Help Me Withdraw From Imipramine

Updated

I've been on 25 mg of imipramine for 30 years. I've been withdrawing for almost 2 months by 10% per weeek. I had taken the 2% dose for 2 nights. On 3rd night woke up burning all over especially in back of head and gripped by extreme anxiety. Decided to go back up to 5% for a little bit. Still had symptoms; went to full strength again; still same symptoms about 3 to 5 hours after taking drug. These symptoms don't seem like withdrawal symptoms--brain zaps, emotionally unstable--that I'd been experiencing on withdrawal. I would appreciate any information or help.

Hi Barb,

If you take a look at Imipramine's list of potential side effects (posted below), I think it'll explain much of the symptoms you're describing:

As far as withdrawing goes, I would highly recommend that you seek this sort of medical advice from your doctor who knows your medical history and can help chart out a specific way for you to get off this drug.

I get the sense that you've been doing everything right, but being on any medication for 30 years is a very long time, so your body may require a different approach for the long run.

I hope this helps!

Hi
I have been reducing my imipramine dose of 150mg very steadily for 2 years now and am down to 85mg. The hardest part of withdrawing is during the first week after each reduction, once you've got through that then the worst is over I have found. My doctor prescribes 12 x 2 mg diazepam to help me through this period and I decide when to take them. I usually take one in the morning which brings my brain 'back into focus' then see how the day goes from there. There is a risk of diazepam addiction so most doctors aren't willing to prescribe more. I couldn't have done the reductions without this tool, there really is no need to suffer the immediate withdrawal symptoms after a reduction. Hope this helps!
