Morphine And Other Prescribed Meds.

Updated

Hi. I really don't know where to start but I'll give it a shot anyway. This is going to take a while so stick with me if you can. I am a 38 year old man now who was diagnosed with Osteo Chonritis Dissicans in 1986 when I was 11 year old. From the age of 23 to present day I have had 17 knee operations 10 on my right 7 on the left. I was on 100 mg voltarol a day for 17 years until last year when I went into Acute Renal Failure twice as a result of the voltarol even though id been to my gp several times before going into renal failure telling him i was not feeling well and for him to change my meds. It fell upon deaf ears. Now over the last 25 years have been on various painkillers from co dydramol, codine phosphate co codamol then my DHC dehydracodine and then tramadol. When I was admitted to hospital with A.R.F. I was put on Oxycodone 10 mg twice a day and 20 mg of Oxynorm liquid. After about 6 weeks I ended up back in my GP's office begging him to come off these as I did not know what I was doing!!! The withdrawals I experienced from these made me feel like I was dying and I ended up taking Solpadol 4 times a day to give me enough codine for the withdrawal no to hurt so bad. Now six weeks after this terrifying experience my kidneys failed a second time so I was put on Morphine 30 mg mst twice a day and 30 ml of Oramorph 10mg/5ml a day to take for breakthrough pain. I had 8 admissions to hospital last year and spent more time there than in my own home and the resultant muscle wastage and not being able to get out of bed has left me feeling weak.

For a while and sometimes now I have trouble with the 30mg mst continuous. I find they slow my gut down to the point I feel full so I have no appetite. at this moment in time I am prescribed mst, oramorph, mebeverine hydrochloride, movicol, omeprazole, cyclazine, paracetamol and Aymes drink shakes for my weight loss. As I have walked with such a gait for the last 25 years I have been told that I have osteo arthritis in my hips and lower back and just last week my wrists. I have used crutches to get round for 20 plus years not all the time but most of it and now my wrists keep giving out and now I find I have completely lost my independence. I have been to several physio sessions and then get Phlebitis (swollen legs) really painful so the get cancelled and the whole process starts again. I can honestly say my life has been turned upside down and inside out. I have been on long term sick for years. Then just yesterday yep Sunday 23.03.2014. I had an appointment with a pain control team at my local hospital they gave me Amyltriptaline and wanted me to reduce the morphine. I took one last night and was sick within 15 mins of taking it until 1pm today. I will not be taking another one of these. I really cant afford to lose any more weight from vomiting. I can understand that I am young and they are trying to get me as a functioning human being again but the pain is so severe that I am physically crying myself awake in the mornings. I told the pain team all this but they are expecting me to be able to get to 2 maybe 3 physio and hydro sessions a week and I'm not driving at the moment and my nearest bus stop is about half a mile away. If I could get there I wouldn't need physio you know what I mean. I really have hit rock bottom to the point where I have become a social recluse.

Hours turn to days to weeks and so on. For the pain I've tried tens machines heat pads hot baths . all give slight pain relief. I have been on the pain management course the local health department is running. Its worth doing if its only to know your not the only one with problems. The morphine helps but I think I have built a tolerance to it so its not as effective as when i first had it. I was given a drug called lyrica for a while and that made me miss days of my life so the was not the one for me. I know i need to be on something alongside the morphine now but after yesterdays and his mornings escapade i not sure its Amyltriptaline either. I wish my GP would give me enough time for me to tell them how it is... The care and help i received in hospital was brilliant. from nurses, doctors to dieticians. but nothing since coming out of hospital. I live alone and struggle with simple tasks like cleaning trying to get my food from kitchen to table without throwing it everywhere. i given up with the tea and usually drink it next to the kettle where i made it. My advice to anyone taking prescribed meds is do you really need it because one lot of meds might have side effect. then youll find youll be prescribed something else to combat the side effects of that and so on until you'll have a list of meds you never really needed but have come dependant on. I think this has covered most of my life now so ill shut up.
