Metoprolol & Hair Loss (Page 5)

Updated

I have been taking 200 mg. a day for about 4 years. I thought it was a coincidence that I've lost 50% of my hair during this time because I am also going through menopause. I just found out that it is possible the hair loss is caused by metoprolol, so my doctor just wrote me a RX for a different drug. Will my hair grow back? It was very long, down to my waist, but I've been cutting it to compensate for the thinness. I just touch my head and lose a few hairs! Any ideas?

Thanks for this info. My mother had super thick hair until she took heart meds. I have been on metropolol since Decemeber and my super thick hair is falling out majorly. Not that I will miss some hair loss. I've always hated my thick, thick hair, but I remember my mother. Glad to know there is an alternative medication.

Omg , I can relate, i went to the ER awhile back , my blood pressure was a high, so they admitted me to run other tests, 2 days and they started me on metropolol, some Internal medic doc, so after I got out I told my primary doctor , he did'nt say much, just to keep taking it...during the following months the hair loss started and thinning, dry brittle hair, so damaged...also chronic insomnia...... changed doctors and he took me off the metropolol just yesterday. Hope everything changes....why thes doctors don't tell patients about side effects>>..

Been taking metoprolol for 36 days and I lost about half my hair, the Doctor had be on 50mg er once a day. the hair loss was sudden. I stopped taking the metoprolol and praying I get my hair back, It is devastating and Doctors are jerks about it. I am so mad that he denied that this side effect happens.

If he said , well yes this happens at times and showed some compassion, i would be better with this, Instead it is the whole deny and blame game. My wonder hair dresser and has offered a free haircut (because this just happened) for free to help me make it look some what normal.

I am going to take biotin, and drink plenty of good high quality whey protein and assorted supplements I need anyway.

I have been going through and still am a Klonopin taper and the beta blocker was prescribed for anxiety! And I asked for it! Boy I am really mad at myself!

I posted before that I was taking this beta blocker for 36 day sand my hair started to fall. I tapered off and I take Losarton (generic) brand name Cozzar for high blood pressure and my hair is growing back. It is about an inch now and the top went first, then the sides then finally the back. So my regrowth is longer on the top and shorter on the back.

I also wanted to add that years ago I took metoprolol at 25mg and did not have this, at 50mg it happened if that makes any sense. I took no other medication during either times.

The remaining hair is dry and crazy looking. But at least it is growing.
I do take biotin 10mg and Vitamin D. I don't get any special shampoos as I tried in the beginning and it made no difference, I do use a leave in conditioner spray on my dry hair and wet hair, I wash my hair every 3 days and sometimes 4.

I find that when you get some regrowth the oil starts to come back and I use the leave in spray less on my dry hair.

Good leave in sprays in my opinion is "Its a10" and at Sallys "One and Only Brazilian Tech Keratin leave in treatment" is is a spray and it works just as well as the expensive "its a 10"

Also "It's a 10" deep conditioning mask or at Sally's Ion repair solution which also works as well as the "its a 10" and the price difference is great.

Please know that even small doses of Metoprolol Succinate can cause hair loss. BUT IT DOESN'T ALWAYS MANIFEST RIGHT AWAY. It took a year and a half for me.

I was taking only 25 mg. a day, the smallest dose available. I was very tired. And although I take my blood pressure daily, I did not pay attention to my PULSE. One day, at a routine doctor's visit, the nurse noticed that my pulse was only 40! The doctor had known this, seeing the results of my BP and pulse test at each visit, but never said a world. I asked him if the Metoprolol could cause the low pulse and he said "definitely." So we cut the dose in half. Then my pulse improved to 62.

I noticed small bunches of hair in the shower drain about 9 months ago. And my hair, although always fine, was now baby fine. And it started coming out when I combed it and actually breaking off in my fingers.

I saw a dermatologist who ordered thyroid tests and my thyroid is fine. So I returned to my regular doctor and told him of the hair loss. He said the medical literature does not include much, that such hair loss is "rare" but that a male patient had experienced hair loss while on this med, did his own research and voila!

Apparently, many people are suffering this, as this website proves.

As long as my palpitations are no worse and my blood pressure is good, I will stay off the Metoprolol. If not, I'll have to take it or a substitute (although everything in this class of drugs has the same side effects.) My heart is more important than my hair, but as a woman, it is devastating.

So I stopped the Metoprolol about two months ago. I'm still experiencing the same hair loss and, although the literature says it is reversible, I'll just have to see.

Also, I had taken Lisinopril for a year and had a slight cough, but the worse effect was the sense of constant irritation in my chest, like it was filled with smoke. That problem is gone after I stopped taking it.

The doctors do the best they can with the drugs available. Science isn't perfect. Most drugs have side effects. But I agree that they should give patients more complete warnings about side effects and also take more seriously our reports of them.

Get off coffee, I have had heart palpitations, on and off for years. Driving during the day, and my heart rate would suddenly be up there, or some times at night, for no reason.

I quit Coffee and have been off coffee, for about 8 months now (decaf water process is all I drink) and my heart is steady as a rock, day and night, week in, week out. I only drank one mug a day (16oz) strong not that much, but enough to affect my heart. But let me tell you, my anxiety is gone, and that rapid, erratic, never know when, heat beats are gone. My heart beat is steady now. Get off Coffee.

I am on the same meds. I was placed on it for having terrible migraines and blood pressure. I have been taking these meds since May of this year. Oh boy my hair has thinned out significantly and I have 2 huge bald spots on each side of my head. I stopped taking meds on my own for 3 days.
My question to you is did your hair ever grow back?

Wow! I have been taking the Metoprolol Succinate for about 7 years now. I was becoming alarmed because I noticed so many long strands of hair in the sink when I would comb it out after shampooing. Thought maybe it was just age related, or maybe from another medication. Now it all makes sense after reading these many posts. When I mentioned it to my dr he put me on a high dose of vitamin D once a week, said that was probably reason for hair loss. Not much difference, I still am losing a lot of hair when I wash or brush it. I will definitely mention this to him and see if I can take something else for rapid pulse and high BP!

My hair never stopped falling out until I was off the drug meteprolol ....... An now four months later I have noticed I am not losing much now..... In fact I have new growth....

So it takes 4 months to notice hair growth after being off of this meds?
Are you noticing your hair is the same texture as before? Or is it growing in very thin?

I think like most new hair growth it is baby fine in the beginning...... I am hoping that in time it will get thicker like the rest.... I know it's not easy to go through and I believe only a change of meds will stop it...... I had lost about 50% in a matter of two months and when your hair is long like mine it is very easy to notice...... There is another drug in the same classification that does the same thing .....it's called diltiazem..... I am on max dose and my hair loss has stopped to an acceptable "normal" amount.......

I have just been so frustrated with my hair that I made an appointment with a dermatologist for hair loss and scalp to see if I can reverse this.
Well the doctor noticed black dots around my hair follicles which causes inflammation on my scalp. She said meds can cause this and stress on the hair from heat.
The good thing is that my hair follicle it's active if it was smooth like skin no hair follicle it will be hard to reverse.
She placed me on the regiment so we can get this process rolling in growing back my hair. It seems that beta blockers is doing harm to my hair not my health. She asked me to have my doctor to switch me to a different type of blood pressure pill.
She written me 3 prescriptions:
1. for scalp oil to use twice a day
2. A shampoo
3. antibiotic to take daily to release the inflammation off of my scalp
I feel better now knowing that my hair has a chance for regrowth its been very depressing. It's going to be a process she's thinking between six months to a year. Hope this helps a little.
