Is It Ok To Take Vicodin With Suboxone? (Page 3)

Updated

Hi. I am having a procedure done and am being prescribed vicodin. I am currently on suboxone. I WILL NOT take the vicodin unless I am in excruciating pain. Would suboxone help with the pain? And if I do have to take the vicodin how long should I wait to take it after taking suboxone? THANKS!

Hi. I have experience as a healthcare giver and as a patient in this matter. I hope this answers your question. Sub's do have analgesic (pain relieving) properties and it works. The reason why some people say that it doesn't, is because they are compairing it to strong opiets. It is not like H or oxy's. But it is strong as, if not stronger than, vicodin. A normal dose of vicodin or norco. Ofcourse if you take 10 Norcos, you will feel less pain than Subutex. If you want to take opiet while on Sub, than you just have to take about double the dosage, if not more, to feel the effect. But you will. Longer you wait, less opiet you have to take to feel the effect. I hope the best...

Hi terrified blonde,
Usually a sub dr. will have you taper to .5mg or even .25mg then have you stop taking it. They may even prescribe something to help you sleep and something to calm you down but only for a few days. I,m talking maybe 3 sleeping pills and 3 of some other stuff for calming effect.
However, what your dr. is prescribing is not unheard of.
It will keep away the sub wds.
This is obviously a risky way for people with addiction issues to get off subs.
Your gonna have to follow the drs. orders to the letter even if you start to feel a little crappy when your tapering the tabs and the morphine.
I,d be surprised if you felt anything off the tab/morph. after being on such a high dose of subs for so long. What I mean by that is you probably won,t feel the buzz you used to feel when on pain pills but they will help to keep the sub wd away.
Good Luck.

Today is 3/4/14 and i took my last Subzolf (or however u spell it) yesterday. (3/3/14) I am going to try and taper off of this bull shizz. I have a few Roxys for the beginning and loratabs for the ending. I am just wondering how long i should wait until i pop my first Roxy...when will i feel it? Any other advise or info. Would be greatly appreciated. If you could e mail me at {edited for privacy} i would love you for that!!!

Jay, I'm sorry I don't have any advice for you. I'd def wait until you start feeling wd's from the sub to start the roxys. I'm confused as to why anyone is coming off subs with roxys or morphine. They are the whole reason I take subs

I started suboxone today I took a 4mg stip still felt like crap took another 4mg still felt like crap had a score of 26 on COWS took another 4mg now I am at home and sweating jittery and can't sleep would too much make you feel like this because the symptoms feel just like withdrawal so I am confused?!

Number your withdrawal between 1 thru 5, 5 being the worst youever felt. You can take a low dose or split the pill first. If you feel okay and not feel worse, then take more until you feel better. Tell me if I'm wrong but you're not trying to feel high, right? I've heard that if you've been off of opiet for awhile, your tolerance level also goes back down as well. So don't think you have to take as much as what you were used to prior to quitting before. You might get hurt. Although this is what it written in medical journals, I've seen patients that still have high tolerance after being off of opiet for over almost 2 years. I've also read that Sub's makes keep the tolerance level high.

It could be that you didn't wait lonv enough before taking the Suboxone. Also if you were on really high dose of whatever opiet you were taking, it takes getting used to. I too went through couple of days before Subutex started working. I was vomiting for 2 straight days, fever and shakes... if you can get some type of Benzodiazepines, such as Valium or Xanax, it wil help you. But don't take too much or too long. That too is habit forming. However, it will help you get over the hump. Let me know how you are doing.

Hi two4tyler, I just read your post and I hope you're feeling much better today. What were you taking and how much before you started on Suboxone? If you're a 26 on COWS, the Sub should definitely be working by now, unless you're not taking a high enough dose of Suboxone to match and BEAT what you used to be on. Have you spoken to your Dr about this? You shouldn't suffer this long while making the switch to Subs and your Dr mos likely will increase your dose and then you'll feel NORMAL. Not HIGH, but you'll feel HAPPILY NORMAL when you're on the right dose. Whatever you do, DON'T TAKE ANY OPIATES NOW THAT YOU HAVE SUBOXONE IN YOUR SYSTEM, it will cause Precipitated Withdrawals, (aka, "hell on earth")! You've come too far to go back to your old ways. Please call your Dr right now and be honest about how you're suffering wd's...your dr can fix your symptoms by adjusting your Suboxone and you'll feel like a new person. The whole point in being put on Subs is to NOT SUFFER WITHDRAWALS, so let's get you on the right dosing right now. I was put on 24mg for the first week and I didn't have any withdrawals, your dose is too low. Hang in there and please reply to my post as soon as you read this. We're all here for you. I'll be waiting for your reply...talk with you soon

That's not true. Methadone withdrawals last up to 30 days and PAWS can last upto 6 months.

Lets start with this I've been on suboxone for four years. I just had surgery 3 months ago and was on my subs. and 3 different pain killers, they all work fine. When taking the film strips you can mix with no problem. If you here different they never did subs.

My husband just accidently took a norco witha vicodin. We know that hhe's not suppose to do that. Hes on 2norco every 4hrs and one bottle had one left. I just came in from the pharmacy with the new script and he thought I put it with the other. Does he need to wait now before taking the norco again?

