Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you, because much of it depends on the storage conditions. Degradation is worsened the more they are exposed to heat, air and moisture.

For instance, many people store medications in their bathroom medicine chest, which is the worst place to keep them. Storing them there exposes them to a lot of heat and moisture. The longest life-span is obtained by storing them in a dry, dark, cool location. Generally, if they are past the expiration date, they should be disposed of and replaced.

Verwon, Thanks for taking the time to try and help me decide what to do with these. Unfortunately, I don't know what the storage conditions were either. I did read in a medical journal that anxiety medicine and pain meds don't go bad per se. They are however susceptible to a loss in potency. The Army did a test w/ valium and stored it for 7 years beyond expy date and they were still100% potent. But they were stored under optimum conditions. No such study has been done on Xanax as far as I'm aware.The only non-verifiable info I've gleaned is that meds such as Valium and Xanax etc. - if stored as one would expect in script bottle in bathroom med. chest don't usually begin to lose potency for 2 to 3 years after expy date. This Xanax I have is a year and a 1/2 past expy. So, I've taken it for a week. It hasn't made me sick. I'm not sure if its lost any of its potency yet because I'm taking it in comb. with new Xanax. I'm supposed to take 2mgs a day but I've been mixing 1 mg new, w/ 1mg of the old, to stretch it out. Next week, I'll have nothing but the old left and I guess I'll find out pretty quick if a substantial amt of potency has been lost. I'll certainly post the results.
