Generic Ingredients

Updated

Does anyone know where to find the ingredients in this new generic bupropion xl 300mg. It's yellow and I had a problem with the sr when it went generic. That one was a bright yellow pill that smelled nasty. I had a reaction to it and broke out in hives. Now I get these 300mg pills and they stink too. I called the by mail pharmacy when they sent me a letter stating that welbutrin xl was going generic and spent 20 minutes on the phone with a pharmacist trying to find some info on this new generic and she couldn't help me.

Well, without having the markings from the tablet, so we could find out which company made it, it will be very hard to find that information. The inactive ingredients do not have to be the same between the name and generics, nor do they have to be the same from generic to generic.

If you can post the imprint from the tablets, including any letters, numbers, and logos, I will look it up and we can find out who makes it, then go from there to find more information.

My Rx for Wellbutrin XL was also changed without my prior notice or consent to Buderprion XL 300. I was just told it's the generic, like they were doing me a favor. Tablets are yellow w/ # 628.
Since then [aprox. 2 mos.] I have experienced recurrance of symptoms too.
Then I heard the generic is like taking half dose of Wellbutrin. I don't know what to think or who to believe. I guess I'll confront my pharmacist and end up paying a higher price. Must be nice being able to make the rules.

Well that really depends on your insurance company, many of them require the pharmacy to give you a generic first if it is now available.

As to the potency difference, well the difference isn't quite that large, but it is enough to be significant. The active ingredient in generic prescriptions is allowed, by law, to differ by as much as plus or minus 20% from the name brand. So if you were taking a 100mg tablet, you might now be getting only an 80mg tablet. This can cause some problems.

I can provide you with links to the laws for this if you want to see the proof and know who to believe. So sometimes the generics aren't the same as the name brand and they just won't work for you as well.

Not to mention the fact that the inactive ingredients can also affect the way the medication works for some people and those do not have to be the same at all, the generic company can use ones that are entirely different from what the name brand company used.

I have noticed side effects with the budeprion generic that I didn't have before. My hair is breaking off at the root. I have been tested for thyroid problems to be sure that's not the culprit, but I am thinking this new generic (budeprion) does not work as well and has this weird side effect. Anyone heard of that? Got a prescription for the SR but it's the same budeprion crap. Any advice?

Well you can try asking your doctor to put brand medically necessary on your prescription, or you can call around to different pharmacies to see which companies generics they carry as the inactive ingredients and quality can all differ from company to company.

I was prescribed Wellbutrin SR and was given the generic buproprion. I took 150 mg per day and was doing fine. In Dec., a new insurance company had the pharmacy give me budeprion. My symptoms returned; I upped my dosage to 300 mg per day, and just kept getting worse. I have since read articles and forums saying the budeprion created the same situation for many people. There's something wrong with that generic, in my opinion. It is made by TEVA and I question their active ingredients. I am now back on buproprion and feeling much better.

Budeprion (150 MG) answered my prayers as far as ceasing depression until some peculiar symptoms showed up. The first weeks of taking the drug enabled me to be more confident, sociable, and my level of concentration improved. It wasn't until the third week that I started getting hives, one spot on my buttocks soon spread like wildfire accross my body within minutes. It lasted for days even when I stopped the medication. Now I'm faced with a kidney issue as well, it could be related. I'm awaiting an MRI and a slew of other tests.

Budeprion is garbage grade Wellbutrin. It's not working and its making me constipated. Bupropion works better. I will go back to Bupropion, where ever I can find it.
