Overfilling A Prescription

Updated

I went to the pharmacy today to fill mine and my husband's prescriptions. When I was looking at all the scripts, I realized that my husband's script had more then usual. Now here's the thing- He is prescribed 30 10mg ambien a month but the insurance will only cover 15 for him. His bottle had 30 in but the qty on the bottle said 15 and I only paid the insurance prem for the 15. Now I dont know what to do- He is prescribed the 30 I picked up but I only paid for 15- should I contact the pharmacy since it is a controlled substance? I know they cant make me return them, but I specificly told them today to only fill what the insurance would pay for- I want to inform them of there error but I dont want to be forced to pay $30 for it.

Hello,

In my opinion, if you just want to do the "right thing" I would call the pharmacy and let them know about the error and simply ask them what your options are. They can't force you to pay for their mistake, so I imagine will just take back 15 of the pills and either destroy them or send them back to the manufacturer. I'm not sure if keeping the extra pills would create a legal issue of any sort since whoever made the mistake should be held liable- not you, but for the sake of a guilt free conscience I would just speak with them directly.

I hope this helps! Please post back if you have any questions or information to add.

His prescription is actually for the amount they gave me this time, I have only been having them fill 1/2 because that is what the insurance covers- so since he is actually prescribed the amount they gave me, I dont see the need to give them back- its not that they gave me extra- its more that they didnt charge me for them that I am worried about.

Hello again,

I apologize for misinterpreting your post! It's always better to be upfront and honest. If your intuition is telling you that you should contact the pharmacy and let them know about their mistake then that's what you should do. I would just take in the prescription, receipt, and whatever documentation you have and let them know exactly what happened. If you don't, they may never notice what happened and their mistake will be your gain- but it's always important to have a good trusting relationship with your pharmacists so that they can better assist you in the future.
