Metformin Use For

Updated

Taking 850 mgs metformin but isnt working to lower blood sugar. Blood sugar readings now in low 300's. Recent bump by Dr. From 500mg to 850mg. Have reduced food intake, fruits, starches etc. But not much difference in results. Readings are before meals. What are other options as far as medications to take to help the metformin?

Hello, Uvaldo! How are you doing? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having.

As to your food intake, have you also reduced the amount of sweets overall and fats that you take in? According to various research papers on diabetes, fats can coat the cells and prevent their absorption of insulin, which elevates your blood sugar levels. You can really eat as much enough to feel full and satisfied, it just has to be of healthy, low-fat and low-sugar foods.

Exercise can also help greatly.

There are also other oral medications available, such as those listed by the NIH, which include Glimepiride and Glyburide, there are even some that combine more than one drug into one pill. Typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, stomach pain, flatulence and hypoglycemia.

Is there anything else I can help with?

There is a natural supplement called Gymnema sylvestri that will help keep your blood sugar down. You can find it at Sprouts. Also you might want to try resveratrol to keep your hunger under control. These I take along with Metformin because it wasn't doing enough.

Another drug was mentioned started with Gly-something... a lesser known but important side affect is that you must stay OUT of the sun.

I think it is shameful that MDs are not trained in nutrition and rely on pharmaceuticals to treat symptoms rather than try to cure the disease. Especially since it was/is lack of good nutrition that causes diabetes.
