 yrs old and they watch me cry when we go out to eat and they order steak, and i can smell it but can't order one as i know i wont be able to chew it. This is so devastating for me. I want teeth so badly if i could wish for anything in life besides not to be poor anymore it would be to have a full set of real teeth or implants but i could never dream of having them, and i don't know anyone out there willing to just help me get any either. I have always helped others all my life, but cant even help myself, i have had to have 29 surgeries now since 1991 when a drunk driver hit my car and caused me major injuries with my lower back and knees, i have had a full lower back fusion and 8 arthroscopic knee surgeries until a year ago they finally had to do a full right knee replacement and now they are talking about doing my left knee soon.

So my life has been up and down with surgeries and i would go thru one more surgery just to have teeth implanted if i could. but i could never afford it, but i would like to know why these drug manufacturers are making a medication that could cause teeth to rot like this without warning us patients or even warning the doctors about it. This is just terrible of them i think, as now i am the one paying for this by having no teeth to eat with at such a young age now. I am a vibrant young 41 yr old at 5'3, 120lbs, slim woman, nice looking too as i was a model in my younger days, so i keep my looks up. But to have no teeth now... I never smile anymore, I am to ashamed to smile even though it wasn't my fault i lost my teeth. I think they should pay for me to have new teeth but no one wants to admit that the med causes it, but my diet wasn't the problem back when i started the medication and i wasn't drinking coca-cola either or doing street drugs so i know that wasn't the cause either. The only thing that changed within one year to cause this was starting the oxycontin medication. Well, if anyone out there can help me let me know thanks.

Hi Everyone I'm so pleased we've chosen to gather right now. It's Sunday the 4th of October (2015) and wanted to drop a few words of support for everyone here. The dental issue we know is monumental--if those of you who were originally injured under WC contact your adjuster (unless you settled medical already), and have your primary pain specialist document on treatment note to the effect, "Mrs. X was put on opioid therapy for her chronic pain causally (that is legal term for a DIRECT relation to the comp injury must be used) related to her work injury of January 1, 2030. Always have this doctor write the date of the actual injury. Then "any of my patients or anyone on chronic opioid therapy which is required to control her pain, allow quality of life, ambulation, and decrease suicide potential will have decreased saliva leading to dental erosion." Then also make sure a dental group who is well aware of this is willing to do two things--give you an estimate for the restoration, and probably the top dollar is more important then what your body is willing to take.

Those on regular Medicare know there is no dental. Those on Medicaid (depending on your state) do have in most cases dental coverage so get involved with your computer and look up coverage, dentists who can be used for this work, and get moving. The ultimate reason is to prevent infection that can lead to death; dental infection WILL go to cardiac tissue (heart) or the brain, and can create sudden sepsis and death. At the least abscess, bone infection (osteomyelitis) and that pain is additional chronic pain you do not want it is hard to cure infection to bone for two reasons; one is there is no 02 supply (oxygen) and no blood supply so the only antibiotics used for this are Ciprofloxin and usually a Flagyl type drug for obvious reasons. Even with this in mind this bone causes such extreme pain that those of us with RSD will tell you it is worse or similar to RSD for example, and you will end up with an oral surgeon cutting it down to remove infection (jaw below teeth) so you are losing teeth and bone. If you are getting covered at some point for implants you need enough bone to hold implant.

I will again be reworking my legal brief today but yesterday the i***** I've written about from SSA who are completely confused I can tell you my original case is complex (back in 80's) and then I got OFF by going to get a 4 year nursing degree and then had a huge catastrophic injury. I realize now that because I was SSDI so long ago (80's) that I fall under a regulation for those disabled so long ago--we did not have these reject programs like ticket to work, none of that and a slew of other changes that they do not contact you about when they decide after YOU DO THE WORK TO GET OFF SSDI (college become a RN etc.) to reinstate the original claim when unfortunately you have this serious injury.

Normally my claim is reviewed at a hub (Philadelphia) but due to some documents to support my short stent at a DON job to help pay the damn transportation to California for five years because my comp has NEVER in over 20 years paid my mileage which shows another side they did not know, had to go to these local yokels to let them scan the same documents. I in fact, had one woman (very kind and knowing of regulations for she has been a veteran at SSA for like many years) and even tried to call her originally and she is either promoted or perhaps changed jobs or locations and another party was assigned. He told me if I took this stuff down to the local office they would scan it and he could sign off. He had already zeroed another job attempt.