Ok, i've read a lot here and find some good and bad info. I've been on suboxone and subutex for over 5 years. Not at the same time of course. 20 mg a day. I finally gave up and threw in the towel. I couldn't afford it any longer and didn't want to keep fighting with my wife. I stopped taking the meds 7 days ago weeping myself from 20 to 4mg in 3 days and then to a shaving. I have felt very little withdraw and able to sleep with the help of xanax. Suboxone is a short term med that should be used no more then 5 days starting 24 hours after your last pain med. Subs help with pain dramatically. But don't get caught in the long term trap. I'm not sure taking an opiate while subs works I never tried. But I will say I wouldnt.

Hi Jennifer, I'm surprised to hear that your Dr wants you to take Subs AND pain pills at the same time...are you sure you understood your Dr correctly? I was on 8-12 mg of Subutex daily for 3 years and I'm getting ready to have back surgery and my Dr had me stop my Subutex cold turkey, wait 24-48 hours until I started to feel mild withdrawals and then start taking my first dose of Norco (10/325) and Morphine ER (30mg). My Dr is wonderful and he has gotten many patients off of Subs using this technique. I was terrified to try it because I was so scared of withdrawals from the Subs, but IT WORKED! I also take Xanax so he keeps me on it. The whole reason to get off the Subs now is because after being on Subs for any length of time, it takes a while for the Opiates (Norco,Vicoden, etc) to work...Trust me, I was the biggest CHICKEN about getting off the Subutex for fear of Wd's, but as soon as you take your first pain pill, you won't suffer any withdrawals. You won't feel "high", you'll feel normal:-) The reason I'm confused about your Dr keeping you on Subs AND Pain pills is because once you take your first Vicoden (or any opiate), you CAN'T take Subs again until you are in MODERATE WITHDRAWLS FROM THE VICODEN, YOU WILL DEFINITELY HAVE PRECIPITATED WITHDRAWALS...Please research this. You can' mix these medications. Yes, you can easily switch FROM Subs TO Pain pills, but please listen...you CAN'T MIX OR switch between the two meds. You have to be OFF of ALL NARCOTIC PAIN MEDICATION for at least 24 hours (or until you start feeling withdrawls from your pain pills) BEFORE you can take even the smallest dose of Subs again. You will be sicker than you've ever been. Sorry this post is so long, I just really don't want you to get "hell on earth sick". If you take your pain meds and then take a Sub that same day, you will go into severe withdrawls immediately...the Suboxone/Subutex is crazy, scarey strong...it will knock the Opiates (Vicoden, etc) off your brain receptors and you will be extremely sick. However, as long as you take ONLY your new pain medication before and after your surgery, you will be fine. I've just been through this and it works great. Be honest with yourself after your surgery...when you're healed and you don't need your pain pills anymore, get rid of them. After my surgery, I tr tapered off my Norco and Morphine ER, and GREAT NEWS...I have no cravings and I decided to NOT GO BACK ON SUBS! I feel so clean, full of energy, I sleep great and the great thing is, if you stay on your pain meds for a few weeks, you WON'T EVER SUFFER ANY WITHDRAWLS FROM THE SUBS! As long as you have the willpower and FAITH in GOD and in Yourself, you can and WILL get off the Suboxone by safely using your pain meds for a week or two. Anyone who says different hasn't been through this. I just accomplished this, I Stopped my Subutex on 3/2/14, Started Norco and Morphine er on 3/4/14, and I Stopped ALL NARCOTIC PAIN MEDS a few days ago. If you need to go back on the Subs AFTER you heal and get off the pain meds, please take the lowest dose of Subs possible. If you don't want to be TRAPPED IN SUBOXONE HELL FOREVER, them take your pain meds as prescribed and taper off of them when you're healed from your surgery. I'm speaking from first hand experience, this plan WORKS and you'll be so happy to not be a prisoner to this sick suboxone/subutex world. I'm now taking non narcotic pain meds and I just had an Epidural this week. Don't let your mind trick you into thinking that you need to go back on Subs. This surgery is your way out, and if anyone tells you differently, they haven't experienced it first hand! Also, remember...PLEASE DON'T MIX SUBS AND NARCOTIC PAIN MEDS. When is your surgery? Please reply to this post, I'll be waiting to hear from you. Hang in there!

thank you so much
yes you heard me right they want me to take 4 mg of sub and pain meds they told me that 4 mg of suboxone doesn't block pain receptors which I have never heard of what is the best way to tapper before surgery I have this in a week from today and don't know how or what to do. They said if I stopped my sub I would have to do be in withdrawal before starting my sub again I called the suboxone hotline and they said 4 mg do block pain receptors and I should call my clinic again im so confused . I think ill stop sub take pain med and go back on sub only if I really need to hopefully I can be off everything after the surgery

Jennifer, find a new dr. He has so miss informed you. Your gonna end up hurt and sick. The littlest bit of subs can work. You CANT mix the 2. I would ask for a second opinion. And no pharmacy will fill both meds together I promise.

Thanks I think that I'd a very good idea I'm feeling a little mislead. I thought that they just want me to stay on sub because there afraid of losing a patient but at my expense of hurting or being very ill I will definitely call and get a second opinion from a different clinic and also switching clinics I'll let you guys know how this all pans out thanks everyone
