Levothyroxine And Vision Loss

Updated

Hi everyone,

I am curious if anyone has experienced intermittent vision loss while being on levothyroxine. For about two months now my vision in my left eye will randomly disappear for 2-3 seconds and then slowly dissipate back to normal. I've been through a litany of exams -- retinal, cardiovascular, MRI/MRA -- that are all coming back clear and now we're wondering if it could be the medications I am on. I am also on humalog, lisinopril and Simvastin. Has anyone experienced symptoms like this with levothyroxine?

Hello, Julia! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having.

Looking over your list of mediations, there is a chance that it might be due to the Simvastatin, according to the FDA, it has been known to cause several vision issues, which usually go away, once someone stops taking it. Other side effects may include nausea, headache, dizziness and joint/muscle aches. Thus, you may need to switch to a different medication and see if this goes away.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Yes, it is the Levothyroxine or Synthroid that you are on. After my thyroidectomy, I was put on Levo. One night my friend and I were out at a restaurant. When I went to get out of the chair, I literally could not stand up. My body had gone into full blown muscle spasms. He almost carried me out to the car. When I told my endo she laughed and told me that my TSH score told me that everything was where it should be. Not true. TSH is not the only score that determines your real numbers and how they should be. Everyone is different. You should be getting a TSH, T3 free and a T4 reading. Doctors who rely on levo and synthroid don't bother to do all of these evaluations. Go to a bookstore and buy the book called STOP THE THYROID MADNESS VOLUME 1 AND 2. Good luck to you.

Have you been to an Optamologist? That- would be where I would go first.
I hope your better now. aybe the side effects of the other drugs you're taking with levoxine are causing this. speak to your Pharmacist, too.

Levothyroxine is not giving your body everything that it needs to function properly. I had a thyroidectomy in 2010. Afterwards my endo put me on levothyroxine. I almost died. My whole body went into muscle spasms. Everything was wrong. When I called her and told her what was happening, she said that I was imagining it, that my numbers were right where they needed to be. I told her that she was no longer my doctor. I searched the internet and luckily found the thyroid group. I learned just what was going on and searched for a doctor that would put me on natural thyroid hormone. I am now on Naturethroid and my body is getting everything that my own thyroid gave me. When your body doesn't get what it needs to survive, your body systems are not getting what your own body gave you. Endocrinologists put you on T4 only medicine, which is what Levothyroxine is. The body needs T2, 3 and 4. T4 is the energy hormone and the body cannot operate properly without it. Go to the book store and get volumes 1 and 2 of STOP THE THYROID MADNESS, written by a person who suffered for years on Levothyroxine and Synthroid.

Have you spoken with your Pharmacist? He might have a clue.
