How Long After Taking A Suboxone Can You Use Opiate

Updated

I took 4mg suboxone at 9am this morning and have never taking them before. Can I take a Percocet tonight and still get pain relief?

People often get confused very easily about this. As an addict who used opiates for about 10 years and now on suboxone for 2 years, and having gone to over 15 rehabs and countless suboxone doctors I have a bit of knowledge on this issue. If you take a suboxone and immediately after try to do opiates, YOU WILL NOT GO INTO WITHDRAWAL. you will just not feel the effects of the opiates because of the blocker. Now if you do it the opposite way, if you do opiates and immediately take your suboxone (you have to wait at the very least 12-24 hours to take it), then you will go into immediate withdrawal and believe me, it is TORTURE! Ask any doctor or anybody who knows about this and they will tell you the same thing. I don't know where this confusion came from but I hear people saying that same question all the time. If you want to do opiates after taking a suboxone, if you want the full affects then wait about a day or so. In the past I've only waited like 8 hours and still felt it, and even less if the dosage was smaller, but everybody is different. So in short, to answer the question, you can take opaites after taking a suboxone without going into withdrawal, but keep in mind the longer you wait, the better they will work. Hope this helps.

If I cut maybe a 1/3 off of a suboxone 8mg film is it okay if I'm going into w/d again at 7yrs after the1/3 of sub? I'm wanting to do a methadone detox and know how it's done!

@sweetchicsue,

Post #1 offers sound advice to consider regarding whether taking suboxone is ok or not in conjunction with an opioid such as methadone. However to determine an appropriate dosage for tapering I think it would probably be a good idea to discuss this with your prescribing doctor, since everyone is different and what works for one person may be too much or too little for someone else. I'd also encourage you to listen to your body based on how you've felt at various dosages and then implement your doctor's advice and strategy for what it's worth. Better safe than sorry! I wish you a smooth transition through the detox!

I need advice. I've been an addict to opiates for about 5 years.. To go without withdrawals I cut a Suboxone strip in 4 pieces and took a quarter each day. I'm on the fifth day with no medicine and it's been over 24 hours since my last day. My girlfriend is worried I'll use again, but I let her know I won't feel anything from opiates. Isn't that true?

I took a 4mg subutex last night about 6pm and other 4mg this morning at about 8am. How long should I wait to feel the effect of my pain meds again? I'm not on subutex daily. This is all I've taken.

In my experience, depending on the amount of suboxone strip will depend on the time it will take to feel the effects of an opiate. And of course metabolism and each individual reacting different to substances plays a part.

I personally can take a small piece, anywhere from 1/10th-1/8th of 8mg in the morning and feel the effects of a 4 mg dilaudid in 6-8 hours. However 6 hours is if I were to take A TINY piece of strip. So patience is a virtue in this area.

I don't understand how you can say. If you take a sub to soon after an opiate it will be torture. I have been addicted since I fell off my roof and broke my neck 13 years ago. I have never ever had that problem. I have been doing this. Well for 13 years.

I completely agree with you...I just experienced this yesterday all through the night and I'm just now starting to feel better at 5:30 pm ..Unbelievable Torcher ,24 hours straight, throwing up every time I moved .I use to take Suboxone for my back pain. I had Back surgery a couple months back and I called in my prescription on Wednesday to be refilled, well come Friday I haven't heard from them so I called. Come to find out he is out of the country and I won't be able to pick it up until Monday. I kindly explained to her that I was already out because I should have picked them up already and of course there wasn't anything she could do, which I understood and we all know there is no point at all in trying to explain anything to them. It only makes you look like a pill pusher .So what do you do, you hurt until Monday. But boy did I hurt. I knew there was a way to take pain meds and Suboxone together I just got it confused and I hadn't taken anything since Friday so I thought I was good to go ...I guess it's different stokes for different fokes. But I will definitely remember not to take it after pain medication again

So I get 120 90 mg immediate release a month. And when I run out I do have some Subs on hand. Some months I just take too much. Anyway after my last dose of oxycodone I usually take a piece of suboxone 4-5 hours after and I feel great. People say it shouldn't be but it is. Our makeup is all different.

Yes as long as your feeling withdrawals from the subs dont listen to all those saying 3-5 days. I as well as friends have had many many years of experience. You only have to wait about an hour a mg on the subs. To be more clear if you take 4 mg. of sub you can feel your opiates in approximately 4 hours, but a better rule of thumb is if you begin feeling withdrawal from sub you will feel your opiates period. Too many people think they know what they are talking about but apparently have an extreme lack of experience!

Yea I have been on subutex for a month twice a day for opana and oxy addiction but I hurt my back muscle and tonight I took opana 20mg for the first time in 6 weeks. The last time I took a subutex was 8am this morning and I took the opana 20mg at 9:30 pm. it took my pain away and I feel fine right now so I guess we will see when I wake up around noon if I take my subutex if I get withdrawals from anything. I hope not as the last withdrawals from 30mg oxycodone and opana 20, 30 and 40mg was terrible before I took subutex because I took the opana and oxycodone the wrong way for years and didn't have a problem with them until I went skiing lol, but the withdrawals sucked.

I take buprenorphin and naloxacone(8mg strips) twice a day. In three weeks I may be having a mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. As terrified as I am about the mastectomy I am more terrified that I will be in extreme pain. I am cutting back to one strip a day for the next week and less each day until then and hopefully nothing by 3 days prior to surgery. Do you think this plan will work? I am sure they will give me morphine ...just want to make sure I get enough morphine so I am not suffering. I have heard that if I tell the doctors associated with the surgery that I take Suboxone that they may give me less morphine because of my addiction so I am not telling them.

My friend took 7mg of suboxone at about 7am yesterday n broke their toe when she slammed her foot into my vanity - and she's in a surgical shoe and crutches. They gave her 5/325 oxycodone-apap... How long will she have to wait to be able and feel the oxycodone and how much oxycodone should she take at 6am the next day (which is today)?

Re: Abbey (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

Give it some time! It takes a little while for it to take opiates out and put the Suboxone in. But do not stay on more than six weeks only if you’re coming off of heavy stuff! Don’t stay on it for years.
It’s nothing but a Band-Aid you will get your full addiction right back.

I hope you did.

Re: Tony (# 8) Expand Referenced Message

If you have opiates in your system and you text the boxing this Suboxone expels the opiates from your receptors and you go into withdrawal

Re: Jean (# 14) Expand Referenced Message

I worked in surgery for many years and I got news for you, you can lie by omission but the anesthesiologist will know if you are addicted to painkillers or if you are on Subs because they have to sometimes nearly quadruple the amount anesthesia meds to put you under and keep you there. It is never a good idea to omit information when you are having surgery. Also my experience with my most recent surgery, I have had many do to nearly cutting my hand off, the doctor gave me 3O K4 Dilaudids for a laparoscopic gallbladder removal which merits non addicts maybe 14 7.5 Percs. If you have a surgeon who doesn’t understand the nature and mechanics of the medicines you are on then find one who does. It amazes me people will go to 20 different car lots to find the right car but when it comes to their life they just assume their physician knows all. This is not the case you are one patient among hundreds and they only know what you tell them. But I promise, if you lie they will know and you may end up with Toradol. It is extremely dangerous to lie to your anesthesiologists and surgeon because the truth will out when you start counting down. Also, please don’t sneak and eat when you are NPO because your anesthesiologists or nurse anesthetist will be sucking that PB&J sandwich you had at midnight out praying that you didn’t aspirate which can lead to death.
