The pain pumps usually give most people better pain control and the medication is injected directly into your blood stream, so they also work much faster for pain relief.

The FDA classifies this medication as being a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Ultimately the decision is up to you. You may want to set up an appointment with your doctor to discuss all of the pros and cons, so you are better informed and better equipped to weigh your options.

Does anyone have a pain pump, who can chime in with information?

I am looking for a doctor in Las Vegas that manages the morphine pump the only one my insurance adjuster from workers comp will send me to says i can no longer take oral meds even though they are not given to me for my back,I have a 40 plus year history of TMJ headaches with swelling in the artery as well as the joint. The pain managment doctor i have is the only doctor in all those years that has come up with the right combo of meds to help my headaches but the new doctor they want to manage the pump say no oral meds and in fact say he will take care of the pump but since its a workers comp case will only take care of the pump leaving me with no meds to take care of the tmj migraine which is way way to light a term for what i have going on.My insurance company will not approve Botox and even if they did at a copay of $535.00 i have no way to affore the cost every 3 months for the botox .If anyone knows of a pain mgt doctor in Las Vegas thats not Dr.Kozmary i am begging for the name of the doctor.

The morphine is injected via the catheter directly into the spinal fluid not into the blood stream which is why it works so much better for pain and has fewer narcotic affects I.e.,
Euphoric feeling from drugs. The purpose of the pump is to put the medications right where it will immediately have the best affect thereby mostly eliminating the need for oral meds.

I've been around pump patients since it came out back in the late 1990's. Most doctors who jumped on the pain pump bandwagon back then no longer mess with them. It's hard to find a doctor who will fill them because of the expense. Patients can't afford the expensive co-pays for the pump fills whether it's morphine, hydromorphone, fentanyl or other solutions. And here's the bad part, you'll build a tolerance to these drugs in the pump and wind up taking oral medications again too. There's not a single pump patient that I'm around who wasn't back on oral analgesics too within 5 to 10 years. So then your paying for pump replacement around every 5 years, pump fill every month or even twice a month when your tolerance gets high and oral meds too. You'll wind up broke and on Medicaid. I've watched it first hand for many years now...

There's a reason why most pain management doctors abandoned the pumps and only a very few mess with them anymore...
The quickest tolerance from any drug comes from injecting it into your body, doesn't matter that it's in the spine and not IV or IM. The vast amount of doctors figured this out long ago and stopped doing pumps! There's actually doctors who will install the pumps, but won't fill them! That's because they lose money filling the pumps on most patients. Investigate this thoroughly before you let some doctor just put a pump in you and later find out it's extremely hard to find someone to fill them. Where I live this has become a nightmare for pump patients. The only doctors who haven't abandoned the pump are very questionable in my opinion. Because like I said, most doctors have abandoned using it!