Well the local yokel stole my claim from Philadelphia. She had the unmitigated gall to call for her supervisor (both have been reported by me I do not take injustice to anyone kindly) to ask her "I cannot make any movement on her claim this guy up in Philadelphia holds it I need to steal it from him!" and I was shocked to crap on this right out in the lobby at one of those walk up booths. This little supervisor comes up looks at my last name and starts (in a loud voice) almost screaming saying "Are you Dr. So and So's wife are you are you?" Of course I am NOT and thought my God where is privacy if I were. She pushed on this and this must be some local physician (I looked him up later), and then thought oh if I were his wife would she have pushed it through the witch?

This is now a nightmare from hell. When I was first SSDI there was no indigent SSI for one. No ticket so really I have no knowledge and with the serious nature of the pain going to Central Pain Syndrome I do not have to ok. I am allowed to just suffer and be disabled although I reach out and help others it's my nature. I had planned since all kinds of crap goes into motion when you try to disable someone for the wrong reason (2 years ago) meaning OVERPAYMENT etc. I had my plan of action in place and now yesterday find that these fruit loops have further screwed themselves by sending a denial on a reconsideration now that is not done in Louisiana (where I lived 10 years) and it is in Texas but due to the local office being hateful I had asked for the conference where I could actually have phone witnesses and more information we checked that off and NEVER got a reply. So they stop checks without a notice in writing which I just got, and the added benefit of these other changes not existing when I originally was awarded.

I need to pull together some paperwork today now to change approach. I find that I'm eligible to actually start a new claim which I would not do but go for expedited reinstatement and jump start that one month the i**** was trying to get me on for example. My health has never improved which at this point in my case I only get a medical interview letter bout every 7 years. So I get the half cocked proof that they wrongly did a recon in the bad office not allowing additional information or perhaps letters from friends for example, and half heartedly got in the mail after they had me already fill out an ALJ request a month before so they are literally proving their Fk factor plus.

I look forward to hearing more from all of you posting; the dental topic is serious but right now we all face the FDA attempt to restrict dosage to 120 mg. morphine equivalent which was due to HIGH OVERDOSE and death rate BUT the clear fact is the HIGH OD DEATH risk is from those NOT PRESCRIBED our medications and we know then what factor or folks were using our medications. We need to somehow push our next president who will see the wrongs in health care but may need a year or several to start changing back to where we were (a lot better than now) to realize how to treat those with IP (intractable pain) not the addicts abusing our medication.

Mailman awesome just having yet another new and wonderful friend is great. I just took a break and realized today that they now (local SSA) made a very major error forcing me to fill out an ALJ denial sheet (hearing) this was on 9/4/2015 I was in immediately on 9/3/2015 for my check did not deposit. Yes since I am the old SSDI mine goes in on the third of the month. Further I told the twit (this local office is dangerous truly) I was speaking to two attorney's one actually I adored in Louisiana, one in Tennessee and had spoken to one in Houston earlier. To think of anyone going before an ALJ without documentation is bizarre.

I've already won against Attorney General without a lawyer over four times on my compensation pro se. I am being held up now for they are appealing (won again on August 19, 2015) and we are talking 20 years mileage 5 years to California.

But I need a physician immediately I have another one lined up who sounds good in Louisiana but I keep waiting to call (first faxing over an introduction letter letting them know I'm a nurse and understand FDA concept for I normally was on extremely high medication since I'm a rare ultra rapid opioid metabolizer) a few records, a brief medical history and a few tests. Too much makes them crazy and actually once in they will want to officially request your records.

I finished my Position Statement for the comp yesterday and am deciding if I must submit all the proof files again since the full Commission will review and has access since I just won in August and if you submit too much it's forbidden the statement can only be 10 pages double spaced and as it stands years ago I had the best attorney on East Coast for comp (we won against this new AG who despises me now for winning pro se) and trying all the gimmicks with my health now so very fragile and death imminent will be the next go round. I am going to submit damage from SSA as payable to the employer if they had paid mileage for my treating physician then I would not be facing the SSA denial after so many years disabled. The lower level ranks of SSA do not realize what CMS (formerly HCFA) demands.

The employer started settlement attempts with me almost 10 years ago. My medical award due to medications and the extent of the injury is definitely very high. My last round of monthly medications was anywhere between $25,000 to $30,000 a MONTH. I warned people who voted Odumma that opioids would be held up (shortages) to increase prices
which was done.

I'd say my MSA approved by CMS for medication annuity was $1.85 million five years ago and would be higher now due to the increases. That is for a life span average of 20 years. Also I must due to allergies and specific DNA have brand on LA and one specific generic works for BT. If that company stops making it I'm in trouble for many of my allergies my now deceased (and missed PM of 10 years) physician figured this out---are dyes, flavorings, glue, adhesives so as you see the generics kill me. Plus FDA allows up to 42 to 47% LESS or MORE opioid inclusion compared to brand. It is cheaper to use less for generic companies so if you check your medications you will understand why brand costs more and works better.

