I have severe neuropathy & take gabapentin (neurontin) 800mg every 8 hours. Plus I take avinza 120mg 3 capsules every 12 hours & oxycontin 80m 2 tablets every 12 hours. I feel sleeply also, but I don't know if it's the neurontin or a combination of everything. If I can, I take a nap every afternoon, but I also don't get up or get going until 10-11 o'clock everyday. Starting on my forth year of not being able to work because of how the meds make me feel & the pain in my feet. Don't know if this helps, but the neurontin never made me feel druck or anything else I can think of.

i have has fybromyalgia since 1995.i have been on all kinds of pain meds.they work for awhile then they loose the ability to help with the pain.i have been on gabapentin 300mg i take 9 a day and i have the whole time.it helps with the pain and i am able to cary on with some of my daily life.i am now going to a pain clinic where the give injections of marcain and serapin.they also do eletroceutial treatments.i can now take my meds at 6 a day and i hope to be at 4 a day in a few weeks.it has been hard going but if i can stop all meds it will be worth it.are there any one going thru the same thing?

Yes, though Neurontin did not help me at all, I would love to be able to lower my med reliance, but right now I have no other options. There aren't anymore pain management places in our area, so seeing our family doc and the pain specialist they have there is my only remaining choice. I hate the drowsiness and the high feeling I get from narcotics and would gladly give them up if I could.

As to the high doses of Neurontin, that is why many doctors like it as a pain treatment, less side effects than regular analegesics and they can take the dosage up very, very high, without risk of overdose as it would take a tremendous amount to cause OD with this drug.

have read replys to my dissusion on neurontin or gabapentin.am still struggling with trying to lower my dosage.the pain doctors i am going to tell me that the dose that i had been taking for 2 years was a dangerous dosage.now they want me to take 1 capsule 3 times a day.i tried that for 3 days now i am having severe migrains and arm and leg pain.i have gone back to 6 a day on my own and i am improving.i know i am going to this pain clinic to get off this stuff but why are doctors so afraid of this medication.can it be all we hear in the media?what do some of you think about this?let me know.thanks alot for you input, faye

Well if you were on a really high dosage and they cut you down to an much lower one abruptly, then they made a big mistake. That can be very dangerous, your body does get dependent on anything you take like that for a long period of time and you will experience withdrawal effects, which explains your migraines and pain. On top of that, and abrupt stop can also cause seizures, if I were you, I would definitely find the drug information and print it out and hand it to your doctor before they make anymore decision on the dosage change. Some doctors don't really read up on a med, so they don't really know all the details.

This is the first time I have ever heard of doctors being afraid of using it. Most are quite enamored with the drug, since the dosage can be taken so high, without od problems to relieve someone's pain, and the fact that it has less side effects than narcotic and opiate alternatives.

Sorry, I wanted to add something else and forgot.

Recently, the original company that marketed Neurontin under the name brand proprietary patent (Pfizer) got in trouble, they were going around to doctors and touting it as being approved and effective to treat many conditions, when in actuality, the FDA had only approved it for treating Epileptic Seizures and nerve pain caused by Shingles.

Now, it is perfectly legal for a doctor to try a drug for off lable uses, and to learn about other uses from their experience prescribing it for patients, this is often how we discover great new uses for a drug, and why you doctor may give you a drug for a certain condition, but if you read the patient monograph about it, you won't see anything on there saying it is approved for that usage.

However, it is illegal for the drug company to tout the drug as being effective for other uses that have not been approved by the FDA. So Pfizer has been sanction and has to pay some serious finds over this issue.

Now, the reason I was bringing this up, is that means that the research has never been done yet to see what all conditions Neurotnin can be effect for, and how high of a dose is safe.

That could very well be the reason that doctors are showing new fear about the drug and worried about people on high doses of it. Since, as I said, most doctors take their knowledge from the reps of the drug company, and don't always have the time to sit down and read the exact details of the drug, they are now of course worried that the drug reps mislead them and some patients could be on a dangerous amount of the drug, or that it will not manage their pain as expected.

I hope that helps to explain why this new attitude might have arise.

Since I do respond to posts here and try to provide correct and accurate information for those seeking it, I try to read up on all new medical information, company sanctions, recalls, and etc. And I just read a recent article about this and the trouble that Pfizer has gotten into over their actions.

Brenda, I was so glad to read your post. I take about 3600 mg a day and I was worried about that. The Neurontin helps me greatly and I would not want to have to lower my dose.

I have been suffering from chronic pain the last 6 yrs. I finally seen a dr back in September that finally sent me to a neurologist. A few months ago he diagnosed me with Trigeminal Neuralgia and put me on Gabapentin. He started me on 100mg 3x a day. Also put me on 10mg of Flexeril at night and 500mg of Naproxen for migraines. The nerve pain and neck/back/headache pain has not improved so he switched me to 300mg Gababpentin 3x a day. That hasn't helped much. I just had an appt this week and now have a new diagnosis of Fibromyalgia and has increased my Gabapentin to 600mg 3x a day, which makes me dizzy as heck. Also makes me tired and have eye heaviness in the morning for a few hours. I am new to this dosage and this disease, is this feeling normal? does it get better? And how long does it take to improve? I am a single mother of three and this is very hard on me. Thanks :)

Hello.. My name is Jenny and I was reading your message about your Trigeminal neuralgia. I am suffering with severe pain right now and with all the research I have done, it's lead me to believe that that is what I may have as well. I go and see a neurologist in a few weeks. I am just wondering if the pain that u have with this condition is like any of the pain I have been experiencing. I would love to be able to pick ur brain about this nerve condition. I do not know anyone with this disorder and would love to get some more info on it. If you are willing.. Please write me back

After reading the different results from numerous people regarding Neurontin, I have to wonder whether the reason has to do with the actual medical condition of each person. The brain and nervous system is so complex the drug probably only helps certain medical problems. I also think many doctors are afraid to give their patients the dosage they need to help the pain. My neurologist started me off on a low dose and added to that dose every week until I reached a dose that worked. I have been taking 4200 mg for two years and thank God everyday for the relief it has given me.

Neurontin made it possible for me to get my life back. I have severe neuropathic pain in my feet due to systemic tibial nerve dysfunction and was in bed for a couple of years before my neurologist put me on 4200 mg of Neurontin a day. I take two 600 mg tablets, every 4 hours, per day. Neurontin will make me sleepy if I don't take it with food and my balance is a little off. Other than that, I cannot even tell I have taken anything. But.......the pain relief is awesome! I hope these people who are abusing the drug don't create such an issue about it, that it is taken away from people who really need it and do not abuse it.

Reply to Josh: I am the same! Been taking Neurontin for 2 months, have terrible hunger. I try to eat sensibly, definitely don't binge, but have put on 7-8 pounds. It hasn't helped at all with the pain.

Yes, it makes me crazy hungry when before I wasn't taking it I just harbor drive to eat because of the pain. I've been on it for 3 months now and have 10lbs to show for it. Don't get me wrong I'm not binge eating I just feel hungrier.
