Need Help Getting Off Oxycontin

Updated

This is the first time in my life I have asked for help. That is probably why I'm asking on a website and not family or friends. I have been doing oxy for about a year or so and I want to stop. I'm 21 and want to get a hold of myself before it's too late. I only do about 1 80 mg pill a day but it's an expensive habit and it's not worth it. I need it when I wake up or I just feel terrible. Who should I talk to I have a doctor but he is short with me. I have only seen him twice and I want to pick a new one. I'm located near Sacramento California. If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Hello Angelo,
OxyContin is definitely a drug of habituation. My recommendation would be a pain management specialist or internal medicine physician to help with your medical problem. There are other medications out there that will help you and other physicians, as well. Many care providers do not deal well with what they consider to be drug-seeking behavior. It's unfortunately, because it sounds like you are very sincere. Like Gregg said, hang in there and keep trying until you find the physicain who can help you. He or she is out there. God Bless!

I live in Maryland & am a nurse and work with doctors who do additions. It sounds like you have an opiod addition and there is help available to you. You need to go on the web and look up SUBOXONE and on their site they will give you doctors names in your area who can prescribe suboxone also you can use methadone but this is also addictive we have had a great sucess with this drug just check it out

spread your doses out further apart. my doc is doing that for me on pain killers also because I wanted to stop but my body is now dependant on them. I have been on mine for 9 months. good luck ,,,, you SHOULD seek another doc you feel more comfortable with and talk to them. I think it may be easier to talk to someone new.......GOOD LUCK ,,,and also N.A. could possibly help you for support and people to talk to that have been through similar things.....

Greetings Angelo,
Been there, done it and successfully got off the stuff.
There is not only hope but great joy ahead for you. I went to a pain management center for 4 years. They had me on several serious pain meds to include morphine, zanax, blah, blah, blah you get the idea. What happens with pain mgmt. centers is that they get you on the stuff. They DO NOT explain to you that after a period of time you develop a tolerance (as with oxy) that will cause for an increase in dosage, or worse yet, they will then add a 'break through' pain medication (furthering your physical dependance). After a while, the pain gets worse and as always happens with these drugs they quantify with will increase your quality of life, is depression sets in. You can't take enough for the pain because the tolerance tops off, then they drop you as a patient and your left to go through what can be for some, life threatening withdrawls. This is what I went through and it's by the grace of God that I survived it.
As I began with, there is hope. I went to an addiction specialist PHD, and he put me on Suboxine. Within an hour, my withdrawls and symptoms disappeared. I stayed on it, reduces its amount as he layed out, for a month and a half.
I'll never touch it again. OR go to a pain management center. They come off caring yet do not help you get off it.
I now take tramadol and lyrica, and have gone from 4 years on the couch, near lifeless, to an active and normal lifestyle. Depression...gone.
I also take a combination of supplemnts/minerals/herbs. I've never had such energy and for years I've suffered from Chronic Fatique Syndrome. If you want further info on what it is I take, please email me at [email protected]. I do not sell /market or distribute them, merely have referred people and seen miraculous changes in their pain.
Good luck to you and your great future ahead.
Susan

Angelo,
First I want to tell you, in my opinion, it took a TON of courage to post this! There is no easy way to get off OXY especially if you have been purchasing it without a Rx. I understand what you are going through and have had a difficult time with this myself. Not so much the stopping of the OXY but just the entire Rx situation. I took myself off OXY after a so called "Pain management doctor" told me to cut extended release tablets in order to wean myself off of them. Needless to say, common sense told me that was not a really great idea and I just started taking less and less each day or would wait until I couldn't stand it anymore and then take one. Finally, I just got so sick of it, I flushed what I had. I fortunately, had a Rx for Percocet (which is the same medicine as Oxy but it is "short acting" and only lasts about 4 hours. I still experienced a day or 2 in bed and it totally sucked but that was the worst of it!
Now, I am also in the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. I have been for several years. I did just get of the phone with my sponsor that has 20 years sober and confirmed that it was totally acceptable that I write this e-mail using AA in the information. My support system and anyone that has heard me share on this knows my medical situation. I did not get sober to be in pain. I take my medication AS PRESCIBED ONLY BECAUSE IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. I am also waiting for approval from my insurance company, for a procedure to fix my problem. My goal is to not HAVE to take any narcotic medication at all. With all that being stated. I want you to know that there is a way out of this hell! IF and only IF you truly want it. The first thing I had to do was admit that I had a problem and that I could not take care of it alone. This is the most difficult step to take. You have already done part of the 1st step of the AA. This is truly a miracle in itself and you are a miracle also. I would be happy to share my experience, strength and HOPE with you about this IF you want me to. You have asked for help - and I can tell you this
The only thing that I know if life that is 100% guaranteed, no doubt in my mind whatsoever is this:
Rarely have I seen a person fail that has thoroughly followed AA; those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not COMPLETELY give themselves to this simple program. Usually men and woman who are constitutional incapably of being honest with themselves.
If you have decided you want we have and are willing to go to ANY length to get it, then you are ready to take these steps - you have already begun to do this.by admitting your problem and asking for help. That was the hard part for me!
If you want to get help that works IF you work it .. go to www.aasacramento.org
Call the hotline
Central Office Information
24 Hour Hotline -- 916.454.1100 and read exactly what you wrote in your thread they will know what to do.
Take care of yourself, you really are worth it. If there is anything I can help you with ..please tell me!
Jolie

Good day Angelo,

Thank you for the courage you showed in your post. It does take courage to admit you have a problem and please know there are many people out there looking to help.
My best suggestions, as someone who has gone through similar issues and come out the other side is to seek help as the others suggested with a pain management center. They can address physical issues. Also think about seeking some counseling in the form of talk therapy as well as a support group such as Narcotics Anonymous or similar.
Many people have very real pain issues that need to be dealt with in a professional non-judgemental manner.
Many people such as myself also sought help through therapy in addition to a pain management clinic and Narcotics Anonymous.
I have been off of narcotic medication for over 15 years, and have even undergone two back surgeries without the use of narcotics.
The best advice I can give is to continue to seek the help you need until you are right in your mind and body. Use any and all methods and you will get better.
Most of all never give up. There are solutions out there so keep the faith.
