@Nelle: well i guess there might be a chance that your body would react differently this time considering certain variables as changes in body mass (more body fat, more estrogen stored), stress levels (changing cortisol levels), physical activity etc. which you didn't have 7 years ago...anyhow, these should be minor and hopefully negligible...if your period gets delayed this time even if you take your pills on schedule then it probably is due to these little changes that happened to your body through those last 7 years. If it arrives on time, then well and good. :)

docmom medyo di lng po clear sa akin..clarify ko lng doc.. since early po ako nag gamit ng exluton (4 wks aftr giving birth), that would mean na d nalang namin hinintay ng OB ko na magbalik ang regular menses ko, instead stop na namin ka agad ang pag ovulate para safe nd sure na d na ako mabubuntis ( considering everyday na take ang pill nd d na late)? nd doc, my husband and i don't need to use condom or withdrawl so long po na take ang pill? tama po ba? thank u talaga doc s reply mo :)

@Matrix: yes ma'am. :) since variable yung time ng resumption ng ovulation after child birth for different women, and studies show the earliest for some being 4 weeks after, i guess ganun na nga plano ng OB mo. and yes, the pills should work...no need for use of other methods as withdrawal or condom. :)

@Matrix: Hi. i actually replied earlier but it didn't seem to have registered...baka sobrang haba kasi ng explanation ko :P so i'll try to simplify this time.
well to answer your question...
#1. advantages of switching from Depo to Exluton and how does depo work ---

for those who don't know what depo is... Depo or DMPA is a birth control shot. It is an injection of synthetic progesterone (progestin) that's given to women every three months to prevent pregnancy.

The shot that's currently available is a form of progestin known as DMPA, which stands for depot medroxyprogesterone acetate. The most common version goes by the name Depo-Provera, and it's injected into the muscle of your buttock or upper arm.

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved another version, called depo-subQ provera 104. It is injected into the tissue just under the skin, contains a lower dose of the same type of progestin, and is just as effective as Depo-Provera.

Advantages: The shot appeals to some women who want a highly effective method of contraception but don't want (or can't use) an IUD, can't take estrogen, or have trouble remembering to take pills. It's a very good temporary method for women who are waiting to get their tubes tied or whose partner has just had a vasectomy.

However, it's not a good method for women who plan to start trying to conceive in the coming year or so.
You should also be aware that the shot and oral contraceptive pills in general provide no protection from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Use of condom is advisable with regards to this matter.

How does the shot prevent pregnancy? Actually, same mechanism of action as Exluton.

The shot contains a long-acting form of progestin that works primarily by suppressing ovulation, so your ovaries don't release an egg. What's more, in the unlikely event that you do ovulate, the progestin causes your cervical mucus to thicken, making it hard for sperm to get through the cervix and reach your fallopian tubes to fertilize the egg. Progestin also causes the lining of your uterus to thin, making it less likely that a fertilized egg will implant there.

Ideally, DMPA is given within the first 5 days of menstruation and should take effect after a week, so it is advised to either wait 7 days after the shot before getting intimate or at least use a condom within the first week after the shot. :)

@Kian: if you've been diligently taking your pill on schedule daily since May and stopped only last July 13, then no worries... however, there are other factors to consider... like before May (prior to taking pills), were you sexually active?, what other contraceptive method did you use then? and while on pills, was your menstrual cycle regular? the thing is, for some women, their cycles become irregular while on the pill, some may even experience spotting only while others don't get their period at all. resumption of menstruation is also varied and may take anytime between a week to 1-3 months after discontinuation before their cycles go back to normal...so i would suggest that you take note of the date of last sexual contact then take a pregnancy test 2 weeks after said date. If it turns out negative then just wait till your period arrives.