Well time to consider next steps. Mailman do you do the chat on Wednesday night? I did it last week but they had to turn my microphone off since there was noise and I had no noise on my end and a new laptop so something was off but I think I'll try again.

Oh yeh forgot to say I did read on regulations when SSA makes an error they can just rectify in my case it would kill a lot of birds with one stone. However I am thinking of turning this local office into OIG for fraud it works both ways!

Hi, Mailman! Just wanted to let you know that I'm still alive and kicking but just haven't felt well enough to post much lately. It was good to see YOUR post and I was especially pleased and thank you for your kind words. Boy, there sure is quite a lot of people sharing on the forum lately and that's a good thing I suppose but it also causes me to wonder, aside from sharing each other's pain, both physical and psychological, what, if anything, can or will ever come of our dental dilemma. It's very disheartening to know, even though there are many of us on this forum as well as countless others who aren't but who also share the same devastation from the side effects of the opiode therapy, nothing will ever be done about it. I get terrified when I think that I could fall victim to an MI or a stroke at any moment just because the pills that I absolutely count on just to get through the day are causing it and there's nothing I can do about it. Oh, sure I could if I have several tens of thousands of dollars to get implants but I can't even afford to pay to have the ones I have left removed so I can get dentures. Besides, and like P450 has indicated in her posts, I'm fairly sure that I wouldn't have enough bone left in my lower jaw to even attempt implants (again, if I could afford them). I know this because I was able to go to a dental school for awhile and they had to remove all but the very front lower teeth and the partial denture they gave me sits quite a bit lower in my mouth than it did when I first got them. Without it, I wouldn't be able to eat anything solid so I depend on it no matter where it sits. Well, enough of my BMC session for the day but I did want to acknowledge your post, let you know that I was still around, and thank you for your kind words. They meant the world to me when I read them. Hang in there till the next time and my thoughts and prayers are with you as they are for everyone on this forum (but especially for YOU!). Be well and try to have as pain free a day as you possibly can. Love and compassion to you all..... Christine

Thanks, Hiflyer, for the quick reply! When did this chat group start and do you know who started it? This is exactly the kind of thing that I was teething to put together but couldn't get more than a small group together and eventually even those seemed to have lost interest. I'm really at a loss tho figure this revelation out right now. Thanks again, Hiflyer!!!!

I was with the top guy in California traveled from Texas 5 years and suddenly 30 out of state people dropped but there are other issues too ones which I won't put on this public forum.

I did the chat first time last week but on a newer laptop my PC had to have mike blocked but people like Jersey (Robin) are moderators so please everyone sign up. It is 9 p.m. EST.

Check in later we should make this our hot spot. Perhaps the destruction of teeth was a good deal.

Love to all :)

pass info along such as not many people knew that here in FLA
to get your script filled I had to visit sometimes 5 different drug stores
do to gov. control of amounts that drug stores can get per month!
Stay as well as you can! Regards, Norman

My gosh you are on a lot of oxytocin! I took 160mg for 10 years and am currently off them, but I too am having a hard time with my teeth. They continue to break and I've had to have several pulled. I've poured thousands of dollars in to my mouth ie; braces, crowns, ect... and now all that has been wasted! I'm thinking class action lawsuit? ??

I feel your pain as I woke up this morning feeling something wasn't right in my mouth (well, more so than usual, that is). I brushed my tongue around the top of my mouth (I don't have any molars left on the bottoms) and found that one of my upper left molars had broken by three quarters all the way almost to the gum line!
Insofar as a class action suit is concerned, the subject has been brought up more than a few times since I joined this forum and although most everyone agrees that it would be the course of action they'd like to see happen, we also agree that it would be virtually impossible to fight against big pharmas with their armies of high priced attorneys, it will be just as difficult to find an attorney, much less a firm, to take a case like this pro bono and/or even on contingency. I'm pretty sure that most everyone here would get on board if someone were to find one but, so far, no one has been able to. Good luck to you and welcome to our "family"!

A class action suit should be done even if big pharmaceutical companies will fight...
Remember, lawyers work on a contingency basis. The lawyers will take a case if they think they can win, if enough people join.... and if they aren't working for the big pharm companies.
So sad that so many are suffering from this and our personal battle against pain and illnesses.

Bless you all!

