is Soma considered an opioid?

No. It isn't related in any way to opioids. It is related to an ancient tranquilliser called meprobamate which was widely used in the 1950s but hardly at all since benzodiazepines hit the market. Another name for carisoprodol is ISOMEPROBAMATE. An amount of your Soma/Carisoma is metabolised by the liver into meprobamate so as well as being a superb muscle relaxant it does have a slight tranquillising effect. Barely noticeable though it does tend to potentiate the triazolo-benzos like alprazolam.
I wonder where the notion that it was an opioid came from? That's one I never heard before!

soma is not a opiate, IN FACT IN THE USA IT IS NOT EVEN A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE!. i never understood what all the hype was about, they only putt me to sleep. BUT your body metabolizes them into a substance that has a high affinity to you opiate receptors in your brain, lots of things connect to your opiate receptors not just opiates, but your body KINDA treats them like an opiate

Jason @ Post # 2. Soma is absolutely now a Schedule 4 controlled substance (like Xanax) and has been so for about 2 years.

Soma (carisoprodol, isomeprobamate) is a CARBAMOL and is BANNED in almost all countries, has been since 2007. I think only India, USA, S Africa and Argentina still allow its use. I get mine from Argentina as it is the only drug that helps me and I am unable to use any legal muscle relaxant because of interactions with drugs I am taking. Using it as a potentiator can be dangerous, as I should have known. Meprobamate is not yet banned but is recommended to be withdrawn shortly.

And if I could just add Soma is not a superb muscle relaxant. Sure it works good but has little therapeutic properties, thus Doctors hate prescribing it

I never had a problem in getting it prescribed before it was banned; yes, the doctors said that there was no actual clinical or pharmacological evidence that it worked as claimed, but I consider that my own experience constitutes clinical evidence! Seeing as NOTHING else works, I am now resigned to buying from India (poor quality except Wallace Carisoma, the same brand that used to be dispensed on the NHS) or Argentina, where the export of medications is now banned but where I have a friendly doctor who used to prescribe for me when he was domiciled in the EU, who sends me the expensive but best brand available, Finadiet Listaflex.

It HAS been proven to have good muscle relaxant properties, but not as a treatment for lumbar pain; an EU regulation permits its prescription for CRONIC but not acute lumbar muscular issues. Acquisition though is a huge problem, as to my knowledge, there are no wholesalers left who keep stocks of carisoprodol.
