How many years will oxycodone tablets last and still be good to take?

Well the latest box I got from the pharmacy (original brand-name, not generic) tells me that my 40mg OxyContin was made in May 2007 and expiry is May 2010, so we can assume three years although pills are normally pretty well OK for a year or so after the printed expiry date in my experience.

To add some specifics and explain the reason for the different expiration dates, such as Michael mentioned….

If they are in the original, factory sealed container, so they aren't exposed to the elements that cause degradation, such as heat, light and moisture, then they have a 3 year shelf-life.

However, once that container has been opened, so they have been exposed to the elements, degradation starts and they only have a shelf-life of one year. Most don't turn dangerous after that year is up, but they do lose potency over time, due to molecular breakdown.

And this only applies to tablets, all liquids and some capsules have different shelf lives.