@Zel: Hi. Ideally, ang pag-inom ng Exluton should be on the first day of menstruation to be sure that you are not fertile. A woman's fertile period during her menstrual cycle, on average, lasts about seven days: seven days before ovulation (the release of the egg), the day of ovulation, and the day after ovulation. After this, chances of conception decrease quickly, as the egg has a short life-span of about 24 hours. So after ovulation, kung hindi na-fertilize yung egg within 24 hours, expect menstruation to come a week or so after. Going back to your case, hopefully when you started on the 5th day of mens, hindi ka pa nag-oovulate (esp if your menses regularly come in 28-days interval). About missed pills, if less than 3 hours late from schedule, the missed tablet should be taken as soon as remembered then take the next pill at the usual time. If more than 3 hours late, the same advise should be followed but use a barrier contraceptive method for the next 7 days. If more than 27 hours have passed between 2 tablets, contraceptive protection may be impaired so as above, use a condom nalang within the next 7 days to be sure and just continue taking your pill daily as scheduled.

@Zel: yes, tuloy mo lang pills mo. After you finish your blister pack, start with a new one, no intervals. yung spotting mo could be your period na for the month.
@Kian: give your body time to adjust. As i've said earlier, varied kasi yung time ng resumption of menses after discontinuation ng pill. Some women get their period a week after discontinuation while others between 1-3 months pa so magkakaiba talaga. be patient lang. for peace of mind, since it has been 2 weeks na since the date of your last sexual contact, you can take a pregnancy test na. yun nga, if it turns out negative then don't worry, dadatnan at dadatnan ka rin once nagresume na yung normal cycle mo.

@Kian: ma'am, take a home pregnancy test na. it's the only practical and inexpensive way we can tell if you're pregnant or not. trust me, mahirap manghula based on discharges...white mens or discharges don't tell us anything. pwedeng reaction ng body mo sa hormones from the pills that you took during the past few months or pwede ring indication that your normal cycle has resumed and dadatnan ka na. either way, you can wait for a few more days or weeks to know kung dadatnan ka o hindi (mental torture!) or just use a home pregnancy test and get it over with diba?

doc, I have a question i'm taking exluton regularly at about 1 pm (after lunch) last sunday (July 18) i took the pill at around 7 or 8 in the evening after that i took the pill at about the same time the next day and the days thereafter however had contact on monday (july 19), tuesday (july 20) and thursday (july 22), is it possible that I will get pregnant? I started taking the pill on July 8.

@Jean: Hi. you did the right thing when you took your pill as soon as you remembered (7 or 8pm when you missed to take it at 1pm) but the thing is, it's always best to have a plan B ---use an extra contraceptive barrier, like a condom when you get intimate at least for the next couple of days... then take the succeeding pills as scheduled. The reason for taking your pill at exactly the same time each day is to make sure that you maintain a certain level of progestational hormone in circulation...in your case, every time you take a pill at 1pm, the level of hormone peaks to do its job, after 24 hours or so, it winds down so you need to take another one to keep you from being fertile...if you miss to take a pill on time, the moment the hormone levels are down may be interpreted by your body as a go signal to ovulate...hence contraceptive protection may be compromised or impaired (lalo na if more than 27 hours have passed between 2 tablets)... since you've been diligent in taking your pill (except for that one time you took it late), i don't think there's reason to get worried this early. Just continue to take your pills daily and on schedule.

docmom, is it ok f magpapa inject na po ako ng depo the day after my last pill of exluton without necessarily waiting for my mens to arrive? i jst wnt to be sure na i won't get pregnant again.. i dnt want to take d risk of waiting for my regular mens to come back since we do not know for a fact kung kailan nga cya babalik.. weeks or even months is too long to wait, too long for uncertainty nd medyo mental torture din po :) pls advise..

@Kai: if you missed to take your pill AFTER you had sexual contact then it's relatively okay (not that missing a pill is okay in general, it's not) BUT if you missed to take your pill BEFORE you did it then it's a different story. As previously said in the thread of messages, your goal in taking the pill on time is to maintain the amount of hormone in circulation. if you keep missing out, then the waxing and waning of hormones confuses your body. hmn, set your phone alarm kaya so you'll be reminded to take your pill on time daily? take a pregnancy test 2 weeks after last contact if you want to be sure. good luck!

@Matrix: Hi. yes, technically it's alright however, based on literature, DMPA takes TWO weeks to take effect if given after the first five days of the period cycle. Effective immediately if given during the first five days of the period cycle...so best to use a condom if you plan to get intimate within the first 2 weeks after your shot to be sure.