Yes, I totally understand all of that and, believe me, most all of us have tried to find an attorney or firm who would take the case on a contingency basis work no luck so far. Perhaps your efforts could work better than ours have to this point and I can virtually assure you that if were able to find anyone who would take the case we'd all be with you!

Everyone,

I am a professional nurse and published researcher PLEASE do as I suggested. If you still are under insurance coverage have your PM specialist document this and also if they are running cortisol levels for uncontrolled pain which I am sure most aren't it seems after you've seen the best in the U.S. he is the only one doing this but this documentation will state you have this from opioid use and the necessity for the use of opioids that without which (in my case) you'd die from intractable pain, or you have suicidal pain level hence opioids.

Then get your dental estimate and go to your insurer and demand the coverage you still have. Legal suits are based on you doing what you should FIRST not just suing.

Ok enough from me peace out.

P450 you have so much information and insight as to what a person with these bone and dental issues. It's so valuable to this blog. I myself have battled a rare infection from sitting next to a very sick person on a 3 hour flight besides major auto accidents, then my daughter when she was 12 was hit with a 7lb rock thrown off an overpass when she was 12 hitting her in the face in 1985. Besides the public's help immediately after the tragedy she's had no help. We never found who threw the rock which was bigger than 7lbs, I held the rock myself. We are battling with getting her ssd since she's never been able to work. You would think her ssd would be a given, but it's not, as her face is collapsing, she's getting worse with very little help and no ssd? She blind in one eye and has had 19 surgeries and needs 20 more. Its so hard as you know. This support is invaluable to her and I. Thank you for sharing your story because it really helps us to see the battle. It also helps so many others. Its time for all of us to not have to fight so hard to get what is rightfully ours. Bless you all and good luck in your battles.

Has anyone had any short term memory lose? I am really having a problem with that but remembering my childhood and on till things within a 2 month period it seems there r a lot of blank areas that my family is making me aware of ! It's freaking me out ! Also involuntary muscle movement! ! I have 8 ruptured, herniated. Bulging or damaged disc . I have gotten use to numbness in arms and legs and a lot of other things that hurt or burn and all over pain but these 2 things are new that are just starting and don't know if anyone else is feeling this ? A lot of things you get use to and get tired of repeating what's wrong . It is amazing what we all have to get use too ! I am so sorry to hear Ali about your 12 year old going threw the pain and suffering that she has and still is going threw from someone's heartless and ignorant and hateful act of violence ! I will have her in my prayers along with everyone here on this site ! Mail delivered with prayers for a young 14 year old girl God Bless you ! Mailman

Ali and Mailman I am so sorry for your suffering.

I spend 3 hours in SSA today guys and pushed for EXR which with my history should work even in this dirty local office. The supervisor literally HOPED I was there because one of her lackeys literally filled out an ALJ request on 9/4/2015 when there was no recon denial letter (then I got one on the 28th after they cut my September and October checks). I am a miracle story I was disabled quite young and re-abled becoming a 4 year professional nurse and a published scholarly psychiatric researcher. I was working for my alma mater one of the top teaching hospitals in America and had a catastrophic injury the purpose of me being there was tuition paid for my executive MSHA which only 20 a year were accepted half were physicians.

So I got off disability and when I disabled very young there was no ticket to work or half of the regulations. If you review my file some nitwit twit just applied new regulations and work attempts if you will as if I knew or had notification which of course is not the case. I mentioned today "if you are unaware of such changes then SSA does allow in such cases exception." I also talked to 3 SSA attorneys one in Louisiana across the road I'm stuck on Bo F*** sorry East Texas and also had lived there for 10 years back and forth; this ex of mine loved me still does but I did not marry him. I stuck with my last 3 husbands in Texas where I knew I could divorce (self) within 2 months and after an abusive first marriage and 5 beautiful children (one died in a MVA three years ago and my heart breaks forever but it is so since we are airing laundry here)...

This wench at SSA then was hoping today I'd say well you need to continue my checks and you never gave me 30 days notice before pocketing oh the separate issue (LOL) is the OVERPAYMENT for $65,000. My WC is 100% medical for life for over 20 years they have NOT yes NOT paid mileage so when I went to my deceased doc for 10 years i Houston and I lived in West Texas or over in Louisiana I'd fly in (out of pocket) and then 5 years to California. Today they saw several Duragesic boxes actually with the famous docs name and addresses (the old 100's and 75's which normally I was on 80 and 80 a month for LA liquid sln oxycodone, Ritalin, Xanax, B12 injectable, Premarin and other hormones for Mr. Famous believes HORMONES are going to cure pain well bring it), and in 5 years 21 visits you figure the math. In August I WON THAT ONE and now writing a legal brief for appeal; the Attorney General who I always win against did the appeal just because the Judge demanded a panel within 30 days and she figured part of the mileage--I asked for full review for she had not looked at actual visits (which I obtained) and am asking lowest round trip air and rental car for the California trips which to me was $600 per trip).

