Ok For Age 73

Updated

At age 46 I had complete hysterectomy and was prescribed Estratest which I continued to take until age 63. Due to bad publicity for this medication, I informed my primary care dr. that I was not continuing to take it. He did not agree and told me he was making note of "my choice" in my medical history. Now, 10 years later, I am having severe dry eye problems and am allergic to Restasis. No optical meds for relief are available...over the counter eye meds give no relief. My son suggested that I get back on Estratest. Since I have had a complete hysterectomy, and other major medical issues, what is the risk to getting back on Estratest???

Hello, Jan! How are you?

The risks are the same as always, when using HRT, it can cause blood clots, that could lead to heart attack or stroke and it raises your risk of certain types of cancer.

Other side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability, as listed by the FDA.

However, it may not solve your dry eye problem. Only yur doctor can get to the root of what's causing that and help you discover what might solve it.

Is there anything else I can help with?

HRT is not the only med that that can cause side effects which include clots, heart attacks and CANCER, I know women in their 80s that been taking it for 50 years and they are heather and happier that most people I know that don't use HRT. Maybe you should read up more on the HRT. It's now a poison, our bodies need certain hormones to keep us healthy especially if you have no ovaries!

Women who still have their ovaries and go though a natural menopause, their bodies will continue to produce small amounts of estrogen as it's declines slowly as we age, into our 80s Our ovaries work synergistically with the rest of our hormones and when that tie is broken it can cause havoc on our bodies. I personally, don't think that women with no ovaries should not be on any hormones if they want to stir clear of aliments that hit us when we age, ie, arthritis, bad vision, reseeding gums, dry eye, dry skin, thinning or falling hair, depression, anxiety, insomnia, IBS, Fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism and other auto immune issues. So if someone thinks that not taking HRT is going to keep you from getting a clot or heart attack, I rather take my chances as I know I will die of something eventually. If my life is cut off by 2 years because I take HRT, I will choose the HRT and a better quality of life.

I would go the hystersisters web site and you will see women talking about their issues with hysterectomies and you will see you don't have to be without HRT and miserable with your symptoms because you are worried you might die.

I agree. I had a botched complete hysterectomy at age 44, and been contributing numerous medical declines since. I never needed glasses, but at age 45 need tri-focal. My memory deteriorated quickly, my skin dried out, no libido, bladder cancer, arthritis, and other joint pain.
My doctor has been attempting to discontinue my use due to cancer scares and "controlled" drug status. I take the generic every other day at age 62.
