Nerve Damage, Nerve Medication, Oxycodo-apap 10-325 Tab Pain Medication

Updated

After very careful consideration and research, I made the decision with my dentist to have a total dental extraction on June 5 2013 and have 4 surgical steel implants inserted in the top into my mandible and 4 inserted into my jaw and temporary dentures screwed into until the healing was done and then go through 5 session of having the temporary dentures removed, molds of the "perfect" dentures made and finally permanent dentures inserted. On June 9th, 2013 I got the sinus infection from hell. I called the dentist and he prescribed an antibiotic. At the time of the extraction he prescribed oxycodo-apap 10-325 tab (mallinckro) a generic for Percocet 10-325 tab. I actually have had very little pain in the area of the extraction (the gums) and from the implants or dentures. The pain has been from sinus infections and ear infections and pain from my mandible and jaw. The sinus infection did not got away and by Sept 2013 I had been to the ENTs 4 times and ER twice for infections and "trying" to explain the constant pain from my mandible and jaw. I actually took very few pain pills as I "don't" like pain pills and relied on ibuprofen, herbal teas and herbal poultices to manage the pain. In September they finally did a cat scan and I had "NO" sign of any sinus or ear infection...but still had the mandible/jaw pain. The ENTs and ER doctors decided I had nerve damage. My dentist was furious as there was no way her claimed that the extraction could cause nerve damage. As everything was healed we proceeded with the sessions of removing the temporary dentures, making molds and replacing the temps until the next session. Each session was 2 to 2 1/2 hours of sitting patiently with my mouth wide open. Each time within 1 to 4 days I did get a real sinus/ear infection, went back to ENT for antibiotics and waited for the infection to clear up to go through another dental session and repeat. The mandible/jaw pain continued and my dentist could not grasp what I was telling him about the constant pain. March 10th I suffered a panic attack so bad that I was hospitalized for a heart attack and had every examination possible. Heart was just fine and they decided that yes, I was just having panic and prescribed major medication. Finally while in the hospital I got a Nurse to "finally" listen to me about the whole dental thing and the mandible/jaw pain and a doctor prescribed nerve pain medication which has helped but is just not enough to get rid of the pain. Two weeks ago I finally had my permanent dentures inserted and as unusual got a sinus/ear infection but the dentist refused to prescribe any more antibiotics as he said a person can become immune to them. The ENTs have basically given up on my sinus/ear infections and say all my pain is nerve damage. So I am on nerve pain medication, ibuprofen, musanex, Sudafed, eardrops, nasal sprays, every herbal remedy available, have tried acupuncture and have taken the oxycodo-apap I was given at the initial extraction when I absolutely cannot stand the pain any more. The dentist, the ENTs, the ER, and doctors I have seen will not prescribe pain killers as I am going through one major hospital here and it is their "policy" not to prescribe pain killers and use pain management techniques/methods. I have tried everything....meditation, massage, therapy....on and on and I have gotten NO permanent relief. They do not know I had literally held on to the pain killers I received at the time of the extraction for "dear life" and have taken the few /I have left only when I can't take it anymore.

I am at my wits end.....the nerve pain medication eases the pain as does everything else but nothing takes it away and no one understands the pain I feel as it seems that each....the dentist, the ENTs, the doctors...want to pass "the buck" so to speak to the other. I am at a loss as to what to do. Is there a specialists I should see? IS there someone who will prescribe a nerve pain medication or pain pill I can take to over come the pain or to survive it?

I live in the Boulder, Colorado area. I have talked to every one I can think of, as I has stated dealt with my dentist, ENTs, the ER, Hospital doctors. I have researched on my on everything I can about nerve damage and especially as it relates to dental extraction and can find no treatment information.

I do not like taking pain killers and have only taken them as I have said when it is sooooo bad. I now have 5 left that I am hanging on to but I also can not take this pain anymore..............

So what do I do? Who do I need to see? What can I take? How do I get rid of the pain? Do I need to have the dentures and implants permanently removed to be rid of the pain and will it relieve the nerve pain. This has totally changed my life to the point it is a disability situation.

Hello, Lyssa! How are you doing? I am very sorry about the problems that you're having.

Actually, what I would suggest is that you see another dentist that specializes in dental implants for a second opinion. There are nerves in your mouth that can cause these types of problems if your dentures are resting on them, or if one of the implant screws is touching a nerve. The solution could be as simple as a slight adjustment to your dentures or one of the implant screws.

I am saying this from experience, by the way, I have had full dentures for over 2 years and if they are sitting crooked in my mouth, I can experience that type of pain, but it will go away, once I adjust them. But a dentist is only going to be able to help you, if they accept that their could be a problem going on due to the implants, which is why I said to see a different dentist.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Oh thank you for your post. I am feeling so alone on this.....I had researched every combination I can for extraction and nerve damage.

I am going to consult another dentist.....this is just awful. I am going to take your advice and thank you so very much!

Why would I have such pain in both mandible and jaw? Would the implants hitting just one nerve cause this pain?

I had the temporary dentures removed and replaced 5 times as molds were made for the permanent and there was no decrease in pain by adjustments and now have permanent dentures in and ......excuse me...but God my mandible and jaw are killing me and I just can't take going back in and sitting for 2+ hours with my mouth open.

I really think it is the implants.....but the surgeon and dentist just will not budge that they could be causing me problems. It will be one year June 5th that I have dealt through this!

I have had a fall which resulted in a fractured hip 12 months ago. I also have scolitis of the spine. My hip is still painful but bearable however I have now been diagnosed with peripheral nerve pain. My feet burn so badly I almost cannot bear it another day, my back (lower) & hip pain is always there, sometimes worse than others. I am on Jurnista & panadol, my doctor is not forthcoming with pain killers, yet my specialist is. I am almost 73 & frankly sometimes feel I simply cannot take another day of this pain, depression, panic attacks & extreme anxiety (on anti depressant & Karma for these) I am also prone to attacks of ischemic colitis although it has been about 9 years since the last. My doctor said it was ok to take OTC pain killers as well as the Jurnista, so I am taking about 6 of those also daily. No , my doctor seems not to think it can b as chronically painful as it is & he more or less laughs at the burning feet (which in themselves) can drive me crazy. I have BP under control (slight BP) & cholesterol meds (it is also under control).
I have my own home fully paid for & make for on my income, my husband passed away 2 years back & I lost my daughter (to my first marriage) when I was 46, she was 17. I have just existed since then. I am really ready to leave this world, I have my faith (Catholic) but then I am afraid of the dying process. Although on really bad days, I am not at all, I just have to get away from the pain. Thank you ( I am Australian)