Now I have made my last cut back that I am living through in May which is 33% and I can't go lower without death or taking my life so I die in dignity.

I do not want to give up but how many battles does one smart b**** fight and not give in?

The physicians are COWARDS and I have no respect for a one of them right now. The FDA mandate is NOT law or regulation it's a strong suggestion due to ADDICTS who obtained our pain medications and died of OD's. There is not even 1% of legitimate pain patients who died of OD's. Further those like me who had the compound issue of California (and Jerry Brown once AG now governor who shuts down pharmacies and sued manufacturer's of diabetic and BP medications not to mention opioids) passing new regulations so out of state patients were released (30 of us) from the famous Dr. T. and when a regular pain specialist sees records of someone like me they want to run away chicken s*** and crying.

Well until the physicians who care for us stand up together as we do and do the next right thing we will die one by one or in mass. If all that is left are mild to moderate painers then next the medications we use for LA will go first--off the market there are forced shortages now due to Odumma which did what he wanted INCREASED retail prices to the point of insanity making it harder for you to obtain these medications and for some of us again to die from withdrawal induced MI's, CVA's and renal failure.

When I made my last cut I went into CRF which I have not suffered when Dr. Famous got me stable post P450 diagnostics so he got a DNA blue print of what works for my body and my category. I am so bad I have dual DNA markers (not solo double) that are dysfunctional "ultra rapid opioid metabolizer."

I am after almost 8 months down to the last medications and do not want CRF or blood in the u/a or these local rural hospitals who do not even examine you they just type in a note and discharge you. Remember Odumma has it now so if you have chronic pain an ER will not treat you as you will be told "see your GP for a new PM doctor." You will be billed over $10,000 for no treatment, maybe a u/a, and a CBC or Chem 7 (panel of bloodwork), I did not let them do a CT for if I have stones it will show on a KUB so I told them do that. I had not been in an ER in 7 years but when I took comp to the court house the dingbat who is not a nurse but signs checks said "Only ER" well like I said guys I won this in August and the employer is still hedging. They object to Dr. Famous talking about dental erosion and dental bills for clean up but they cannot so that is why I stick to it.

Now that baby should be getting SSD as well if you have to go to another SSA office in another town or if on state lines cross the border. You cannot get an official appointment but do what I do you can walk in sign in on PC and hit other. Make sure you have your SS card and a photo ID and refile the claim.

If I were stronger I'd help you when I did my 10,000 referrals they included countries like India who ban opioids. My best case was a mother of 4 young kids who had an evaluation with dye involved leading to horrible arachnoiditis. She was waiting for the time to commit suicide. In India you are lucky if they hit you with ANTIPSYCHOTICS for pain for you will be a raving psycho when not treated for pain. Her husband had found my information, I got her history in detail, I reviewed her medical tests, and was able (and they had MONEY mind you so they were lucky) to get her set up in England for pain management. Husband had to get a townhouse out there which he did immediately; he was a business man and flew out directly and set this up, and I got her in and morphine changed her life. For most with that disorder morphine might not touch the pain but imagine having nothing more than aspirin she was hunched up in a wheelchair before we got her help in England and they restrained her arms and feet in order she not kill her self. She also at the time had a 3 month old new baby who she could not feed or hold she (due to pain) had lost life and no longer wanted to live. Last I heard she was up and about and smiling. Her kids and husband have a mother and wife again.

Why did I do all this support for all those years? Well they did not run diagnostics for P450 and I lived with suicidal pain had the top doctor but I was still in pain regardless of medication. It progressed so badly my cortisol levels caused constant fight or flight response and this over years progressed to the brain and Central Pain Syndrome. I will carry that one to the grave no cure only pain management.

I said to Dr. Famous "why do the damn evaluation if the DEA and now FDA do not give a rats ass or a flying F?" He shook his head and I realized he just cared about his statistics. He evaluated 300 of us rare ones and all of us had a dysfunction only 2 had my category which is 100% eastern or western european women (white).

Enough said people I love you all. Say a prayer. I cannot see a doctor in Louisiana that I liked the sounds of without ID in LA. I can get a state ID but when if I am sitting in SSA, writing legal briefs to protect my medical award and trying to line up a physician to replace Dr. Famous.

F this I say (sigh)..
